Supertank (Compute's Gazette)

In this unusual action game, your goal is to prevent hostile tanks from crossing into your territory. By aiming carefully and avoiding direct hits, you may make it to the rank of Marshall.
The article for this game can be found on page 64 of Compute's Gazette Issue 17 (November 1984)

Why TAS This Game?

The continuation of TASing games from my all-time favorite magazine, Compute's Gazette. This makes my 97th TAS from this series.
Seeing the cover of this magazine brings back a giddy feeling! At the time, I only had my Commodore Vic-20, and was very interested in the game "Bagdad". I always wondered what the C64 games would have looked like; however, I had no way of knowing that my C64 was on its way for Christmas! In regards to this specific game though, I had no memory it, since I wasn't able to play it at the time. It would be about a year later, after I typed other games in on my C64, that I would get to this game.

Game Difficulty and Ending

Difficulty in this game is based on the type of tank you choose. I choose the "Sherman", since it was the faster moving and shooting tank. Its armour is the weakest of the bunch, but it doesn't matter...this is a TAS!
There is no ending...so I go for the top rank of Marshall, which is achieved by obtaining a score of over 1000 points.

Effort In TASing (Not BOTed)

This was a straight forward game to TAS. The only problem I had, was having the motivation to go through 101 shots to get to rank of Marshall...this highest the game has to offer.

Human Comparison

This video may be for the Commodore Vic-20, but it plays the same as the C64 version. The game is the 4th presented game at time 5:03.

DrD2k9: Claiming for judging.
DrD2k9: Endpoint choice seems valid. Accepting.

despoa: Processing...

I was curious why the final score of 1048 was reached, or 1010 before bonus. It turns out that the score used for rank calculation is BEFORE the addition of bonus, and the actual condition to attain "** MARSHAL **" rank is SC > 1001. I think maybe the BONUS is approximately the non-lag-frame count divided by 20 (a number has .5 added each time through the main control loop, and then it's divided by 10 & rounded down to give the bonus number) so there's no way here to improve BONUS without compromising on last input frame.

I was a bit confused as well. When I first reached 1000, I thought I had it. It ended up being 1010 that was needed to get that rank. Oh well...
I recently discovered that if you haven't reached a level of frustration with TASing any game, then you haven't done your due diligence. ---- SOYZA: Are you playing a game? NYMX: I'm not playing a game, I'm TASing. SOYZA: Oh...so its not a game...Its for real? ---- Anybody got a Quantum computer I can borrow for 20 minutes? Nevermind...eien's 64 core machine will do. :) ---- BOTing will be the end of all games. --NYMX

Yeah...I always laugh at things like that. It seems that they want to throw every trick they know, to show what kind of programmer they are.
