KUBO 2: L'Aventurier Courageux (English - KUBO 2: The Brave Adventurer) is the sequel to the NES homebrew game KUBO. It was made in 2019 by a French child and his supportive father. It's a short platformer set in a desert in which the cowboy turtle KUBO has to find his way out and retrieve the ruby at the end.
I made this TAS because I saw MarioAtWork's TAS of the first KUBO game. Just for fun, I decided to see if there were any more KUBO games. To my amazement, there's a whole trilogy! This means I might be TASing the 3rd game, KUBO 3 sometime in the future.
OK, let's talk about the TAS itself.
Tags:
- Takes damage to save time
- Some glitch abuse
Time-saves and tricks:
- At the very beginning I go out of bounds through a dodgy part in the wall. This skips going all the way around into the cave.
- Accelerating before going past a corner is faster than hitting it.
- I delay going right for 3 frames to manipulate the ladybug to have the right movement pattern.
- After stomping the ladybug with KUBO’s unexpectedly strong boots, I delay going right for another frame to manipulate a mummy to have the right movement pattern.
- I end input early and land on the first pixel of the winning area.
I don't really have much else to say about this TAS. If there’s any blank input at the end, feel free to truncate this movie properly.
Thanks for reading and enjoy my first ever submission!
Special thanks:
- MarioAtWork for making a great TAS of the first KUBO game, which inspired me to make this.
- Zarc0nis for setting the current speedrun WR in this game, which I based this TAS off.
- Samsara for helping me learn how to use FCEUX, and for judging and improving this submission.
Me and Samsara have since beaten this record several times, lowering it down to 1577 frames. It's linked in the "Discuss and Vote" section of this submission.

Samsara: Claiming for judging.
Samsara: File replaced with a total of 52 frames of improvement. I've elected to withhold myself as coauthor.
The wholesome saga of appreciating a series of games co-developed by a small child continues, and I'm here for it! Very good for a first run, with all possible improvements having been ironed out and optimized further. Excellent work! Accepting!

User movie #638059686036572465 Took off another 30ish frames from various rooms. I also extended the ending input to end the game 1 frame sooner. Mind taking a second look at this?

saved another 4 frames from earlier input end. https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638059957795660371 for me, the goal is shortest input file that ends the game. an example of this is adelikat’s newly submitted rally bike movie, which ends input nearly a minute early but still completes the game.

1584 frames was also the best time I managed to get when I TASed this game a while ago (but never submitted). And, the userfile you've linked comes up as 1585 frames so I'm not sure if there's a blank input on the end
