Game objectives

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 2.9.1
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes a lot of intentional damage to save time
  • Gets a lower score to save time

Game mechanics

  • A to jump, U + A to jump higher
  • L/R to move
  • B to atack, you can only attack when standing still for a few frames
  • D to crouch, L/R while crouched to walk while crouched, crouching isn't used ever in the TAS
  • You die instantly if you fall from too high

Tech and glitches

  • The attack animation can be cancelled early by walking
  • L + R keeps you walking in place, this can be used on moving platforms to get a slightly longer jump than if you where standing still, its also used to just wait, instead of just standing still
  • In the Underground Caverns level there's some hooks you can hang and jump off, jumping on these is faster than walking
  • In one spot I was able to clip into the floor, it only ever happened there tho, the clip happens on Underground Caverns 3
  • You can get a useless softlock if you land on the edge of some platforms while holding L + R and A

Comments

The main strategy on the TAS to save time is damaging through hazards, you can only take damage 4 times before dying, tho in some levels there's health pick ups, you refill your health between screens. Between levels, there's a score screen that counts down each point individually, so it's important to minimize the score gain when possible, you gain score by killing enemies and collecting crystals and gold bars.

Notes

In this game the credits don't scroll automatically, I wasn't sure if I could just end input when dealing the final hit to the boss or after the final score screen so I make the credits scroll manually just in case.

Possible Improvements

The vine cycle in The Wilderness 2 is extremely close to being possible, by just a few frames, so any kind of new tech there could save a few seconds.
Researching further the clip glitch could be useful, if it can be done anywhere else.

Thanks to

  • WhiteHat94 for his RTA run, wich I used as a basic template to build uppon

nymx: During the first part of this run, you must have been extremely frustrated that you couldn't get ahead of the best speed-runs that I could find. During my analysis, I used to compare your TAS against. For the first 4+ minutes, I saw how you would get ahead and then get synced back up with the human run. This only happened because of the globally timer that the "Swing Ropes" ran on. This is unfortunate, but everything is ok. Later on, you finally caught a break and started accelerating past the human effort. Once that occurred, it was no looking back. I see that this is a really well done run and I enjoyed watching a lot. Thanks.
It regards to your time...it is also unfortunate that the game takes a while to get started. From my account, your TAS is about 36 seconds faster than any human efforts. Great job.
Accepting.

Could the file be changed to this one? I missed that you could skip the startup screens early, other than that its the same. https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638383220323738039 I was made aware by WhiteHat94 that you can actually make the jump at the end of Volcano 4, so you don't need to wait for the flame cycle. For some reason every time I tried improving that level that jump was impossible in my head. Here's the new file. https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638383507847286723 Technickle mentioned I could skip the startup screens even sooner, so here's a file that does that. It messed up the input polling timing or something, so to make it sync I had to add a frame before entering The Wilderness, and remove one frame off The Wilderness 2, it synced fine after that. https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638384031395926722 If I missed anything else please let me know.

Nice run! Movement seems very optmized. Would be nice finding a way to preserve the greater speed from hooks and slopes.
Games are basically math with a visual representation of this math, that's why I make the scripts, to re-see games as math. My things: YouTube, GitHub, Pastebin, Twitter
