About the game

Bugs Bunny & Taz: Time Busters is a Looney Tunes platform game, with some similarities with Spyro games. A notable feature of the game is the 2 players mode, one of them controlling Bugs Bunny and the other one Taz.

Comments

Differences between PSX and PC versions

The main difference is the loading times on PSX which are way longer. As for this short TAS, there is also a bad difference for the last boss only on PSX NTSC.

Speed and movement

Bugs and Taz have the same walking speed, but Taz is usually faster when he is spinning. On some stairs, spinning is slower than walking, while jumping as Bugs is faster than walking. Gliding with Bugs is slow and should only be used when necessary.

Stage by stage comments

Granwich

Pushing a box against an immovable Bugs may result in the box standing in the air, and if Bugs then teleported on this box, he will pass through the ground. Now it's important to know that when you are falling OOB, you will get teleported in a default position once you reach the bottom of the level (usually where you started the level), except if you are gliding as Bugs, in which case the game will just teleport you on top of the level.

Ghost Town

It's possible for Taz to Jump on Bugs' head with good positionning. The door locking the Count's Castle can be passed through if Bugs dives between it and Taz.

Count's Castle

The three doors to skip work the same way, except that you can't pass through the second one and you must teleport Taz on the other side.

Bloudcount battle

The count is manipulated to appear next to Bugs at the beginning. Only the first gargoyle can be "pushed" by Bugs, since the other ones will crush him. There is a huge difference for this fight in the PSX NTSC version compared with all the other ones (including PSX PAL) : you can't push the second and fourth gargoyles without hitting the count first. So was it better to use the NTSC or the PAL version of this game ? That's a good question.

Possible improvements

  • Not much apart from even better optimisations and maybe less lag

ThunderAxe31: Judging.
ThunderAxe31: I confirm that the length of this movie is longer than the RTA WR just due to the difference in loading times of PSX aganist PC version; this movie is actualy faster when it comes to actual gameplay segments.
Another thing that makes this movie slower is the fact that the final battle presents a difference only featured in the PSX NTSC version, as also mentioned by the author. However, the PSX NTSC version of this game is still preferred aganist the PSX PAL one since the difference would not be major. Also, if we take in account the difference in framerate, the movie time could even end up longer.
This movie is short, but features optimized major skips and it was appreciated by the audience. Accepting for Moons.

As a member of the speedrunning community of this game, I was impressed to see how this TAS made great use of the two players mode, for both great speed and entertainment, even if no new strat was actually found. Yes vote, nice work

Oh shit, it's the thing I always wanted to see done, and destroyed. (I don't think you have to end your input at skipping Granny's cutscene, since it loads into credits iirc, but w/e.) Yes is my vote. Love the destruction left behind on this game. Now all that's left is Lost in Time (which Moth has been working on for a long time) and Sheep, Dog 'n' Wolf/Sheep Raider. Spike does that mean you're not shotgunning this? Passing this game up? Hell no. Shotgun the Pubs. wishing his upload speed is faster than it is so he can clear his publications (and one claimed) in progress sooner

After Granny's cutscene the game asks you if you want to save or not. The last input was to select "no". Sheep Raider is on my list of possible ideas but I am not planning to do it in the near futur (1 hour TAS...)

Right, this is being for how the information was provided within the Judgement message.

Are you sure about that? If the PAL version is able to both catch and pass thanks to the final boss which it can do as the attack phases Count Blood Count makes are roughly 16-17 seconds and being able to avoid 2 attacking phases that's 32-34 seconds of time saved just from Count not attacking alone. We do have an account where PAL is preferred over NTSC, Crash 2. In Crash 2. Crash's Movement is faster on PAL and for the longer runs (any%/100%) the advantage of just Crash's movement alone is able to out-speed NTSC's load times. The only case where NTSC should be used is for "box glitch" due to those load times. However Time Busters isn't Crash 2. It has slower movement compared to the American counterpart. But thankfully, the boss fight is forgiving.

What should be taken is the game difference to NTSC which is ~87% slower, not to framerate which is 83% slower that should only come when gathering the final time. If the TAS was exactly the same it'll become 14116.62 frames and at PAL FPS (~49.765) that'll become 00:00.00 take 32/34 seconds off that time and we'd be something that's 22/24 seconds ahead of NTSC. (In Theory) If you wanted to say the method of finding was wrong and wanted to do it by framerate differences well it'll become 32/34 seconds faster than NTSC. (In Theory) If someone made this in actual practice the numbers would be interesting to know what a fight against Count would be like. lapogne36 wrote to me that it takes 10000 frames to get into Count. 10000/60 = 167secs 10000/50 = 200secs And that the final times would be similar. It's something that should be considered if someone wants to attempt to improve on this in the future as these numbers are down to the wire.
