Same way as in SMB1 and SMB2j. Please read previous posts (use Search) - it has been explained many times before.

I had a trip down amnesia lane today, watching the first time-attack video I ever saw again. However, when I was searching for it, I found a serious overabundance of message boards downplaying the hype with claims of video editing (ironic that everyone was searching for any sign of cheating considering the nature of the video). I had almost forgotten how controversial this was when it first came out. But my question is, was the video actually edited at all, or was it just a normal time-attack like the hundreds here?

To the best of my knowledge it had not been edited in any other means than what is provided by Famtasia - that is, rerecording.

Nah. People saw all kinds of things which they thought were proof of video editing, but they were mistaken, or didn't know how the engine worked. You can still download the Famtasia file from Morimoto's homepage: http://homepage3.nifty.com/soramimi/zips/movsmb3.zip I haven't checked, but I'm pretty sure it plays the exact same way as the videofile that circulated. Unless he updated it.

He took the title screen out of the wmv file and had it start on the map, and he also put a screen at the beginning that said "super mario bross3 time attack video", and a screen at the end that said his name and his two websites, but other than that, what you see in the video is the same as what you'll see if you play the fmv file. The people who said stuff like "it's video edited because the timer stopped and Mario went through a wall" just don't know anything about SMB3.

Don't forget the "he goes right through the wrench; it's edited" claim.

I've also seen it claimed that it must be fake because he starts a level out invincible but never gets a star item anywhere, although if you pay attention he gets it from the miniboss in one of the ship levels. And questions about why Mario starts glowing orange... I had a question though: Are there significant differences between the US and Japanese versions of the game?

the "zoom" efffect of when you enter a level is different (one of them doesnt have the fadeout or soemthing so its a bit faster), and when you get hit on the J version you get to little mario size no matter what the powerup was, unlike the US version.

My friend said that you can't reach world 8 by blowing 2 whistles in a row (to which we broke out an NES and proved him wrong), and also swore that the video was sped up, and the music edited to sound normal.... that would probably be more work then the actual tool assisted run was.

I'm totally amazed that those "discussions" still go on... (or rather, stomp still) http://keithdevens.com/weblog/archive/2003/Nov/26/SuperMarioBrothers3

Many people are willing to see tampering and fakery in the video (and I'm talking here about claims that the video has been literally faked with image manipulation and video programs, not that it just has been created with an emulator instead of having been played like the real thing in realtime) and many people are eager to believe that in the same way as they are willing to believe any cheap conspiracy theory out there, and this regardless of hard proof of the contrary. It all is a question of laziness. Anyone could take the emulator, see how the replaying works (by eg. studying the fmv file format), take the unmodified original game rom and then replay the fmv and see that there's no fakery: It really is the original game being played genuinely (in the sense that the emulator is only reading key presses from the file but otherwise emulating the game exactly as it should). However, this is of course too much trouble for most doubters to do, even if they are told they can do it. They will just be too lazy to actually check the proof and dismiss it as irrelevant. This is how all conspiracy theories and hoax claims work: Make claims that sound believable to people who don't know how the thing works and hope that nobody will actually check the facts for themselves. Just look at the moon hoax theories: People are willing to believe the most ridiculous "signs of fakery" in photographs without actually verifying any of them (or even wanting to think logically about it, which all by itself would dismiss more than half of the "proofs" of image tampering).

i have finished level 1-3 and am doing the small fortress. i need to get it faster in order to get the hammer bro movement correctly. i dont kill a red winged goomba at 1-2. reason is that way i didnt get 2 repeated frames of lag (when you kill an enemy an extra 100 points sprite appears on screen, on that case it lagged). by not lagging 2 frames i could get a flower at the end of level. that way i wont have to worry later in 8-1 to not get a star, so i will have freedom to go as fast as possible there, instead of waiting. never mind the end of fortress, i havent worked on that yet. comments plz :) http://www.angelfire.com/ex/uobt/smario3j-foda-v2.zip

In 1-3, I doubted two things. - Getting the mushroom - Starting the waiting at the white block In both cases, it looked like the jump curve could have been flatter... But I'm quite sure this was just an illusion, because I trust your ability.

yea it was frame perfect under the conditions. about the mushroom i jumped as late as possible on the goomba, and then made the frame adjustment to get the mushroom at the earliest frame. on the white block, i had in mind that it only mattered the frame i touch the turtle and the frame i start holding left so i wouldnt fall. but i see what you mean, i will test if i can touch the turtle a bit more lower so i can touch the white block sooner. thanx for pointing that out. Hammer bros suit run? julianch the hammer brothers move on the map sometimes they move 1 square, sometimes 2 or more, its desired to get them to move only 1 square always no matter what

No, you can't get the Hammer Brothers Suit for quite a while. I don't know what a "run" with it would entail.

You should test out getting the mushroom in level 1 and the leaf in level 3 and see if you can get it to be faster that way.

you could do a hammer bros. suit run if you play the SNES version, since it saves your inventory if you choose to start from world 1.

Would that be legitimate?
