I've explored the first two stages of S&K a lot when I was younger and did find many many more Giant Rings than one would expect. They're all over the place. here are some maps http://www.soniccenter.org/maps/sonic_&_knuckles but they do not show where all the rings are specifically. I think I found them all but I might have circled a wrong area or missed one so don't take this as set in stone:

Wow!! That really helps! Do you have a map of both acts of MHZ? I only know of 3 Giant Rings in that zone.
I don't have a map, but I could probably mark their locations down on the TSC maps pretty quickly. Edit: Mushroom Hill 1 Mushroom Hill 2 The rings that are crossed out can only be accessed with knuckles.

Yeah, I think you have to collect all the emeralds to gain access to Doomsday Zone. Plus having the ability to transform into Hyper Sonic instead of Super Sonic is nice.
Whats Hyper sonic? Is he like twice the speed and double the jumping distance of super sonic (my that does sound scary).
You know, it looks really weird when you respond to a later post by editing an earlier post.

uh, did you miss one that I had circled in my picture? for act 1? or is there just an extra life tv in there?

It's either an Extra Life, or it's empty. There's definitely not a giant ring there. I've checked many times (thinking I'd found a new giant ring, only then to remember that this was the one place that looked like it had one, but didn't.

Now I think of it, just get hyper Sonic and that way you can know for sure if you want to do another in which he is obtained.

http://invhost.com/share/s3k_bobxp_9.gmv Update. This stops after the MHZ mid-boss. I couldn't be arsed to get a decent time on LBZ2, and this is only a test run so meh. Anyway, I completed the second LBZ boss (the one on the death egg platform) in the same time as SprintGod did, with a different method (jump and instashield for the first 4 hits, then roll for the 5th hit, then jump and instashield for the rest), so that's good. I've used all four Giant Rings in MHZ1. I'm going to skip the third Giant Ring in MHZ2, because it requires using a pulley machine to get to which would just waste time. That way, I'll still be able to get Hyper Sonic by the end of MHZ.

Is this possible? (I don't remember if you can go through the floor there)

Your standard of play is certainly improved since the beggining, these speacals were a bit beyond me at the time and you can see why. I can't wait to see hyper sonic.

Actually it doesn't (I made that vid last night to demo the route for all the giant rings, and was going to edit it into the post with the maps, but this seems better)

I would imagine that's not possible. You wouldn't be able to go far enough to the left, since you'd hit the top of the loop too soon.

Indeed. I quite often look back at my movie and think "what a load of crap". Especially CNZ1. *shudder*

Just an idea for special stages, i did it when i was trying my test run however many years ago, in the special stages, you can jump over bouncers and red spheres and land inbetween them. I found this saved time, although i don't think you can jump forever.

This was discussed at the same time as optimal routes for the special stages were. Read back some pages. :)

After you're done with this, maybe you can attempt an all-Emerald run as Tails or Knuckles instead! Perhaps their abilities will make their runs very different from Sonic's, especially Knuckles': he does take a different path from Sonic in some levels.

No, my other project was the as many rings as possible run. I almost always only play as Sonic because only he can use the shield actions. (Now I sound like an anime voiceover person. XD)

Exactly! That would make Tails' and Knuckles' runs even more different from Sonic's! Besides, look at all the Castlevania runs where they play as different characters. Of course, somebody else can try this. Any volunteers?

That's not the point. Shield actions and Hyper Sonic's burst in whatever the hell direction you want are practically priceless in a speedrun, assisted or not. Tails and Knuckles runs would, therefore, be a lot more boring.

I couldn't help notice the cliché of that phrase. ;)

At least, if you play them normally. Theres a lot of fun physics breaking to be done with the S3K. And then Super Tails has some awesome benefits once you get him.

Isn't super tails just normal tails with fast shoes and invincibility, but HYPER tails the upgrade that gives you the kill birds? And I wonder if sonic+tails would ever let you benefit from tails carrying sonic. probably not. and both knuckles upgrades are pretty useless apart from speed but knuckles does have his own routes which are sometimes faster or have no bosses.

I might be remembering wrong, but I think Tails receives nothing from the first set of diamonds, and Super Tails (shoes + invulnerability + birds) after the second set. Only Sonic and Knuckles have hyper forms.

Super tails can only be got with all 7 super emeralds. There is no hyper tails.

No. Tails flies very slowly. However, there are certain places where having tails can make things go a bit faster. Like those pull-up machines in Mushroom Hill zone.

Incase anyone is interested this is how hyper Sonic looks and plays. I think he's just the same but with shield shield actions, although I don't know how they can be indivually activated. Hows the progress bobxp?

If you had read what I said before when I answered your question about hyper sonic, you would know that hyper sonic effectively has access to all shield actions at once, by pressing (direction) + jump in midair. And he can breathe underwater without needing the bubble shield. Although this is useless in a speed run, because there is no water after Launch Base zone.
