This is the long-awaited entirely new movie of Rockman 2, making of which was started in March 19th 2004.
Finalfighter's comments about this movie are at: http://www.globetown.net/~rockmovie/aaa.htm
This movie is played by Morimoto and Finalfighter.
I'll skip to the thanks part:
Thanks to
  • Nori for making Famtasia
  • Norix for making VirtuaNES
  • Bisqwit for consultation in game glitches
  • blip for making the invaluable 60 fps Famtasia patch
  • Kuwata for a Rockman 2 level editor
  • Hirano for consultation in ladder and wall tricks
  • Terimakasih for consultation in "shutter technique" (?)
  • The Rockmania site
  • Rockの遊戯館 site
  • SEASIDE LABORARY site for cheat codes
  • WASP site
  • The Joytokey program
  • The Stirling binary editor program
Important note: Finalfighter explicitly forbids republishing this movie (and AVI files made of it) on commercial and advertisement-paid sites.
  • Made with Famtasia
  • Abuses luck (weapon refills, boss behavior)
  • Takes a lot of advantage of game glitches
  • Takes damage to save time
  • No warps, no passwords
A detailed commentary will be coming later (at least in Japanese).

Bisqwit: If someone manages to convert this to FCM, please contact me. I'd like to make the AVI with FCEU (because of superior emulation quality).

seeing as how the movie is already published, no use in voting (would've voted yes anyway). i enjoyed all the abusing of bugs and extra clever use of items. just looking at the picture on the download page with megaman on a jetski below the platform made me think "what the hell???" but like others mentioned, it does kinda bother me a little the number of times megaman gets hit. one of the things i loved about the original movie was how he breezes through the stages and DECIMATES the bosses without taking a single hit. the original airman, flashman, and quickman battles with the p-shooter still amazes me even today. i am curious how many extra seconds a "no ugly hits" movie would be :/

Correction, he took one hit at the end of the Woodman fight.

Considering it would need a completely different route in order to be able to kill some obstacles fluently (which would again mean that some shortcuts can't be used), it's very difficult to estimate. If the route wasn't changed, I'd sum roughly: - 00:00:31 - 2 seconds (kill the shell, wait for things to move out from way) - 00:01:33 - 4 seconds (for a period Bubbleman is too well protected, must wait for better opportunity) - 00:02:41 - 3 seconds: wait until the robot jumps (or kill it and wait for it to shrink enough to jump over) - 00:03:30 - 1 second: avoid colliding with Flashman - 00:05:25 - 3 seconds: wait until the robot jumps (or kill it and wait for it to shrink enough to jump over) - 00:06:54 - 2 seconds: must wait for shooting range - 00:11:33 - 4 seconds: avoiding hits here would need another strategy - 00:16:49 - 3 seconds: hit-avoider has no other choice but to wait - 00:18:10 - 3 seconds: this cool strategy can't be used in a no-hit movie - 00:18:41 - 4 seconds: there's more to this strategy than it looks. Try it yourself. Notice the position of the item-3 when Rockman reaches the upper platform. - 00:20:41 - 3 seconds: don't forget to count the weapon switch times. - 00:20:55 - 1 second: taking hit allows to get closer to the target and thus shoot faster. - 00:22:15 - 4 seconds: likely also weapon switch times - 00:25:34 - 1 second: taking hit allows to get closer to the target and thus shoot faster. Total: 74 seconds

At 16:55 Morimoto Final Fighter could have presumably placed himself inside the wall above him and headed off screen to the right. I was wondering where that leads. Probably to a crash or something. But I'm just curious.

I was just watching it again and I have one question. At 4:43, why doesn't he use the floating platform thing (item3, I think) to avoid having to backtrack for a bit? He switches to it about 2 seconds later anyway, and it's not about conserving the energy (there's plenty left at the end of the level). I'm sure there's a very good reason, I just want to know it. Is it simply slower? Still, this movie is simply amazing.

I thought of that, too, and I actually tried this one first before mentioning it :-) Turns out it's too high to reach.

This one is easy to answer. Welcome to glitchland! https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/rockman2-bluh.fcm Here we introduce the concept of "visual screen" and "physical screen". I'm expaining them in detail at: http://tasvideos.org/GameResources/NES/Rockman#toc19 .

Damn, you're right. Although it is possible to jump from the lone red block, throw item3, backtrack (hopefully less than the normal way) and land again on the red block, then jump forwards again and land on the item3 that is now stuck to the wall, I'm not sure if that would be any faster. I have a feeling this has been tested extensively. Edit: I did a small amount of testing, and my not-so-optimized result is that this could save approximately one second. I might just be dreaming... I sure am not going to test any more, because I need frame advance and Famtasia doesn't have it. Why, Famtasia, why must you suck so much? Aaaaarrgghhh...

I'm baffled. Again. Congratulations Blublu. I posted this on Finalfighter's guestbook - let's see what he says. :P

Nice. I didn't actually try it there. I tried it over by the spring robots.

Could he have used the Item 1 at the Airman entrance to glitch through the wall? (7:45) He did it at Woodman. And in a few other places iirc. EDIT: It might be possible to do it in Crashman's stage if you use Item 3 in the first room as well. (I haven't tested this though)

I asked him this many times, but he insisted that the gain is cancelled out by switching weapons.

Not in the first room. It requires that the Item thinks the way is all free. If the Item sees a ceiling, it'll disappear.

He does the same thing at Metalman. But then again, it's from Item 2 -> Item 1 -> Boomerang, shorter submenu time I suppose, but I can't imagine that the timing on all three of those is within 10 frames. I'll give it a test.

What is the value of a good idea that doesn't work? :P https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/rockman2-woodman-fail.fcm https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/rockman2-woodman-fail.avi Too bad pausing resets acceleration. Ps: Took 2367 rerecords to do that.

Reply #35 says that this thing wasn't thought at all, but I'm a little lost with #36. It lists some ideas for various levels, I think.

Blublu's routine had never before been attempted as a possible conformation. So yeah, he hadn't tried that yet. :)

Yeah, those are definitely suggestions for improvements. Is he making a new movie already? I saw you suggested using FCEU, that's probably a good idea. The file format is quirky but frame advance more than makes up for it.

I don't know. Earlier he said he's quite exhausted with Rockman 2 now. The same was also apparently the reason for Morimoto's long pause with it. He simply got sick and tired of it, so to say. And yeah, I've been advertising FCEU to him for a while.

Faaaaaantastic. Absolutely astounding. Can't say I blame him for wanting to take a break, after being picked at for a year to continue.

I just watched this and Morimoto's old video back-to-back, and my complaints are now void. Anything I might think is "wrong" with this video, I now consider insignificant. The jumping technique in Air Man's stage alone is absolutely astounding. It's just too bad the Time Stopper had to be used in Quick Man's stage, since that was one of the things I really like about the old video. I just have one question that would be reletive to the second fight with Wood Man. How much damage can a Crash Bomb do to Wood Man if it explodes on his shield, instead of hitting him directly? Might this be faster than running up to him and using the Air Shooter? Since I cannot read any form of the Japanese language and do not trust translators like Babelfish, I don't know if this has been attempted. It probably has been, but just in case it hasn't...

Seeing as they have only 1 Crash Bomb at that point it doesn't really matter.

I have read (though never been able to perform) that a single Crash Bomb, if placed properly, can take out Wood Man. If this is the case in the Japanese version/Difficult mode, then it would likely be faster than running up to him and using the Air Shooter.
