I just picked up on this game, but the game engine is seemingly really easy to figure out (for the most part) so I know just enough to mention this topic to you guys. My French Coach is a part of the My Coach series of video games. (no I'm not italicizing titles because I'm tired and want to go to bed soon, sorry) As the name suggests, the game puts you through several lessons that teach you skills in speaking and reading in French (for English speakers). So you guys might be asking: A language learning game? Full of just text? To TAS? Are you kidding me right now? Well actually, it's a really good game for me to TAS once I completely learn the game engine and such. And the lessons have to stop at some point. So anyway, there are 2 reasons I see this as a good TASing opportunity. The first is that there is a way you can literally skip 10 of the lessons in the game (NOT a glitch, but still cool). The second is that all the lessons I've seen thus far, in theory, can be done within less than a minute, because all the game is is clicking on text with the stylus. All the minigames require the stylus. In fact the whole game requires the stylus pretty much; there are very few portions I've seen that even allow button presses. The game starts you off with obviously the file menu, entering your name (which can only be done in 1 letter, which I will do), and selecting your country (you have to select US in a TAS because it's the one that appears first). After that it takes you to a placement test, which consists of 50 questions and can only be done in the 3 in-game-timed minutes that the game gives you. I found that if you answer all the 50 questions correctly in the given time, you can skip 10 whole lessons, which would I think be about 1/10 of the game. That is a freaking lot of time saved. And the placement test is not skippable. I believe there are probably somewhere around 100 lessons in the game, or less, because I estimated based on the amount of unlockables in the game. Let's just say that each lesson takes us somewhere between 15-30 seconds to complete. So average it out, as 20 seconds. That's 1/3 of a minute. So if we have to do 90 lessons (starting on Lesson 11) and there are 100 lessons, that's about 30 minutes. I know that sounds like a really long time, but that's actually really really really short in relativity to the size of the game. I mean, by the developers' perspective, that game is supposed to be completed in short increments, and could take weeks, months, even years for a casual player who's doing what he/she is supposed to do to complete, because yaknow, learning a language takes time. Plus the really fast text skipping and really fast minigame completions would definitely be a sight to see. In the TAS publication, one could put, "_____ learns the entire French language in about 30 minutes." lol. Anyway, tell me what you guys think. And please do. Thanks. Maybe I could even get a helper this way.

Without knowing what the game actually looks like, that sounds like it's going to be really dull to watch. Then again, 30 minutes of selecting text is a lot less than 2 hours of selecting text, so it could still get into the Vault.

Really dull from whose perspectives? From the perspective of someone who's never played the game before, or even seen it or heard of it, yes, it could be considered very dull. But for someone who just the day before watching the TAS was playing the game trying to learn French and found that video by coincidence on YouTube, without knowing what a TAS actually was, it would more than likely shock them. This is where judging here may actually be flawed. But there's no way we can fix that, as some games just aren't played by that many people.

The Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego run is only accepted to the Vault because of its nontrivial routing nature. Text-selecting runs that do nothing but make linear choices are not accepted for the Vault.
http://www.youtube.com/Noxxa <dwangoAC> This is a TAS (...). Not suitable for all audiences. May cause undesirable side-effects. May contain emulator abuse. Emulator may be abusive. This product contains glitches known to the state of California to cause egg defects. <Masterjun> I'm just a guy arranging bits in a sequence which could potentially amuse other people looking at these bits <adelikat> In Oregon Trail, I sacrificed my own family to save time. In Star trek, I killed helpless comrades in escape pods to save time. Here, I kill my allies to save time. I think I need help.

look, you asked for an opinion and you got it,the odds are against you with this specific game choice, since there isn't that much room to show "ultimate godly perfect" gameplay. But you can try to prove the community wrong by tasing and showing it to the public,so it's up to you. I'm TASing a relatively unknown and bad fighting game too with speed as an objective,so i get you when you say the judging may be unfair but i believe in the final product and will try again(i've already had my first justice league tas rejected,i'm polishing it a lot more to have a chance on the vault's rules)
TAS i'm interested: megaman series: mmbn1 all chips, mmx3 any% psx glitched fighting games with speed goals in general

So would an Ace Attorney TAS be rejected? I know Plush was working on one. lol

I found a way that you can theoretically complete the game without really doing any of the lessons and just doing one single minigame about 200 times after the placement test (each time would take an inhumanely short amount of time, done within seconds). Does that count as "nontrivial routing"?

I think it would count, and would be a pretty interesting way to beat the game, but it would be pretty boring to watch.

Can you please try and make a rough run of this route vs the intended route and record it? It's rather hard to judge when this is not exactly a mainstream game people are likely more familiar with.

Sure: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSCngiaol2DLcDyuymAfaUQ Just check out my YouTube channel. I'm currently planning to route LEGO Friends the next time I game, which may be tonight. That'll take a long time. But yeah, just check out that channel to see videos soon to come of My French Coach, and while you're there you might as well see some of the LEGO Friends videos, Foster's Imagination Invaders, Fairy Tail: Gekitou! Madoushi Kessen!, etc.
