Btw, did you know that SMB3 has the same wall-jumping glitch as SMB1? I didn't know before I saw that とくしん's one-hour SMB3 run. It uses it in 3-5 (approximately at position 16:20).

Yeah, I knew that. I had already seen that video awhile ago way before you put it on your site. I don't like that video too much because he wastes too much time. He should have just beaten the game as fast as possible instead of trying to make it look more fancy. Fanciness is only ok when it doesn't cost any time.

Do you want to surpass his time? Rules: - Play all levels (don't skip levels that are not required for completition) - Get a star in all levels (don't avoid the 5-UP animation) - Expose all secret houses - Beat all on-map hammer brothers - Begin and end all levels with a small Mario - In automatically scrolling levels, do different difficult stunts in order to keep the audience entertained [edit: completition)

It was very entertaining to watch and all. There are a few things though.
Peculiar features: - All levels played (not just the required ones) - A star in all levels (doesn't try to avoid the 5-UP animation) - Flying secret houses exposed in all worlds - All on-map hammer brothers are beated - All levels begin with a small Mario, all levels end with a small Mario
He did not reveal the secret houses in all worlds and he does not defeat the hidden on-map hammer brothers in world 2 Yet very nice though.

I'm not going to do a speed run for SMB3 going through every world because it would take too long, but if I did, I wouldn't follow all those rules, since most of them are stupid, especially getting a star in every level and starting and ending every level with little Mario.

it is important to note that time was not the goal of that video. Similar to smb "crazy god technique" video, it was an aritistic or aesthetic type of time attack aimed at pure entertainment without speed restrictions; the same rules of a speed run don't really apply to these. It demonstrates what is possible and not only what is possible in the absolute fastest time. Though i question why all the secrets of the game were not exposed...

So basically whatever his goal was it wasn't a good video. Anyway, since this is the SMB3 topic, I might as well mention a really cool Game Genie code just in case anyone here doesn't know about it already. The code is KKKZSPIU. It lets you switch between the different powerups by pressing select, it also lets you start in any world by pressing up or down at the title screen, and it also does some other cool stuff. You can read more about the Game Genie code here.

Ok he reveals them _almost_ everywhere and I don't know about hidden hammer brothers.

The rock on the top right in world 2 can be hammered away to get to another part of the map where there are more hammer brothers.

I've always been amazed how complex and purposeful looking modifications can be done to a game by modifying only one or two bytes in the ROM, which is what Game Genie codes do.

Since a thread has already been started on this: The sound goes out of sync a quarter before the ending. Is this unrepairable?

Even if it isn't a "true" speedrun/time attack, I still liked it, since it has some interesting features without becoming boring at any point. Watching a kung fu time attack for example, isn't particularly entertaining, since it contains little or no tricks, whereas the full SMB3 speedrun is awe-inspiring because it is both fast and entertaining.

Only by resampling it (involves 1.2 hours of running an emulator and 3 hours of waiting for mencoder to do its job) and hoping it works better then. I didn't see a problem when I viewed the movie before publishing it... maybe I'll recheck.

You aren't allowed to request roms here. It doesn't matter if you want to receive them by accident or on purpose, a rom request is still a rom request.

download the avi file, the one that covers the whole game is pretty big but you can be patient with it.

I just hope this ACCIDENTAL madness doesn't spread.

I replaced the accidents with one single accident. Better now :)

I told Morimoto about Genisto's new SMB3j movie. Here's what he replied.
参りました。脱帽です。 全部の面が抜かれてた。自分も試したけど 出来なかったこともかなりありました。
Unfortunately I can't quite figure out what he's saying. Excite translates it like this:
It went. It is taking its hat off. All fields were extracted. Although he also tries and cooks It was not sometimes able to do considerably.
Babelfish translates it like this:
It was defeated. It is taking hat off. The all aspect has made a foolish mistake. However by your tried, considerably also comes out and has not started.
In rômaji (the latin alphabets), the text is as follows:
mairimashita. datsubou desu. zenbu no men ga nukareteta. jibun mo tameshita kedo dekinakatta koto mo kanari arimashita.
The first line is clear - Morimoto respects the new record, but the rest is unclear. Excite thinks "nukareteta" is based on the "nuku" verb (to extract) and Babelfish thinks it's "nukaru" (to make a mistake). Whichever way, the subject is even more unclear. Does anyone else here understand Japanese better? I think it says "I am defeated. I take my hat off. I did mistakes everywhere. However despite how hard it was attempted, the improvement is quite small."

This particualr feature was probably a debug mode disabled for the final release. There's a very similar debug mode in Mario Land 3 (Wario Land) for the GameBoy, and a debug mode in Rockman 5 can be accessed by changing a single byte as well (which is how the time trial competition ROM of Rockman 5 was created).

"(I have been) defeated. I take off my hat (to that person). There are mistakes in very level. I also tried, but everything I couldn't do is also all here (in this video)." Phrases in parens are understood by context ^_^
someone is out there who will like you. take off your mask so they can find you faster. I support the new Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun.

It was the first speedrun i saw, downloaded something called [SUPERPLAY]smb3 world 1-8 it opened my eyes for speedruns. now i am a collecter of them, and even if i know they are not "true" (in that fact that they are rerecorded) i think they are godly, tried some of that and found it very hard to do everything since i took 1000 tries on every hard jump and stuff. but, it's still a big source of inspiration in everyday life for me (don't think i'm all NES-geek =P ) anyway gj on this xD (drunk) btw, i have done some of the easier levels on smb3 just like those in the videos, the one where he is small nearly all the time. this was on a real nes. tell me that's cool xD

I just wanted to note that the original fmv of that movie has it called the "SUPER BAKA TECHNIQUE". In other words, the super stupid technique (Baka in Japanese = stupid, idiot)
