A small improvement to the published run with a slight changes in 2-1 and 3-1, and a known improvement in 4-1.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 1.11.6
  • Uses password to access bonus stages
  • beats bonus stages as fast as possible

Comments

I was looking into doing an updated Ristar TAS but I thought first I might look at the Bonus Stages run to get an idea what I was getting into and if it would hold my interest. I didn't realize how optimized the run was at the time. I started looking around for obvious improvements and found none, after checking for even tiny improvements I found only 2. (Note that the movie length is longer due to longer loading times.)

2-1

I press right right before hitting the box to get better positioning to grab the treasure, saving 2 frames.

3-1

I use a damage boost to save 6 frames. However, these are real time frames, and ingame time is lost, because the clock ticks much faster while you are invincible after getting hit. I'm not sure how people will feel about this, but it's up for discussion anyway.

4-1

A clever improvement found by gamble5688 where you can clip in betweeen the chests.
I also took out an annoying horn sound that played about half way through the movie by inputting buttons on controller 2, not sure why that was there.

Other comments

I wasn't sure what to do about authorship here. Obviously most of the inputs are by mmarks. But the strategies are obvious, and he is perma-banned, so I wasn't concerned about not adding him. If people have a different opinion on this let me know, I don't mind adding him if people feel really strongly he should be.
Also for easy comparison I made this faithful re-sync of the original run in BizHawk: userfiles/info/32836253898815028

Samsara: File replaced with a 9 frame improvement. I guess I'll take this one real quick.
Samsara: Accepting as an improvement to the published run. Note that the run only appears slower because of more accurate emulation.
feos: I should be publishing the one that obsoletes 1666M.

I believe the official consensus regarding permabanned authors (which we've had to discuss in detail recently) is that they can be credited for their inputs in someone else's submission. The main thing we're preventing is a banned user actually submitting, not preventing credit for actual work they've done on a legitimate submission.

http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/32876637723586432 please replace the movie file with this one, which includes an improvement by gamble5688 that I didn't notice. Consequently I will also add them as co-author.
