Hmm, it looks like you're aiming for Big Boss rank with no radar. Good luck on that!

UPDATE: level 9 done. (see first post) EDIT 3: level 9 beaten. i want to try again and see if theres a spot where i could use the chaff grenades differently. im almost positive it will be slower, but ill check anyhow. also, i found a neat trick with the fire before exiting the building. it only worked on the northern wall, in case you're wondering. im very close to being done. level 11 is the last massive one (finally figured out where and when to use the 5 remaining chaff grenades); 10, 12 & 13 are all relatively short.

UPDATE: level 11 ahead. 10 is done, and though the 'copter (or was that the Hind? i cant remember) appears for brief intervals, i couldn't get it any closer because of how it attacks. ill be starting 11 here in a minute or so. heres the thing: theres a part in this level, 2 actually, where i have to stay in an elevator for 50 floors. now... any suggestions on what the hell to do here? its the main reason im posting instead of editing because this part is BOUND to be boring. EDIT: its damn near 2500 frames. and so far the best things i can think of are: -either the Konami Code with Snake punching it in thin air -a bunch of push-ups -break dancing (Snake spinning on the floor and crawling and push-ups) -get in the box and run around -smoke... :) -IR goggles... im really not sure why id do this -wall crawling (or clinging... but crawling sounds nicer) -spin in circles and then fall down ...eh, any suggestions?

I'd like the breakdancing one. An idea would be to switch the IR goggles on and off while doing it, to make a "strobe" effect. Not too fast though; it could get to be an eyestrain.

cool. the only problem is that switching to IR googles puts you in a menu which halts gameplay. so ill do some breakdancing then and show the result.

UPDATE: FINISHED! and Gander was a bitch... nothing but RANDOMNESS... the first time in the entire movie i screamed a few expletives. anyhow, ill let everyone look at it and critique it. i eventually want to submit it. ...oh, and enjoy the elevator rides on level 11... the first one is a stab at breakdancing; the second is a bunch of push-ups and then Snake punching in the Konami Code directions

Okay, watched the whole deal. I've never played the game myself, so I'm not going to say anything about the routes or strategies used. Overall I kinda liked the movie, lots of action and a few 'close call' -moments to spice things up. The visuals of the game were also quite okay. But the movie is LONG, 1:27. The game has trouble keeping interest up at points, especially bad were the vents you crawled through and the postage center -thingie with the cardboard boxes. Codec-calls/discussions were also present in a MGS-esque manner, but they were skipped quite swiftly. Then again, boss battles were quite fun to look at and especially the ending boss-marathon was good. Nothing too spectacular but quite solid run anyway.

ah, thank you Tombad. im glad at least people are watching it. :) i agree its quite long, but a lot of that i cant help (vents and conveyor belt as you mentioned). the AUTO-scroll was set in the beginning mainly for the end sequences so i could end ASAP since i already knew this game wouldn't be done in under an hour. if anything, it shows off the game and can be said it was at least attempted.

could you give a split version for last several stages? Last time I watch the first-9-stage version. I may have no time to review it from the beginning...

You could leave the emulator on Turbo speed for a while to fast-forward if your computer's fast enough. That's what I always do, since I'm still not comfortable with read-only mode.

oh, ok. ill do that and put it in the zip file. give me some time because it is a LONG game. :) EDIT: ok, done. heres a list of the savestates (also included in zip file; which is the same link as the first post :)) SGM1 - level 2 SGM2 - level 3 SGM3 - level 4 SGM4 - level 5 SGM5 - level 6, level 7 SGM6 - level 8 SGM7 - level 9, level 10 SGM8 - level 11 SGM9 - level 12, level 13 i have had no problem fast forwarding. 6 & 7 were combined because they are quite short. 9 & 10 are because of how 10 is really nothing more than a boss battle. and 12 & 13 are the final battles, which are not really that long either. remember: leave read only on (i only note this because of the constant times ive forgotten to do so and blamed it on desync)

Oh, the link went bad. -------------------- Forbidden You don't have permission to access /MG_GB_WiP.zip on this server. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Apache/1.3.33 Server at nvdata.pilif.ch Port 80 ------------------- What's more, why not get it published?

huh... thats odd... i hope i didnt do something wrong to piss pilif off... ...you can still DL it if you have an FTP client oddly enough. but perhaps when i come back from break i will submit it. i dont think i can improve it, but ive been wrong about these things in the past. that and i wanted to know if it was entertaining or worth getting published or if id just be wasting time in doing so.

Of course it's worthy of being published. I just wonder why I can download almost everything in http://nvdata.pilif.ch/ EXCEPT MG_GB_WiP.zip...

well, im around 112 seconds faster than my old version of the game, but thats at around level 4 which is 15-18 minutes in. i was spotted a total of 9 times in level 3 (yeah, im serious). im actually looking forward to being spotted; just to see if i can get away (no video game ruins minds discussion). a problem arises when it comes to elevators. they wont work in alert and caution mode. so ill have to piddle around a bit here and there (since some alerts like the one in level 8 are GOING TO HAPPEN regardless). i made an AVI of my original (and since i cant encode well, its a gig) to go by, somewhat. but considering that planning went out the window in lieu of being quicker, its just to remind me "see, heres where the electric floor is; whadja' think it was, disco?" or something of that nature. im progressing nciely thusfar (jinx 1-2-3). anyhow, im getting back to it. ill post a WiP sooner or later (later). BTW, can someone recommend some reliable file hosting. i know we have a thread for it somewhere, but im: 1-too lazy to look 2-looked before and tried those options; and filespace pisses me off 3-am too lazy to use the search feature again. sigh... i sure miss pilif's hosting. EDIT: the dogs are the biggest challenge. running by them is faster, but the problem comes in getting them all to be clustered well enough to take them all down with punches (and it looks as though i overpunch, but i dont. that last dog just needs a little extra kick). dont worry animal lovers, my girlfriend will scold me for being mean to the puppies. ;)

WiP as promised. how this works? in the new window, scroll down to see a stylizied DOWNLOAD button. click. next page, scroll down to Click Here to Start Download and... click. ive saved all of 2 and a half minutes. so at this rate (since i just did about a third - half of the game) you can expect maybe 10 seconds of improvement, depending on how flexible things become. feedback if you so choose.

im at level 11 (right after the helicopter battle) and im currently 4 minutes and 7 seconds ahead of my old time. ...this isnt really significant enough of an improvement. ive passed the 1-hour mark, and can only forsee saving maybe 6-7 minutes in total, which isnt that much.

Hi, a couple of us in the Metal Gear Speedrunning community are looking into TASing VR, though there are a few hangups. The big one is practice mode. Similar to theenglishman's Metal Gear Solid VR Missions TAS, there is a practice and time attack mode. To access Time attack mode, you must first complete all practice missions. But...since this is a gameboy cartridge, I am not sure how to properly load the SRAM in Bizhawk to start at 50% complete (all practice missions finished). Any thoughts?
