Super Mario Bros. 3 is the third mainline Mario game for the NES and one of the most influential platforming games in history. While Super Mario Bros. 2 started life as an thematically unrelated game before being rebranded as a Mario game, Super Mario Bros. 3 was built from the ground up to be a direct sequel to Super Mario Bros. It takes the old established formula and adds gameplay elements that would become standard in later Mario games: a overworld level select map, completely optional bonus levels, the ability to pick up and throw items, and much more.
For this run,
Brandon goes for an unusual goal of beating the game while minimizing the number of button presses as much as possible, including the directional buttons. This includes saving button presses while at the title screen.
The YouTube and downloadable encodes and the movie file all contain author's commentary in the form of soft subtitles. There is also an
alternate encode that visualizes the button presses during the run, including how long a button is pressed.
