The fcm ended in the middle of 1-2. When you tried level 3 with that strategy, did you hit the turtle on the white block with the tail rather than jumping on it?

oh thats it! thanx man that will help a lot :) it might be faster with that! tested, it is faster doing it michael fried's way :) much faster Edit: redownload v3. it finishes first fortress 3 seconds ahead. its sloppy, i will remake a lot of it but u get the idea, i cant get p-speed on the fortress untill its desired because if i get p-speed too early it will end too early and i wont have p-speed at the place i want it.

FCEU does not seem to be working properly on this old computer I'm at now, so I haven't seen your progress, but I'd just like to say that personally, I would prefer if you either got as many lives as possible before completing the game (as in not stopping at 99, because the life counter happens to), or as many points as possible. Maybe that feels sort of stupid, since excess lives wouldn't be available or seen on the screen, but I think it would be interesting to see you attempt to go all-out in one category besides speed. Why didn't you jump on the turtle at the end of level 1? Does that cause extra lag? Edit: 286 is possible in level 3.

Ending the level with 286 timeunits remaining. You lost 1 timeunit.

What did you do in level 3? Why didn't your stopping-the-ducking reset the timer that enables to go through the white block? When I tried it, breaks were not allowed in it. Also, why exactly does the P speed stop when you take the leaf?

I never stopped holding down. mario got up because i was holding down + left or right on some frames, so you dont need to be ducking, just holding down for the set number of frames needed is enough (exactly 240 frames, that is 4 seconds) When you dont have the leaf and you have P-speed you can maintain p-speed by jumping even if you stop moving horizontally at max speed. But when you have the leaf, the jump stops horizontal acceleration in the air, you start to fly at the horizontal speed you currently are when starting the jump. So, i cant jump to maintain p-speed when i have the leaf. Another issue about p-speed and flying is that if you get p-speed and then jump at max horizontal speed, then touch the ground and keep running without losing the p-speed, he wont open his arms again to be able to fly, you need to slow down from p-speed, and then gain all of p-speed again so the flying can work. Thats why at the fortress i waited untill the right moment to get p-speed because i still had a small jump to make before i could do the jump to start flying to the exit.

I see. I tried maintaining the P-Speed, but in doing so I reached the white block 30 frames slower than you (because the initial jumps start slower). https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/smb3j-leaf-test.fcm - FCM here.

I just tried out level 1 and I finished with 16 coins and was still able to jump on the turtle at the end, though the extra coin I got magically didn't give me any points for some reason so I ended up with only 100 more points than you at the end. Here's the fmv: http://s6.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=08PDEZSF82M060RWUZEN7E0NIZ If by some chance I don't get bored soon I'll continue on to the end of world 1. Btw, I forgot to mention that the fortress can be completed at 291.

bisqwit already did fortress 14 frames faster than i did, that was just a test run. i havent even tested if mushroom in 1-2 can be taken, thats why i didnt try anything on level 1-1 yet

Please use FCEU instead if possible.

True because internal clock speed seems higher in Famtasia because there's some place where it doesn't lag and where FCEU does in this game. I recommend people to no longer use that emulator anymore. Between FCEU and Famtasia, guess who emulates the REAL NES better?

But Famtasia is closer to the right speed if you set it to 104%!

Please use FCEU instead if possible. Why does it matter? I doubt I'll end up going farther than world 1, and even if by some chance I do decide to do a whole run, can't you just convert it to fcm format? I like Famtasia better.

We can't easily convert it to FCEU because Famtasia doesn't emulate games similar. In fact, it emulates games the wrong way compared to FCEU.

I got mushroom at 1-2 instead of 1-1 and both routes seem to use same exact amount of frames at end of 1-2 apperently (mushroom in 1-1 vs mushroom in 1-2). On not very optimized runs... that is bad, i will have to optimize BOTH routes to know which is faster. but getting muhsroom in 1-1 makes a nicer move, gets +300 points + 1 coin and kills +2 turtles.

I am so stupid, i dont know where i saw 3 seconds improvement... :S i have just finished optimizing the 1-1 mushroom route and it turns out to be slower!..................................... oh well that ends today's work on mario 3 in a ridiculous way... *sigh* i will get back to mushroom on 1-3 route....

Can you post the fcm of the optimized 1-1 mushroom route?

Maybe you can save a little more time in the fortress by not making such a big jump from the platform under the flower so you can start running sooner, and then duck as you fall off the ledge so you don't hit the block.

ok i will try, but i think he will hit the top block anyway. i still might be able to optimize it by getting into P-speed and then finding the exact number of frames AFTER p-speed that if i release either B or RIGHT the p-speed will be cancelled. that way i can keep a higher speed running. this route is slower than the "normal" route by only half second, so those things may or may not validate this route as the best.

If you still hit the block then you could press left for a few frames while you're falling, I'm pretty sure that would be faster than making the big jump.

at end of world 1 i'm 38 frames ahead of genisto's movie. used the 1-1 mushroom new route. movie file is updated for download, i make a mistake after using the flutes which i will correct later. (i was 12 frames too slow)
