Donkey Kong Country Returns is a side scrolling platformer that came out in 2010. Donkey Kong goes on an adventure to get his stolen Banana Hoard back from the Tiki Tak Tribe who captured it. There are 8 different worlds that Donkey Kong needs to access to progress forward and get closer to the Hoard.

Game objectives

  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Grabs keys in shop to complete less levels in certain worlds to save time
  • Emulator used: Dolphin 5.0

Comments

This run was done... on a very bad PC that would literally crash the game everytime we went to world 8. We got the help we needed from our good friend, Jaiden to assist us in finishing the game.

Other comments

If I'm being honest, this wasn never submitted before here because of... well, me thinking about certain parts of the run and how they could be optimized like at timestamp 1:12:57. It was unintended, but I thought the simplest mistakes, and sections that could be optimized weren't submission worthy. Saying this because I was thinking of my previous submissions... when now I'm realizing it was because of my game choice.
But here you go. The very first Donkey Kong country returns TAS. I apologize for the 6 month delay.

slamo: Claiming for judging.
slamo: I think the optimization is good enough overall. When I was comparing levels to the RTA record, I had some concerns at first because 1-6 is noticeably slower in the TAS. You mentioned a delayed punch on the world 7 ending as well. However, as I kept going with the comparisons, it seems your understanding of the game improved and the run maintained a good quality of optimization after that. Every run this long is going to have some mistakes in it, and the great parts of the movie are redeeming enough that I think this should be published. Accepting!

Good. For some reason, I always thought that movies wouldn't work unless the keybinds were the same.
I remember 5 years ago when I was new here, and kept PMing people thinking that was the only way to send replies in the discussion forums. Also thought my SCD++ TASes were legit. All 3 of them are flukes. I was an idiot. XD

That's good news, Wii TASes on Dolphin are easier to desync, greatest luck for it to sync.

I don't know what the game hash in the DTM is, but this movie syncs all the way through on the USA Rev 1 version, as seen on redump.

Thank you, slamo. Also, I wonder how slow is 1-6 here compared to the RTA?

It's about 1 second slower than RTA Judging from watching both the RTA and TAS side by side, the issue is you get a bunch of speed when riding down a rail, and you can preserve that through jumps. TAS doesn't do it as much so it loses time.
