Link to video I have a dream. My dream is to see a TAS of Monter Hunter Tri featuring a full hunt of Jhen Mohran. "But of course this is impossible, since it can only be accessed online" would you say, right? Well, are you really really sure about the 'impossible' part? First of all, more than one person found a way to hack the game in order to be able to hunt Jhen Mohran in offline. And this have brought me to the idea of doing a run starting from hacked saveRAM. But of course, this would break TASVideos run submission rules, so the run itself would remain unofficial. The other idea is to ACE the thing. But I have no data about anyone achieving anything like a game-breaking bug that may bring to be able to do that. Succeeding in such feat goes far, far over my possibilities, but the dream remains. Until the day I or anyone in the world would do it. I still keep wondering how awesome would be. What kinda of superhuman tricks would be used. What kind of route planning. And how fast would be comparing to the solo world record. Well, what I can provide for the moment, is data about the game mechanics. There are a lot of informations that could be used to have a very fast Jhen Mohran kill, while at the same time giving a very entertaining fight, unlike most video in which the player just keeps hitting the same spot most of the time. The weapon to use would ineed be the bowgun, because of its ability to hit Jhen Mohran before it get very close to the ship, and also because of its ability to hit the most vulnerable spot of this monter's body: the inner mouth. Jhen Mohran guide: https://www.gamefaqs.com/wii/943655-monster-hunter-tri/faqs/60456 Bowgun guide: https://www.gamefaqs.com/wii/943655-monster-hunter-tri/faqs/59978 Bowgun damage formula: https://www.gamefaqs.com/wii/943655-monster-hunter-tri/faqs/59704 Cheat codes: http://geckocodes.org/?c=RMHE08 I really hope someone with the necessary knowledge and experience will consider to try to realize this.
By the way, there is a regular TAS on NicoVideo, tough I have no idea who is the author and why didn't submit it to TASVideos. I hate it so much when stuff is in any way restricted to online and therefore inevitably lost to history at some point. That concept is such a terrible thing, I really wish that TASVideos would be willing to bend the rules for such cases.
Current project: Gex 3 any% Paused: Gex 64 any% There are no N64 emulators. Just SM64 emulators with hacky support for all the other games.

I think you misunderstood... TASVideos rules are aganist my idea because it involves an hacked saveRAM state-starting movie. The real problem is that Monster Hunter Tri servers are not operative anymore... So hacking the game is literally the only known way to access online-exclusive game contents. And the only way to do so without breaking TASVideos' rules, would be to use Arbitrary Code Execution by a clean movie. Quite hard, but still possible.

Could you hack the SRAM for just a verification movie? I believe there was a precedent set a while back for using Action Replay on verification movies if all it does is unlock certain features of the game that cannot be accessed normally anymore, and I think this definitely counts. As long as the hacking does nothing but unlock that hunt (i.e, no stat hacking, a Judge would have to check for things like that) and the actual submission file does not use any cheats or hacking, it should be allowable.

Thanks for the info, but there is another problem: it looks like Dolphin in unable to play movies from savestate for this game. I tried many times, but it crashes right after starting playing the movie, no matter what are the settings.

Possibly a bug, could you try it with 5.0 stable?

I already tried that, and the other 4.x versions as well. I should contact the developers.

Monster Hunter is ultra boring and repetitive. Not even a TAS can save it.
"Genuine self-esteem, however, consists not of causeless feelings, but of certain knowledge about yourself. It rests on the conviction that you — by your choices, effort and actions — have made yourself into the kind of person able to deal with reality. It is the conviction — based on the evidence of your own volitional functioning — that you are fundamentally able to succeed in life and, therefore, are deserving of that success." - Onkar Ghate

That's why I'm thinking about a Jhen Mohran fight with bowgun, which would feature a lot of different situations and tricks. Edit: btw, I personally hardly get bored with TASs that make bored most people, like Pokémon TASs. Edit2: I just figured you were talking about the game itself, and not just the speedruns or speedkills. Well, I tell you I sincerely love this game and played down to the bone with a lot of dedication, expecially the online part, on which I had a lot of fun with a lot of people.
