I've been thinking a lot about Zelda 1 lately. A found a couple things, but they may not be too interesting. First of all, look at Michael Fried's 33 min video here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5245277851446670151&q=Zelda+speed At around 4:28, he walks left, and then walks left again. It may be faster to walk left, then immediately right, and then immediately left. Second of all, in this thread: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 I say,

Possibly... but how is that important now? He's coming from the upper right gambling house (which is not used in current tases).

You need the ladder to complete each of those levels...

http://members.shaw.ca/richu/Hyrule_Glitch_Tour.fcm Made a demo abusing the glitch to its fullest. The game looks really broken now. I kept finding more shortcuts so I put most of them in one movie plus some playing around with armos and the black area. It should be a fun watch and I had a lot of fun making it. There are shortcuts all over the place, but I think the ones most useful for improving the TAS are: -Glitch to L3 -Glitch to L5 -Glitch from L7 to Graveyard -Glitch from L1 to Arrow shop -Glitch to L2 or L8 (glitching from the coast will probably be faster, but going through the forest looks better) And I’m pretty sure that these are the rules that stick (let me know if something’s missing or inaccurate): -Link can only completely enter block from the bottom since he can already partly enter through the bottom. -If Link glitches to a screen, into a wall of 2 tiles or more, he will be unable to exit. Same goes for the screen he glitched from. -The black area contains current screen’s outlay, moved slightly to the left. However, entrances can’t be entered, rocks can’t be bombed, and bushes can’t be burned. Armos and ghosts can still be awakened. -Glitching left from any screen in column “A” will lead to “P” and up one row. A8 to P7, A7 to P6, etc. A1 leads to the starting screen. -Can’t glitch through barriers. L7 goriya, L9 entrance, old man, etc. -Glitching won’t work on stairs or doorways. So… really awesome glitch. It’s like the equivalent of zipping in a Megaman game. It’s also not that hard to do in real time; I’ve already incorporated it in my speedrun and it helps big time. Props and thanks to Baxter. ^_^

Link transcends the boundaries of space & time! Before any of the time travel games, even. Way to go, Sleepz & co!

They can, although I haven't seen a place where this is likely to save time. edit: demo here Btw props to you on your findings, especially the left/right wrapping glitch.

When I try to enter a cave in the black area, its just an empty square and nothing happens. Probably doesnt save time, but how did you get in? edit: ah I see now. It has to be opened normally first. thanks.

Hahahaha, another super popular game broken like hell! So, this raises a few questions. Namely, when this glitch will be utilized in a future run, will you create another category or will it obsolete Phil&Baxters current published run? Edit: Sleepz, so great to see you here again! :) Edit 2: Baxter, Quadrun is over, you can change your avatar now :)

Ah, very nice find! I already suspected it could be done, but I never got it to work (which was due to the fact that I also used the left or right arrow keys in my attempts). This will save lots and lots of time in a TAS, it might even enable some new routes, especially in second quest. Edit: My theory/dream of entering level 4 without a raft is still half a tile away :(

Interesting glitch, I think this should be allowed to obselete the current run.

"This" being what? There's nothing to obsolete the current run with yet, at least until a new run is done. And if anything, it would be discussed after it's done.

LOL at link walking in the status window, a run using this should definitely obsolete the current one.

Questions for SDA people, since Sleepz says he is incorporating this into a speedrun: 1. Would walking in the status window be leaving the game boundaries? I would think so. 2. Would skipping from one side of the screen to the other be mysterious warping? This is a tougher call, but I would still lean toward yes. Awesome glitches btw. I see the directions for doing the top/bottom glitches, but how do you do the left/right glitches? If there is a way to view input in the emulator (there probably is), I can't find it.

Well, we shouldn't forget that this glitch only works in the overworld (exept for the rooms we already skipped in the current TAS). Most of the game takes place inside the levels anyway, so it's not like the entire run will be different.

Well I wouldn't really call MM that broken. It's just the glitches from OOT minus temple skips and BA.

O.O?! Dayum that is one heck of a glitch! I really am curious how it could've hidden from us for so long! Pity the river stops some of the glitch, or this could be just one insane run! Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

A lot of Nintendo's games seem to be really, really broken... maybe it's some kind of internal design mantra, something about how they write code over there that makes their games susceptible to boundary glitches.

Very nice. I remember a video TSA put out... He glitched by accident attempting his speedrun. It should have occured to me to fuzz test to recreate the glitch, but it didn't. How did you guys find it? By accident, or by fuzz testing?

This is what I think is about the "history" (:P) of the glitch: 1) The key to the glitch is using the arrow keys in a specific direction at exactly the right spot. I think the combination of the basically 1 frame window, with pressing a certain, non logical direction with the arrow keys is the reason why this glitch wasn't discovered yet. Funny thing is that actually, there is no really special stuff like left+right or anything required to do the glitch. Anyway, while working on one of the last rooms at level 9 of the TAS I was making with Phil, I placed a bomb at exactly the right spot. The fact that a bomb was placed made the window of moving into a other direction bigger (since Link is positioned longer on the right spot, because he is busy placing the bomb). Then I accidently walked half a into a solid block. Here is the movie of how is exactly happened (you will also see how close we were to completing the TAS) 2) I tested right away what exactly caused the glitch. It wasn't really hard to figure out how to reproduce it. The glitch was also possible with bombs, the sword and other weapons, but laying a bomb takes shorter than using a bomb. I tested the glitch on the room below the room where I ran into the glitch, and by using it, it was possible to enter the corridor without killing the enemies. I took the bad news to Phil (and it was bad news, since we were nearly done with the movie), and we had to redo everything from level 5 (since this was the first level with such a room that could be skipped. Here is the TAS we made after redoing half of the levels. 3) After the TAS had been published, Hanzou mentioned that the glitch was also possible without using a weapon like bombs or sword. This saves the time of placing the bombs, and it saves bombs. 4) Sleepz mentions in the submission thread of the Zelda submission that the glitch can also take you over two blocks if the ladder can be used on those blocks. This enables a new route for level 4 in the first quest (It will also save time at level 6 at the second quest). 5) I wanted to test possibilities with Link crossing blocks using a combination of the glitch and the ladder. The ladder only works for a few places with water at Hyrule overworld. I produced this movie, which walks from bottom to the top of the screen, using the ladder. At the end of walking on the water, I got to the land again, but 1/2 a tile higher than Link normally is. This gave me the idea that the glitch could be used to acces the top of the screen. Here is the first movie I posted of doing this. I also posted several other movies to test its potential. 6) Up till now, the glitch was only performed vertically. Sleepz found how to do it horizontally too, and created this thread, with a movie which shows some uses of doing the glitch horizontally, in combination of vertically.
