Well, since there doesn't seem to be a wishlist for this computer, and that we now have a core thanks to the excellent work of Asnivor, it is time to discuss a little about the games of this machine! :) (I'm not sure if this topic belongs here or in "Other Computers", but someone will move it, if necessary)

Thanks Patashu! From your list, I've finished Gradius/Nemesis, R-Type and Chase H.Q. with ZXhawk, for now :) This link can be interesting too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:ZX_Spectrum-only_games

From that list, this was always a particular favourite of mine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quazatron It is actually based on the C64's Paradroid but I guess its different enough (some might actually say better:) ) that it can appear on that list.

Yes, thats a good one. You should also try Transmuter: http://www.worldofspectrum.org/infoseekid.cgi?id=0009442 Codemasters though so distribution denied on WoS (although it will probably be in tosec)

I like the ship animation :) It's very similar to Gradius on certain levels (and the option selection too) :)

Some games are pretty impressive for the ZX Spectrum, with a lot of colors or big sprites. Link to video Link to video Link to video

I think this should be moved to the "other computers" sub-forum, since well... that's where the other threads for this platform are going to be moved there anyway after a new stable release of BizHawk with the core comes out. At least when that happens though.

I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.

For others who may be curious. I've already completed a TAS of this, but there's something wrong with ZX emulation in BizHawk that results in the game's music not playing...I'm delaying submission until this problem is solved (a bug report has already been submitted).

This should now be resolved in the master branch (dev build). With any luck the changes wont have caused any desyncs, but that all depends on whether the game is trying to read from the AY register on the same (some might say non-standard) port that it is trying to write to. This seems unlikely, but check for desyncs anyway.

Yep works great. No desyncs. I'll looking at submitting this once the next official release happens.

Dragon Ball: El Desafio del Doctor Gero (The Challenge of Doctor Gero in English), is a homebrew game based of the original DB series. Gameplay is nothing like I was expecting though with it being an isometric adventure game.

I've also considered Jetpac, since it's definitely one of the all-time greats on the ZX Spectrum, and probably ranks even higher if you consider its status as an exclusive to that platform; plus, the fact that it was one of the few games to release on cartridge as well as cassette tape gives a rare opportunity for a ZX Spectrum TAS that can skip the shitty tape loading time (although that particular dump has been really hard to find in my experience). There's even a [romhack|https://highriser.itch.io/jetpacrx] for the tape version called Jetpac RX that enhances the gameplay and graphics, although it might be challenging to TAS since running it relies on tape manipulation features that BizHawk might not have.

It's not tape manipulation features; the game is presented as a pair of .pok files (instructions for an emulator on which memory locations to change). To run this in BizHawk (and real, unmodified hardware) you'd have to create a tape (or .tap file) that loads the patched game, and the text files provide full instructions on how to do that. So you'd just use that .tap file in BizHawk like normal.

Well, that aside, I just downloaded BizHawk and the game for the first time, and good GOD I am in RNG hell. The first stage of each cycle is easy enough of course since the two rocket parts spawn in the same place every time, but where the fuel spawns is HIGHLY pseudorandom based on your movement, and I can't seem to get it to appear where I want. I'm gonna give this a try for a while longer, but if I do end up cancelling this recording, then I'm gonna try Pentagorat next.

One wish I have is for ZXHawk to implement support for Sinclair Interface 2 (IF2) ROM cartridges. There were only 10 commercial releases in this format:
  • Jetpac
  • PSSST
  • Cookie
  • Tranz Am
  • Chess
  • Backgammon
  • Hungry Horace
  • Horace and the Spiders
  • Planetoids
  • Space Raiders
Prototype cartridges, third party conversions of various tape games, and unofficial cartridge hardware (>16KB ROMs) exist, but support (and movie publications) for these would be a low priority. There is a homebrew game called Mag the Magician which has a cartridge release. Various utilities like system test ROMs, ZX80/81 emulators (128K units only), and a bugfixed 48K system ROM also exist. The interface works by disabling the system ROM at $0000~$3FFF (ties /ROMCS to 5V) and mapping the cartridge ROM in its place. Details can be found at http://www.fruitcake.plus.com/Sinclair/Interface2/Interface/Interface2_Circuitry.htm. See Fuse for an emulator which implements IF2 ROM support. Note that the interface (including its joystick ports) does not work on +2A/+3 units due to incompatible pinouts. That behaviour should be emulated. Advantages in terms of TASing:
  • No tape loading is required, so movie times will better reflect actual gameplay
  • Game selection has good quality (PSION, Ultimate)
Disadvantages in terms of TASing:
  • Limited game selection
  • All commercial releases had tape versions (and the load times are already fairly short due to them targeting 16K units)
  • Limited unit selection due to +2A/+3 incompatibility
  • Only permitted joystick type is Sinclair, otherwise keyboard controls will need to be used
If IF2 ROM cartridge support is not being considered, then one can just treat this post as a wishlist for the games mentioned here.
Don't mind me, I was born on Friday the 13th. (I'm not TASing that NES game, okay?)
