emulator and rom information:

  • emulator used: FCEUX 2.6.5
  • base rom used: Punch-Out!! (U) [!].nes

About the game:

Difficult? Punch-Out!! is a rom hack of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, which was partially inspired by the Title Defense mode of Punch-Out!! for the Wii. The patch can be found here.
This hack changes every opponent's patterns and makes it so every punch you take sends you down, with the exception of Super Macho Man and Mike Tyson.

Comments:

It took a few tries to get this TAS to a point where I felt it was submission-worthy, but I finally managed to do it this time. Here are the in-game times for each fight, and the improvements over my last TAS which can be found here.
  • Glass Joe: 47.61
Slightly different order compared to my previous TAS, same time.
  • Von Kaiser: 34.61 (was 35.48)
Kaiser's get-up patern is different than the original MTPO, with one uppercut and then a jab. I originally overlooked this and stuck to a strat that was close to the original game, but I recently found this improvement. This also saves 16 frames of real time.
  • Piston Honda 1: 39.61
  • Don Flamenco 1: 14.00
  • King Hippo: 53.48
  • Great Tiger: 36.97
  • Bald Bull 1: 56.61
Same frame, different phase 3.
  • Piston Honda 2: 43.82 (was 43.97)
It turns out that ducking both jabs is faster than dodging one of them. This should have been obvious, but it wasn't for me at the time.
  • Soda Popinski: 27.97 (was 27.99)
Using a right misdirected gut punch saved a frame on this fight.
  • Bald Bull 2: 1:11.00
  • Don Flamenco 2: 54.97
  • Mr. Sandman: 2:40.48 (was 2:40.82)
I'm not exactly sure how this improvement works, but waiting for his pattern in this version is still faster in some cases.
  • Super Macho Man: 47.48 (was 48.00)
I didn't think this was possible... This improvement saves some frames in game time, but loses 16 frames of real time due to switching phase 1's ending to a gut punch.
  • Mike Tyson/Mr. Dream: 1:59.97
  • Total: 13:28.58 (was 13:30.48)

Special thanks:

Thanks go out to:
  • McHazard, for TASing the original MTPO; some of this TAS wouldn't have been as optimized without him.
  • Pap, for playing through this hack on his YouTube channel, which helped me get into it.
  • Summoningsalt, Zallard1 and Sinister1, for their tutorials and speedruns which helped me get into MTPO.
  • Wonton Supah Tavious: for pointing out improvements over one of my earlier TASes and getting me back into this hack.
  • Hexadecimal Mantis, for creating this hack.

nymx: Claiming for judging.

nymx: Replaced movie file with update against the correct patch/rom combo.
nymx: Compared against a human run and this does very well. From my account, it appears to be roughly 1 1/2 minutes faster. Good job!
Accepting.

despoa: Processing...

You got knocked down several times 14:20 and 14:45 after purely dodging for a long time. Is that really the best way of doing that fight?

The knockdowns in the Mr. Sandman fight are to get Sandman to throw his 3-uppercut move when I get up. This move allows me to deal the most damage in the shortest amount of time, which is also why this is used in the original game.

Ok I guess things are a bit different when you get knocked down in one hit regardless.

I have a problem that I'm trying to get through here. I"m performing a sync test and I cannot get past a certain point. Can you check at about 15:25? Hopefully this can be salvaged.
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX

Which rom version did you apply the patch to? The original rom I used was Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (U) (PRG1) [!].nes, but Mike Tysons Punch Out!!(Japan, USA) (Rev A).nes also syncs fine with the patch applied. Also, I patched it using the patcher that comes on Romhacking.net when logged in, don't know if that makes a difference or not.

The ROM this run syncs on after the patch is applied is Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (U) (PRG1) [!].nes (goodnes title) Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (Japan, USA) (Rev A).nes (no-intro title) But that's not the ROM the patch was made for. It was made for Punch-Out!! (U) [!].nes (goodnes title) Punch-Out!! (USA).nes (no-intro title) The hashes for the correct ROM are provided on the hack page on RHDN that you linked, as well as its no-intro filename.

Oh, I thought both were correct. I'll redo the TAS I guess.

Maybe it's possible to just resync the existing one without redoing the whole thing?

I don't think that would be very doable, since a much shorter intro means the RNG would probably be different. I'm already on Bald Bull 2, so I should be done by the end of the day.

Saved some time on Sandman, also redone on the correct rom. Could someone please update the movie in the submission?
