Submission Text Full Submission Page
TAS optimized to obtain both the best possible performance for each event and overall best run considering the previous constraint.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 1.11.9 for PS1
  • Achieve best performance for each event, and finish the game as fast as possible.
  • Offering the first legit TAS for this un-TASed game and hope it will be beaten soon.

Comments

The game has a in-built autofire detector and prevent you from using brute button mashing. This leads to a more subtile mashing

Stage by stage comments

100m

Pure speed. Forward leaning is useless.

Long jump.

Jump as late as possible, with optimum angle of 47 degrees. Continue to mash in the air. Foul is the fastest for the two last attempts.

Shot Put

Throw as late as possible with an angle of 41 degrees. Stop mashing to accelerate as late as possible. Continue to mash in the air. Foul is the fastest for the two last attempts.

100m Free Style

Mashing buttons until turn. The best turn is frame perfect and avoid decreasing the speed.

110m Hurdle

Mashing the button while jumping relatively early for each hurdle. Forward leaning is usefull for finish.

High Jump

First jump is to set the proper height, the second is the world record. Last one is the fastest possible foul.

Hammer

Release the hammer as late as possible, avoid mashing for 3 frames to sync the release with the latest moment before foul. Two last attempts are foul.

Triple Jump

Only the last jump make the performance. Push X as late as possible with an angle of 45 degrees.

Javelin

Best angle is 44 degrees, continue to mash while in the air.

Pole Vault

First jump sets the altitude as high as possible. Second jump is the world record. It requires to jump it backward. Last jump is a fast foul.

Discus

Avoid mashing for 2 frames to throw it as close as possible to the line.

Other comments

There is room for improvements as this run does not exploit glitches. It appears some RAM adresses change while pushing buttons in the pre-events, so there is probably something to do with it.

I decided to go ahead an begin cleaning up your input... then this hit. Your Time on 100m Track & Field: 6.37 My Time: Also, a thing to point out is that 45° is better than 47° in throwing and jumping events, I'll double check this factor, as it could be different in this game. Ok, for this game 47° is where you want to hit. Case in point with Shot Put. Your Distance: 29.84m My Distance: There's also the other fact where your input is slow off the gate. You can skip that Konami Screen.

Sure, feel free to modify everything you want, this is not supposed to be "my" TAS. This is my very, very first time in TAS and I'm still pretty bad with the tools so my apologies if things are sometimes wrong. I'm a complete beginner and any feedback from you guys will allow me to propose something better next time. I hope this is a good basis for anyone who would want to give it a try.

Welcome, Napoleon! I found this quite entertaining, especially when you left the computer players way behind. I really encourage you to do the small fixes to make it optimal and then resubmit it. I'll vote 'yes' for that one as well.

Since the game doesn't take a long time to do (especially since half of it is mashing). I decided to do a TAS it through myself: Link to video Time Comparison for those that don't want to watch the video:
100m Dash: 6.37sec | 6.29sec
Long Jump: 12.12m | 12.37m
Shot Put: 29.84m | 29.88m
100m Free Style: 34.53sec | 34.53sec
110m Hurdle: 6.89sec | 6.89sec
High Jump: 2.87m | 2.87m
Hammer: 107.81m | 107.81m
Triple Jump: 22.71m | 22.73m
Javelin: 121.56m | 121.56m
Pole Vault: 9.17m | 9.17m
Discus: 92.24m | 92.25m
(Left is Napoleon. Right is me.) In terms of time; faster is better. In terms of distance; further/higher is better. Your run is fairly solid for most of the throwing categories. And each choice you did for Fouls were greatly planned... Except for the High Jump's, where you actually decided to do the jump and get fouled, instead of failing to jump altogether. Just you have issues which makes your scores worse than it should be. A point out: I left my memory card in that encode, cause I forgot to check if the game tells you off for not having one in... It doesn't. Now my Country is American. And I also did a better Long Jump that what I have on video/in the comparison: So even mine might have improvements at points.

Great, well done. May I use your file so that it already includes your corrections ? I'll revisit each event and do my best to achieve the best results. The next submission will be more solid for sure !

Using trick? I don't know why, but seeing that little commentary from the game is amusing to me. It's like it's self aware.
This is only a little obsessive.

OK, I've better understood the way the game calculates speed, and I could already improve your score Spikestuff. I'll come back with a much cleaner TAS !

Wouldn't be better to cancel the submission at this point? By the way, I voted Yes.
