This is an idea I've been kicking around, but I have to bone up on my SMB3 stuff before I could try it on my own (getting the emulator and rom would be smart too).
The idea is to pick up all frog suits, tanooki suits, and hammer brother suits, but otherwise finish the game ASA(F)P. It's is a unique run because:
- The suits are cool. Mario changes into a whole different outfit, and that makes these power-ups stand out more.
- It gives reason to explore areas of the game that are interesting, but pointless to straight-up speedruns. So much is being missed by going for the quickest path. Nobody would know just by watching the current speedruns of this game how cool it is.
- The suits each have their own unique powers, some of which can be fun to show-off.
- It allows the player to make use of items like the music box and cloud. Your goal isn't total speed, so you wouldn't just use the whistles, and you don't have to beat every level, so you can skip things. The limited supply of these items makes planning a path all the more interesting.
You can't really get a Frog Suit until the end of World 2, and the Tanooki and Hammer suits come later than that. What would you do in the meantime?

I too would like to see a video utilizing all the different suits, but I disagree with the idea of an all-suit run.
Though I would probably accept it if someone makes it, I don't want to encourage anyone into making it. Instead, I hope someone comes up with another idea of a SMB3 movie that introduces all the different suits in an entertaining and meaningful way.

If you do a full suit run, please kill Bowser with the hammer bros. suit.

That's why I was pushing for the "fastest in-level time" runs in the other thread. A whole new take on World 8 would be nice if Mario could handle at least one of the tank levels in a hammer bros suit bouncing around looking like a buzzy beetle and additionally using hammers to make sure not a single cannon ball gets away. After that he'd go on to finish Bowser in the hammer bros suit.
For now these are all just predictions and it's only a guess that Vatchern's run will not find any opportunity for the tanooki or hammer bros suits. If some time-saving glitches requiring the special suits are later found we might see some more variety in that movie, but for now it's uncertain.

I thought that there was some game genie code that opened some kind of programming mode where up+B changed which Mario you were - I remember it being discussed somewhere on here. I don't know if that would be allowed, but it was a neat idea.
<Swordless> Go hug a tree, you vegetarian (I bet you really are one)
KKKZSPIU? It's the select button though. The up+B thing is from Mario Adventure I think.
edit: All right! Thanks so much for pointing that out JXQ, because now I've got another idea. Instead of whining about what goals I'd like in a bunch of hour-long SMB3 runs that won't all get published because there's too many variations, let's make some good minute-long runs that accomplish that same goal and will never be published due to starting from a save-state.
I'd like you all to watch my movie (1 minute and 10 seconds) which features all the normal suits and a couple more. Below are some teaser screenshots of the the Batman suit (left) and the grey rabbit (right).
After watching, please try making your own short movie of the same type and post it here. Considering I don't manage to get a single one-up or even beat the level, I'm sure you can do better.

Turning to stone with the Tanooki suit then switching to something else will make you invincible but still able to move around; you can also kill pretty much everything with a single jump.
The most complicated thing I can think of is starting with a P-Wing, starting to fly, and selecting twice to Tanooki suit. Then while still in the air, turn to stone and select a few more times back to Raccoon Mario. Now you have an invincible Raccoon with endless flight.
Another fun thing with the code is having Kuribo's Shoe in any level. (You get it by holding A or B while hitting select.) It's fun to mess around with, such as how you can jump in midair if you walk off and edge.
I think a run where you warp to level 5 and then again to level 8 just to beat Bowswer with the Kuribo boot is worth seeing. Everyone loves the boot.
Yeah, my only problem with all these SMB3 runs is that the first two levels are always going to be identical. Even with my idea, you beat level 3 by getting a whistle, and you beat the fortress by getting a whistle, then whisk yourself away to level 2. The beginning of the movie is going to look exactly the same as the true speedrun, which we've already seen.
While thinking about it just now, I had another strange idea for SMB3. How about you get two whistles in level 1, warp to level 3 to get a frog suit, then warp back to level 1 and beat the entire game as a frog.
Eh. In the normal game you can't take Kuribo's shoe outside 5-3. If you're talking about making a cheat run using this game genie code that JXQ brought up (which allows Kuribo's shoe to be used on any level), then you don't need to get the warp whistles at all. With the code you can start immediately on World 8.
And you can't warp to World 1. If you use the warp whistle in World 2 you'll end up on the 5-6-7 path.

I concur. How fast could Bowser's Castle be beaten with the shoe? And would Mario be in the shoe in the ending "cinematic"? That would be funny.

uh... regular Mario can beat Bowser, just not very quickly.
I forgot the Kuribo boot is limited to one friggin' level (I decided not to drink before posting today).
I forget, can you shoot fireballs or throw hammers while in the shoe? If you could, you might be able to beat Bowser that way.

Yes you can, but if you're going to the extent of using a cheat code (which is of course not allowed for publishable movies) then there are plenty more interesting things to do besides hopping through Bowser's fortress only to kill him with hammers.

umm when you beat the game dont you get to keep all your items ,or am I wrong thinking that , or am I thinking of the snes version of the game , but if so you could be able to start level 1 with a frog suit , I thinkthat wouldbe cool watching a run that only had a frog suit , just my oppinion
If you choose New Game+ I think you keep all your experience but lose most of your items. Oh, wait...
On topic: you can't beat the last fortress with frog suit cause it can't duck. Which really pissed me off when I was a kid. I had a frivolous childhood.
PhunqSauce is correct - you get an inventory full of P-Wings.
Which, I suppose, is a good way to get you to use all those P-Wings that you refused to use on the off-chance that you really needed them later (just like the one-shot bomb attacks / elixirs from RPGs).
