Somebody should do a CastleQuest Speed run, that would be really cool.

It definitely would be an interesting. It is quite a difficult game, and I'm sure there's some tricks and glitches that can be done. However, it'll probably take a lot of re-records since it's so bloody easy to die. Right now for tricks, I know that there is a controllable jump. That's about the only thing I know. I don't have any maps or anything, but I'm sure that there could be something on GameFAQs about which path to take to beat the game. And I'm sure we'll stumble across some glitches, too. ^_^

I don't know that we can call it "interesting". It would be an acheivement to actually see the game completed, but it would likely be a boring game to sit through. The slow speed of the character + the backtracking necessary + waiting for elevators and conveyor belts == not a good timeattack. I can say this because I've also been looking at this game for a couple weeks, trying to plan a route, and it's just a massive sack of boring.

I was going to make a thread for this but found this one. I would LOVE to see a speedrun of this. I think it would be very fun to see someone breeze through all of the puzzles and deftly avoid the enemies. There are so many rooms, and they're all quite different,
I love Crystal Mines.

Are we talking about Castlequest or Castle Quest?

I remember spending a lot of time on this back in the day, although I never ended up getting very far. I was thinking this would make an interesting movie, and it turns out that there's complete map and extensive faq/walkthrough on gamefaqs. Some interesting points about this game include starting out with 50 lives. I can definitely see "uses death as a shortcut" being taken to a whole new level. It also strikes me as a game that will take a *lot* of planning, since there are 100 rooms to consider, and the eventual movie will need to budget keys very carefully. I may take this on myself and will definitely help with the planning. To that end, I've made a couple composite pngs of all the levels, one with numbered rooms and without. For those who don't know, you start out in room 0-7 and have to rescue the princess in 7-0. There are a number of finer points, but playing the game is obviously the best way to get acquainted with them.

Surely you know this, but there is a speedrun (played on console) on Speed Demos Archive, here: http://speeddemosarchive.com/Castlequest.html I don't know if this is a good or bad run, since I haven't played the game much, but perhaps it can be of some help. If it makes a difference, I would enjoy seeing a TAS of this game! But since I won't be able to help much, let me just say good luck to whoever takes on this run! EDIT: hmm maybe I'm talking about the wrong game here, isn't Castlequest and Castle Quest two different games? Maybe I'm mixing them up. I hope we're talking about the same game here, otherwise, I'm quite ashamed :)

That's the right game, and I didn't think to look there. I was surprised enough by what was on Gamefaqs that I forgot to look for other info. That speedrun will definitely make a tas easier since a big part of the difficulty is finding a route to start with. From there, it's nothing more than optimization, shortcuts and possibly a completely different route. ;) Edit: After watching the speedrun, I doubt that a tas would improve too much. I don't mind solving puzzles, but I also want bugs and tricks that you just can't do on the console, and this game doesn't look like it has either. I'll probably abandon this game in search of buggier pastures. Perhaps this thread will be of use to someone else later.
