I think the block just falls down so suddenly that it always overlaps you and pushes you through.

My intuition tells me that the "warp" is just a result of hitting the P-switch from underneath. Since the block is being passed through, Mario hits the P-switch and for some reason is placed on top of it. Either way, it's neat to see.

That's weird that it won't work there...that throws off my theory too.

Doesn't the Air movie use a similar trick to get through a plain brick block?

Yes, it is very much similar.

I used the A turbo button both times. If you watch the second GIF you can clearly see that I hit some sort of invisible roof on the second jump. It might be useful for an "Air"-type hack...

I think it's pretty clear: He hits the "P" block from below just like you can hit mushrooms and fireflowers, except that the "P" block pushes you up a little, enough to go through the block.

So the P block wants you on top of it?

I would like to see you go to stage 5-3 as small Mario, do the power-up-and-die trick there, then complete that stage when you reenter it. With all the glitches you're demonstrating, I was surprised you left that out. Also, try to complete one of the mini-fortresses, stepping left and right above or beneath a Boo Diddly to show it screwing up. I'd like to see that, too. Oh, and one more idea, I don;t know how far you got in World 6, but maybe you could do the stage right after the second mini-fortress with a P-Wing and fly under it. Few people seem to know about that.

That pipe glitch is used on the "no flutes" run of smb3.

I'm not sure about the NES version... But in the SNES version you can go down (and up) a pipe from the side of it. That would save some frames at each pipe really. I presume this is a known thing, but at it isn't used in the run I had to ask...

I'm trying to make a warps-using TAS of this game. I think I can make some general improvements to it. However, one thing confuses me. How does the trick in 1-3 work where he wobble back and forth? What does the input look like? (I.E. hold B, otherwise have >____<<<<<>____<<<<<)

Can't you just look at the .fcm in frame advance with "input display" turned on? To get a better overall view of the input, you could open the .fcm in Maximus' TAS movie editor. It looks to me like he first presses left to start turning, and right as he is about to face left, he stops it by pressing right, and so on... And as far as I know, that wobbling trick is just for entertainment value, since he has to wait to get behind the white block, so you could also do something unique during that time. ;) Please, please, please post WIPs if you manage to beat any of his times. I'm sure I speak for everyone here when I say that I'm more than interested if Genisto's masterwork can be beaten.

That direction changing is directly related to getting P-speed by the end of the first pipe. It's a huge pain, and I've yet to find any useful memory locations relating to how much speed is charged up.

I know the first level in a warpless run can be improved by one frame but that has setbacks due to the hammer bro, the only level I can envision being improved is the castle level in world 8, if that walking through walls glitch could work with the invisible coin block, I tried doing that for a good hour or so but gave up in the end.

I found an odd glitch letting you go through walls at top speed. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to replicate it. I'll try again and tell you if it works. I still don't know how it works, but it seems promising.

That would be quite revolutionary at this point (seeing the age of the game...). You didn't happen to record it or anything?

You can go full speed through one block by falling onto it at the right angle. Since there are no blocks after it, speed isn't reduced. Maybe this is what you did?
