For most movies on this site you can either download an avi file through bittorrent or an emulator movie file. For a few movies though you don't have the option of downloading an avi file. I am assuming that this is because the author of the movie didn't submit one. If this is the only reason couldn't someone just convert all of the emulator files into avi files.
When a movie is obsoleted, the AVI is removed.
Also, some movies just don't really deserve AVIs. They might be just showing off, a demonstration of something really really cool, etc. But for the mostpart they should have them.
Can you give an example? A brief search by me came up empty handed.

DeHackEd: The Zanac run does not have an AVI, even though it's an aesthetically impressive run, like Morimoto's Gradius run.
(Actually, I haven't watched the Zanac run myself, but since it got submitted, I assume that it's an interesting watch.)

That run Genisto made.. Spy Hunter? That's a movie I'd like to see but I haven't been able to yet because I don't have the right ROM. Also Little Mermaid misses the avi-file and that's because it's just not a very great game. But I agree, it would be nice with avi's for the few missing movies.

AVI files may be missing for a number of reasons:
-The movie may have been obsoleted by a newer run.
-There may have been problems in the encoding process.
-The movie might be so long that it cannot/will not be encoded.
As a rule, though, the movie files are created for the site by Bisqwit not by the author of the run.

Well, I don't think obsoleting a published submission later on is such a bad idea... Maybe have a vote on published submissions that aren't necessarily that special in todays standards, like maybe Little Mermaid?
I mean, it feels a bit akward to have a submission published but "not worth an avi", don't you think?
I agree.
There are few movies that have been published out of compassion (and of other not-so-cool factors, such as fans loving to see the game being played), not out of any awesomeness in the performance.
It's wrong, but I don't like taking the movies out, either...
Perhaps some day.
(But not before I recreate a mechanism to obsolete movies without them being obsoleted by _something_...)
These non-obsoleted movies are currently lacking an AVI:
1) It's an extraneous movie.
2) It would create a huge AVI file.
3) The movie is not worth the AVI [of that size].
Also, there are some non-entry movies such as Jonas Stradman's SMB3 movie.
(Ps: phpBB just is ugly sometimes when it comes to preformatted text)
does the size problem still exist, now that encoders have found H264 to solve it ?
I mean, some recent movies would'nt have an avi without it, so why not older ones ?

H264 definitely creates smaller AVI files, and would probably enable reasonable encoding of Super Spy Hunter, for example.
However, the more AVIs we release and the bigger AVIs we release, the more resources it demands on the people who seed them and thus the less likely it becomes for any particular AVI to be seeded...

I wouldnt mind publishing my adventure island for example, and not making avi for it (its too big avi for the movie not being so entertaining), but again, its close to the fastest possible time for THAT game. For that matter, it would be cool to have it published, and many other runs that fit the same characteristics.
the entropy of the collection would be faster with bigger movies, but even with only small avis, it's still a matter of time.
moreover, I feel that this argument isn't quite right, as the community is now promoting RPG movies, from 1 to 2 hours or even more, and that they are encoded without any problem. so why not just a handful of old movies...

Bisqwit how do you know what the size of the avi file will be if the TAS doesn't have one. If you know the exact size of those TAS without an avi file could you please post them so that way I can see how big they would be compared to other avi files on this site.
thank you :)
will Gunstar Heroes be a piece of cake too ?

if you think it won't, then forget it, it's not very important.
