I haven't seen much talk here about history so I thought I'd bring it up in this topic. Over the past few years I've been really interested in the study of history. Really, I shouldn't say I'm "interested in history" because "history" is such a broad term that means literally everything that ever happened in humanity's past, which is quite a lot of stuff. Other people who tell me they're interested in the study of history seem to usually be interested in specific aspects of it. I've seen a lot of people who like military history, or the history of weapons. Some tend to like political aspects of history a lot (in fact, political and military history are often the things that get the most focus). Personally, I like the cultural aspects of history. In other words, when I look at a time period and study it, I ask myself "what would it be like if I suddenly appeared in this time period X in location X and had to live the life of the general population? What would my daily tasks be, and how would my life be significantly different than in the 2010s US? Who would I meet, and how would I have to speak for people to understand me?" Things like that. By the way, some historical study favorites are: America in the late 1700s, 1890s-1920s, 1950s-60s, 1980s-90s, the Vikings, and the Roman Empire in the BCs. I feel like learning about history is a fun and interesting hobby to have. Does anyone else happen to share this passion?

They are certain periods of history I know a lot about. The problem is aspects of it are hard to discuss when you're dealing with people who have significant shortcomings in knowledge, or worse people who're blinded by their own political or ideological beliefs. The main thing I've learned from it is how cyclical it is. There is nothing happening now that hasn't happened in the past; only technology and scientific advancement is linear. For example what's going in Europe now is very similar to what happened during the final days of Rome.

I've studied 1929-1945 quite a bit and am still delving into it (especially the second Sino-Japanese war at the moment).

I find history very interesting and very enlightening to answer many questions about the world's current political state, but sadly it's a nerd topic for nerds, so I can't really talk about it with anyone.

I don't think it's a good idea to devolve this thread about history into a thread about current politics. While it's good to know history as to not repeat the mistakes of the past, let's just keep it at that: History. Let's just leave current politics out of it, shall we? Discussing current events only leads to flamewars, because no matter how civil people try to keep the discussion, drastically differing opinions will inevitably clash and the discussion will inevitably heat up.

I agree with this, and have moved the posts in question to here. Admittedly it's hard to avoid politics in history discussion, but if people want to discuss the merits of contemporary ideologies they can do so elsewhere.
