Disney's Tarzan (often called Action Game) is the video game adaptation of the famous Disney cartoon in which we can follow the titular ape man's adventures while being raised by gorillas and growing up in the jungle, his life being full with interesting plot twists. In the game we can run, surf and climb our way through 13 levels of varying difficulty, going through challenges such as: being chased by elephants(Stampede, the 4th level), fighting against Sabor, the furious leopard (Sabor Attacks, the 6th level), guiding Jane, the female explorer, the girlfriend of Tarzan, away from baboons and other perils of the jungle (The Baboon Chase, 7th level), the adventure of Terk, Tarzan's gorilla friend, in the cluster of apes on the British camp (Trashing the Camp, 8th level), and finally, there's the last battle with the main antagonist, Clayton(Conflict with Clayton, 13th and last level).
The aforementioned things are done here as fast as possible, and without specifically paying attention to item collection, with a variety of smooth movement and one major glitch being used (the box clip at the end of the 8th level, a glitch requiring almost pixel perfection, which skips a huge slow climbing section, and along with it something like a bit more than ten seconds maybe). The run's correct TAS time is 26:09.3, which means it being timed from power-on to the last input(while rolling the credits). No deaths included, only taking damage in favour of faster speed in some places.
Since optimization possibilities are limited in this game, including any new routes or glitches, this TAS wasn't really hard to make, given that the author is good at running the PC version of this game in real time. There is most likely still time to save in this run, but with current knowledge it doesn't seem possible to improve at the moment. Maybe the future will surprise us.

Memory: Hi TheGreatestRoman and welcome to TASVideos. Here at TASVideos we want movies that aim for perfection. This TAS quite clearly was made without many TASing tools implemented. The menuing at the beginning is extremely subpar and in level 1 alone I managed to save 15 frames of gameplay in half a day in addition to menuing improvements: bk2 file.
Later levels are much worse, I was constantly able to find minor mistakes littered throughout. From not holding right soon enough at the start of a level to jumping directly into an enemy when you can easily jump over it by holding the jump button longer, this TAS is riddled with mistakes. I've checked 6 levels so far and pretty much all of them have such sloppiness. I believe that the TAS was made without using frame advance and was instead played in real time. We want TASes that demonstrate superhuman play, and sloppy mistakes are far from superhuman. I would recommend reading the TasingGuide before working on an improvement. I would also recommend that if such an improvement was made, it would be uploaded to userfiles and posted to the forums prior to submission.
Rejecting due to suboptimal play everywhere.

80 frames of blank input at the end. However I will not be providing a fix as this TAS is littered with mashing input from start to end and holds great menuing. This is a first attempt no less so welcome to the site you speedrunner. But I do recommend at least to go over it again and to take your time with this and use the tools that are available within Hawk to shave your time further with something like TAStudio. This is an RTA inputted TAS. Edit: Unless it's just me (but it's N64 emulation so it's probably everyone). The sound isn't emulating through for me at all. Anyone else get this, cause this is a break situation for this game for the time being (unless they use the PS1 version). Nevermind. This was a thing that was fixed in 2.3.

Use an official emulator version Every officially supported TAS emulator has a repository to host official releases obtainable as a package (like binaries). These official releases are supported by TASVideos. Using custom or interim builds compiled from emulator source code (from e.g. svn or git repositories) is not officially supported. Always make sure your movie syncs on the official releases; use interim builds at your own risk. If a movie syncs on some interim build, but doesn't sync on any official release, it will be rejected. Note that some emulators require interims because their official releases are infrequent and/or often outdated (including Dolphin and VBA-rr); for these emulators, interim versions are accepted on a case-by-case basis. If you are considering using such an emulator version, ask a judge if it is justified in your case. If it is clear that there is no other way to TAS your game, permission will be granted.
You didn't actually use BizHawk 2.0.0 (since it seems you looked at the movie version instead of the emulator version), but an interim release (specifically, this one). However, the TAS syncs on BizHawk 2.3 (an official release).

In the second to last level you occasionally throw some fruit that doesn't hit anything. Is that deliberate?

Idk what you are talking about rn, since I can't really watch it now. However, if you throw fruit in the air, it doesn't slow you down. Maybe it was an accident, but doesn't change much. If I threw it on the ground, then it maybe it was a minor mistake, sorry for that. But iirc I counted how many fruit each enemy needs.

Oh yeah, now that I'm at my PC, I kinda see what you are talking about. The thing is that while I was experimenting I came to the conclusion that while the first fruit doesn't hit the enemy, you can adjust your angle better while throwing fruit rather that without, so my following attacks could be more efficient.

I see you chose easy difficulty in the beginning. Can you tell me the differences? Why choose easy?

I run Easy in RTA too, that's why i chose that, I know the stars for it.. The notable differences are that while in Easy you get 5 lives at the beginning, while 3 in Medium and 1 in Hard. Also enemy hits deplenish your health bar more in the harder modes, also bananas replenish lesser health (iirc). And yes, while it would seem like you would just need to run through the stage in all difficulties, you actually need to collect bananas in order not to die, because I believe killing stuff would be slower Watch the current PC World Record for Hard difficulty (https://www.youtube.com/watch?658=&v=n2Ib0P4xIWo), I think you can see notable differences. Hence, I wanted to create a real speedrun-feeling, so I chose the mode in which you can just rush through the level without any backtracking necessary.

Trying to look into improvements, is the game normally unstable on N64? The game keeps crashing in this one spot for seemingly no reason.

I don't really know, but for me the game was on the edge of crashing in some levels too. It might be an emulator problem. I managed to run the movie on the emulator version I recorded it on, didn't crash for me but had some lag. What other emulators would you recommend? Afaik, Project64, which I use for casual gaming, isn't capable of TASing.

btw, where does it crash exactly? i recorded the whole thing to an AVI (not a valid encode though, missing some frames from start and also bad quality), I could check it.

I've been thinking about the PS1 version since yeah, it has those heccin load times but still, it is maybe more stable emulation-wise. The PC vesion is still ages faster, but afaik Hourglass doesn't work with it. I'll do a testrun on PS1 later just to see the timewise differences.

We account load differences by just looking at Stage v Stage performance.
