Jungle Hunt - for Commodore 64
Originally titled Jungle King, the main character was a guy in a loincloth. However both the name and some graphics were changed after a trademark infringement lawsuit by the estate of Edgar Rice Burroughs (creator of Tarzan). Jungle Hunt was released by Taito for arcade in 1982 and ported to multiple home systems by Atari.
The premise:
The wife of Sir Dudley, Lady Penelope, was kidnapped by a bunch of cannibals. Sir Dudley (some generic guy in a pith helmet) must travel through the jungle to save her.
There are four stages (for which I've made up names) that Sir Dudley must traverse to save his beloved.
- Stage 1 - Tarzan Wannabe
- Sir Dudley must swing from rope/vine to rope/vine through the canopy of the jungle trees...apparently there must be something very dangerous about the grass below.
- The only real obstacle here are monkeys climbing on some vines that will knock you off if one touches your hands.
- After ten ropes/vines worth of swinging Dudley dives head first out of the jungle and into the river.
- Stage 2 - Crocodile Hunter
- Sir Dudley must swim across a crocodile infested river to continue his quest.
- Obstacles: In addition to the crocodiles (which can be killed by a simple knife poke), there are air bubbles which Dudley can become stuck in and drug to the surface.
- Side Note: Dudley must be very talented as he is able to change hats, remove his shirt, put on what looks like fishing waders, and apply spray tan mid-dive before entering the water.
- Stage 3 - Dodgeball (or Boulder Dash...whichever you prefer)
- After climbing out of the river (and changing clothes again), Sir Dudley must run up the gently sloping hillside while dodging the rocks and boulders bouncing down the hill. Perhaps these are being thrown down at Dudley by the cannibals.
- Obstacles: Small rocks, Big Boulders.
- Stage 4 - No Soup for You!
- Upon reaching the top of the mountain, our intrepid explorer must save his wife from being cooked into person soup by the cannibals.
- Obstacles: 2 Cannibals and a giant boiling cauldron.
- To save Lady Penelope, you must simply jump up to her and the rope in which she is being held.
TAS Notes
- BizHawk 1.13.0 used with default settings.
- Game is a cartridge version.
- Objective was fastest completion.
- The game is set to 'Advanced' difficulty.
- Adds the monkeys to Stage 1.
- Unnoticeable change to Stage 2
- Stage 3 rocks and boulders are more randomized in both frequency and traveling speed.
- Unnoticeable change to Stage 4
- Stages 2 and 3 I would consider autoscrollerish.
- The game repeats indefinitely after saving Lady Penelope, so only one cycle of stages is completed for this TAS.
I grew up with my own Commodore 64 and am thrilled that BizHawk now supports C64 for TAStudio. Though I had it, I rarely played this game on my own C64.
feos: Some places look like the player loses some time there, but it's due to clunky controls and mechanics. And others just don't waste time despite the impression.
Decent game, decent run, feedback below average, accepting for Vault.
