Hello TASvideos! This is a 100% TAS i did some time ago on Super Dram World 2. Super Dram World 2 is a Super Mario World ROM Hack with kaizo difficulty, made primarily for speedrunners. It's a hack with very creative levels and a beautiful design.

Game Objectives 🎯

  • Emulator used: lsnes rr2-ß23
  • Allow Up + Down/ Left + Right
  • Complete 100%, all exits
  • Break levels
  • Abuses programming errors

Level by Level Comments 💬

This TAS completes all Super Dram World 2 exits in the shortest possible time, abusing glitches, tricks and bugs to break some levels.

The Backtrack Trail 🟥

Using a walljump at the beginning of the level, I was able to dodge the Banzai Bill and not have to go back to kill him. Halfway through the level, using another walljump, I managed to catch a Goomba and use it to dodge the other Banzai Bill as well. At the end of the level, I was able to use the Chucks to catch a green koopa, and I used that koopa to dodge the last Banzai Bill, without having to go back.

The Collectables - Normal Exit (secret exit there's nothing to say) 🟨

I used goomba to "reduce" the size of the Pokey and go through it without having to wait. The goomba was also used as a "floor" so that I could get the correct height where the yellow pipe is. At the end of the level, I managed to maintain p speed and avoided having to walljump, right there where the Volcano Lotus plants are.

The Forced Betrayal 🟩

Using Yoshi and a trampoline, I was able to do the glitch of swallowing a trampoline in the same frame I step on it (Dinosoar) and pass the entire level over the top. Afterwards, I kept the trampoline with me to win a mushroom on the goal tape.

The Mushroom Palace 🟦

Using the mushroom I got in The Forced Betrayal, I got a cape and flew the entire level, including the second room.

Dram's Mom's House? 🟥

Nothing much here. It was only necessary to have a cape for the normal exit.

The Chase 🟨

Having the cape at this level, I managed to break it and spent the entire level flying underneath.

The Cape Escape 🟪

A flight level. I just optimized the first room as much as possible and in the second room (auto-scroll) I was able to keep my Yoshi using Perpetual Air Catch. Being with Yoshi, I didn't need to take damage to get the orb in the last room and I also kept my cape.

The Statues of Dram ⬜

I managed to break this level with Yoshi, because it was possible to walk on the black piranha plants and get p-speed to be able to fly. I flew over the level and made a corner clip to reach the goal tape.

The Skyway to Shell 🟥

With a feather in the item box, I was able to take damage on black piranha plants to get p-speed during invincibility time. With p-speed, I flew to the end of the level.

The Choice 🟩

The choice here was a Yoshi 😆

Avogrado's Constant 🟧

Starting with cape, Yoshi and a feather in the item box, I was able to go to the p-switch in this level. Using the black piranha plants, I performed a double tongue and managed to do a stun glitch in the fish, spawning a reznor and ending the level. I kept my feather in reserve, too ✔

The Brigde of Poly 🟦

I used my cape in the item box and managed to damage the black skull blocks. With that, I took advantage of the invincibility time to climb to the top of the level. I went to the halfway point, picked up speed p and flew to the end of the level. I also took a shell and took it to the goal tape as I needed a feather in the item box.

The Nightmare ⬛

I used Yoshi to be able to walk on the black piranha plants and get p-speed. I flew to Yoshi's block and duplicated the block by rotating the cape (I'm not sure why the block was duplicated, maybe because of layer 2). Mounted on 2 Yoshis, I flew to the door, took damage with the first Yoshi and entered the door in the same frame as the second Yoshi teleported to Mario's position. That way I managed to defeat big boo boss without losing Yoshi.

Dram's Bathtub 🟥

In the first room, taking damage to Chuck, I clipped the ceiling with Yoshi, doubled my feather and went to the pipe. In the second room, I clipped the floor with Yoshi, taking the throw block with me to go faster. Unfortunately I couldn't keep going all the way to the bottom of the level because the floor was solid, so I clipped the ceiling, dropped Yoshi, take p-switch and went to the goal tape.

Dram's Crib ⬜

Nothing much here. I just took advantage of the fact that I had the cape on and was able to break some rooms.

The Babysitter 🟩

Level auto-scroll. I just guaranteed that I would finish this level with the cape.

The Ultra Mega Star 🟨

One of the biggest breaks in TAS. With the cape at that level, I just flew to the goal tape. This level is quite large and without a cape the player is, most of the time, forced to wait for the platforms.

The Cetacean Cavern 🟦

The cape here was also of great help. In the first room, I took p-speed with the help of the dolphins and flew to the pipe. In the second room, also flying, I managed to dodge the floor doing a corner clip. Then I used my feather in the item box to take damage on the black piranha plants and not have to wait for the gray platform to fall. I flew to the p-switch and then I flew to the pipe.

The Adulthood ⬜

Another flight level. In the first room, I just flew to Yoshi because I needed him and went to the pipe. In the second room, I took the fire flower, took a red shell and clipped the ceiling with Yoshi. I turned the red shell into a coin and performed a item swap on chuck. The item swap gave me an orb in the item box and I finished the level right there.

Dram's Bedroom 🟥

Having a cape on this level, I flew to the boss door, skipping the second room. Boss dead, game complete!

Improvements

This is a pretty old TAS, so there are definitely improvements. I don't know if there are very big improvements, but maybe better lag handling or different strategies will save some time.

Summary

I think the most interesting thing about this TAS is the fact that it completely broke the hack. 95% of the levels were not completed as the author would like them to be. For you to have an idea, the fastest time of an RTA in this 100% category is 35:05, that is, this TAS is almost 15 minutes faster than an RTA. Very cool, no? 😆
That's it! Thanks 💌

Memory: Claiming for judging.
Memory: Cool run even if I'm not a particularly huge fan of the whole base a hack around a speedrunning personality thing. I didn't notice anything sloppy, I'm sure somebody could find something if they knew SMW ultra well but that shouldn't be the end all be all.
Accepting.
fsvgm777: Processing. Also changed the branch to "all exits" after discussing it with feos.

In general, I am against breaking hacks in this way. If a hack is completely broken by a TAS, why should I care about the hack in the first place? Besides, there aren't any glitches that aren't already in the glitchfest TAS, so nothing new there either.

I didn't feel this TAS was broken by the glitches on display in a way that felt identical to a base game run. The only exception was the stun glitch maybe but even that wasn't that bad.
[16:36:31] <Mothrayas> I have to say this argument about robot drug usage is a lot more fun than whatever else we have been doing in the past two+ hours
[16:08:10] <BenLubar> a TAS is just the limit of a segmented speedrun as the segment length approaches zero

I totally disagree, a hack should be treated as a whole game itself, and by consequence breaking it is very welcomed. This hack is very iconic in the speedrunning community, this TAS will preserve its legacy. And this is a great run, amazing use of the trick toolset available.
Games are basically math with a visual representation of this math, that's why I make the scripts, to re-see games as math. My things: YouTube, GitHub, Pastebin, Twitter

I feel breaking a hack is bad when none of the hack is on display. If one immediately ACE'd to the finish, yeah that'd be really boring. But I feel enough of the hack was on display here to make for a unique run.

I don't see any point in citing glitchfest here because hardly any TAS will make glitches that haven't already been shown in it. Even though I used glitches that are already in glitchfest, they weren't for the same purpose.
