First off wanted to say hello! I've been hanging out in the irc for the last few days figured I'd create an account so I could start learning this awesomeness. So after talking to some of the people in IRC about starting easy I got my hands on fceux and Yoshi's Cookie... a game that I played a lot of when growing up. I did some quick searches on here and couldn't find anything on the webpage or via google... has anyone worked with Yoshi's Cookie NES or SNES before and might be able to offer some advice? I did find someone playing this on YouTube but it was a few years old... I put the video into .25 speed and followed with in my own copy... Is that wrong to do? As I completed 10-10 faster than the person in the video.

I think that is a nice start. How did you do exactly to be quicker than the video?(Not ingame strategy, but more like did you use frame advance, etc.)

Starting at 0.25 speed is great, but if you're going to try to effectively TAS, you're going to want to learn about frame advance, which essentially pauses the game until you are ready for the game to move forward 1/60 of a second. If there are no existing game resources, you're going to want to start thinking about exactly what is required to beat each level, and how to accomplish that in the fewest number of frames. If you've been looking at the various techniques and resources pages, you will probably have already seen that you generally only need to press a button for one frame (and then release it in the next frame) to ensure that your cursor moves or that the button press has been received. You will also want to take heavy advantage of save states, and you might consider using TAS Editor as the next level of progress. Best of luck with Yoshi's Cookie and with your future TASing efforts, and welcome to the site!

That is a fine way to do then. You are on the right track with the frame advance. But probably the next thing you would want to try is new combinations? Oh and if there is a topic of your game, you could post progress or in game help there. If there is not one made yet, you can go ahead and create a new one.

As you know by now, FatRatKnight has done some work on Yoshi's Cookie. For future reference, if you're looking for all information on a game, start by checking the forums (as you now know) and go to the front page of the website and do a search for the game. After executing the search, check the "Include submissions" checkbox, then do it again. When you do so, this submission by FatRatKnight pops up near the top. By including submissions, you can find movies that weren't published for whatever reason.

Also, a good thing to check is what each combination of buttons do (ie left and right at the same time). That yields interesting effects in some games.
I didn't kill donkey, I saved it. Current projects: Misc Donkey hacks :) Past projects: Pacifist DKC1 DKC1 Entrance randomizer DKC2 Entrance randomizer DKDC (a troll hack of DKC1) DKC1 Enemy randomizer (among other things)

Notify on reply only sends you an e-mail once per site visit. For example, you should receive an e-mail about this response. But any future responses between now and the time you check back in with the thread will not result in you getting e-mailed. Cuts down on e-spam. :) (Of course, if you are not watching this topic, you won't get e-mailed either.)

You need to turn on notifications for the topics you want to follow. Also, gmail has in the past been known to eat some notifications from tasvideos, thinking they are spam.
