Jungle Hunt - for Commodore 64

Originally titled Jungle King, the main character was a guy in a loincloth. However both the name and some graphics were changed after a trademark infringement lawsuit by the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs (creator of Tarzan). Jungle Hunt was released by Taito for arcade in 1982 and ported to multiple home systems by Atari.

The premise:

The wife of Sir Dudley, Lady Penelope, was kidnapped by a bunch of cannibals. Sir Dudley (some generic guy in a pith helmet) must travel through the jungle to save her.
There are four stages (for which I've made up names) that Sir Dudley must traverse to save his beloved.
  • Stage 1 - Tarzan Wannabe
    • Sir Dudley must swing from rope/vine to rope/vine through the canopy of the jungle trees...apparently there must be something very dangerous about the grass below.
    • The only real obstacle here are monkeys climbing on some vines that will knock you off if one touches your hands.
    • After ten ropes/vines worth of swinging Dudley dives head first out of the jungle and into the river.
  • Stage 2 - Crocodile Hunter
    • Sir Dudley must swim across a crocodile infested river to continue his quest.
    • Obstacles: In addition to the crocodiles (which can be killed by a simple knife poke), there are air bubbles which Dudley can become stuck in and drug to the surface.
    • Side Note: Dudley must be very talented as he is able to change hats, remove his shirt, put on what looks like fishing waders, and apply spray tan mid-dive before entering the water.
  • Stage 3 - Dodgeball (or Boulder Dash...whichever you prefer)
    • After climbing out of the river (and changing clothes again), Sir Dudley must run up the gently sloping hillside while dodging the rocks and boulders bouncing down the hill. Perhaps these are being thrown down at Dudley by the cannibals.
    • Obstacles: Small rocks, Big Boulders.
  • Stage 4 - No Soup for You!
    • Upon reaching the top of the mountain, our intrepid explorer must save his wife from being cooked into person soup by the cannibals.
    • Obstacles: 2 Cannibals and a giant boiling cauldron.
    • To save Lady Penelope, you must simply jump up to her and the rope in which she is being held.

TAS Notes

  • BizHawk 1.13.0 used with default settings.
  • Game is a cartridge version.
  • Objective was fastest completion.
  • The game is set to 'Advanced' difficulty.
    • Adds the monkeys to Stage 1.
    • Unnoticeable change to Stage 2
    • Stage 3 rocks and boulders are more randomized in both frequency and traveling speed.
    • Unnoticeable change to Stage 4
  • Stages 2 and 3 I would consider autoscrollerish.
  • The game repeats indefinitely after saving Lady Penelope, so only one cycle of stages is completed for this TAS.

Comments

I grew up with my own Commodore 64 and am thrilled that BizHawk now supports C64 for TAStudio. Though I had it, I rarely played this game on my own C64.

feos: Some places look like the player loses some time there, but it's due to clunky controls and mechanics. And others just don't waste time despite the impression.
Decent game, decent run, feedback below average, accepting for Vault.
Fog: Processing.

Temp encode: Link to video The run itself is good, but to me, it was also a tad boring to watch. No vote on entertainment. It's good for the Vault, however.

This game is the same as Atari 2600 version, have some differences he have not monkeys on creepers in the jungle and have some differences for goes to ending. Not more things to watched finally. For me, it's typically the games genre who isn't a good idea for TASing. Your job are good but this game, for me, isn't a good choice for create entertaining. it's MEH VAULT

That is the clearest bit of Vault material I've seen in quite some time. Seems very technically impressive though

I completely understand...unfortunately many C64 games aren't the most exciting things to watch. Sadly Jungle Hunt is much more entertaining than a lot of other C64 games. Still, striving for vault runs can be a worthy goal at times.

It's a pretty plain looking, slow-paced game. However, I liked the variety from the different stages, so watching the run actually felt a bit like a jungle adventure. It was worth a "meh" at least.

Terrible sound from that game, especially from that system.

As someone who played (but never beat) the Atari 2600 version as a kid, it was satisfying to see you breeze through it.

Wrong video standard was used. this game is NTSC, and was intended to be played at 60fps on a US model c64. It would have made the video faster too. :)
