Does this game have an ending? the farthest i can get is somewhere on the 25ish level or 26 max. the game gets madly hard after 23.

No ending that I know of, and I've been in levels numbering in the hundreds.

I was thinking of doing this, but it is too slow, imo.

It's a level-based shooting game (and a very, very good one) kind of superficially similar to Space Invaders.

Err, no, I got in the 100+ range by playing on a real NES. I think I died in the 130s.

ROM used: "Galaga # NES.nes" http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/884927574/Galaga_ST1.fm2 http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/365176989/Galaga_ST2.fm2 http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1915602638/Galaga_ST3.fm2 these movies are in succession, until i figure out how to combine them, either via a specific program or hex editing, i post these for critique as i figure out how to combine the files. I wont continue until i get the 3 files combined and working. i think it will be pretty easy tho. The reason i had them seperated was because i didn't know how to continue a previous TAS session. so yeah. here. and i will also see if i can get a good copy of this rom. don't worry, i wont ask you guys. i know better. If anyone can confirm if this rom is correct or incorrect please tell me. here's the checksum: 87017ff03c1c27625a63e56f2438fdd0

Sorry to give you a little more work, but there is a problem in your movie: the rom you used is Galaga (E).nes the correct should be Galaga (U).nes, so, you have to start it all over again... and to resume recording your movie, unmark the Open Read-Only option when you load your movie, then load the latest save state, the rest is okay.

Galaga's such a simple game that I'd be surprised if he were unable to get them to sync up again on a different ROM. Might require some hex editing, though.

He only passed two normal stages and a bonus stage, I don't know if hex editing a movie made with an E rom to work with a U rom will be easier...

I want to do a TAS for this game, but don't know how. I know how to get the emulator working, and record, but for what would i submit it for. I was thinking either getting 1,00,000, points, or quickly beating the default high score (30,000), but I don't know. Any input would be appreciated.

I'm afraid I'm not sure how to make Galaga TAS look entertaining. Arcade game players have essentially perfected this game during its lifespan, so nothing you do will look superhuman (you can look here for some of the examples — not necessarily the best replays available). Besides, there is very little you can do to speed it up.

I'm not sure what a final product would look like, but I think it'd be cool to watch, even if it does tie or barely tops the diehards' scores. -Make sure every shot connects -Be flashy and entertaining where possible -Make sure everything gets destroyed

If your talking like that than I'm not you guy. I was thinking about making something not insanely long to start competition, I don't expect this to stay for very long. I was thinking of making what I think is the highest quality I can do. Of course I'm familiar with this game, but I'm not great. If you think it's a good idea than I'll record getting to the defualt high score. But I think if that video gets published than it'll inspire people to beat it. So, just tell me if it's a good idea, and I'll have it recorded and submitted by morning.

Well, what I said above would be the reason. I don't want to discourage you (if anything, it's your call), but if you want to make an entertaining movie and not just to fill a quota for a game not present on TASVideos, I'd suggest taking a somewhat more modern and versatile game. For instance, TRT is contemplating a run of Space Invaders Extreme 1 or 2 here, maybe you can help him do it? It's at least better than Galaga. In terms of shmups you can also take a look at Gradius Gaiden (PS1), this unassisted demo being a nice example of what to expect. Other possible choices would be Einhänder, G.Darius (both PS1), probably Soukyugurentai (PS1/Saturn). I'd also suggest DoDonPachi (arcade/PS1) or Battle Garegga (arcade/Saturn), but I believe these require too much work at this point. If you still want this to be a Galaga TAS, I would suggest finding a goal that would make it short (under 6-8 minutes preferably).

While I'd love to see an Einhänder TAS, I suspect it will require significant ammo management, making it tricky for a newcomer to attempt. Still, I'd love to see someone take it on. Another shmup you could take a look at would be Recca, for the NES. Whatever TAS you do, you should make certain to do things that wouldn't be possible in real time. The reason why Galaga is difficult in that respect is that people have had so much time to practice and perfect it that very little is impossible in real time; thus, a TAS of the game would not look particularly impressive. Good luck with your TASing!

Knowing just a bit about the game, I think Galaga could be an ok - not great - TAS. As I recall, the game gives differential points depending on how enemies are killed. For normal bugs, twice as much if they're attacking vs in formation. For Galaga's, I think, 800 if they're attacking with 1 escort, 1600 if they have 2. Doubtlessly, one could make use of this, along with never missing a shot/having one shot hit multiple bugs to do things that make it clear it's not a human playing.

Before you submit, you should put the movie up for critique so that other people can take a look at it. You can upload the input file to Microstorage for others to download. You'll get a friendlier reception in this thread than you would in a submission on the workbench; submissions are presumed to be polished works with multiple iterations behind them. Whether deservedly so or not, people tend to get a bit grumpy if there's lots of noticeable improvements in a submitted movie.

You needed to provide a file extension, like so: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1075678755/a.fm2
