How about another glitchfest?

Well, this is a nearly 4 hour long Resident Evil 4 glitchfest. Given the amount of glitches that were made in this TAS, I think I can call it a glitchfest, but playaround is also fine.
This TAS was made in new game plus (because obviously, starting with all weapons greatly increases the possibility of glitches), from a new round save and here we get into a small problem (or a big one, maybe). I wasn't aware that for TASes that start on a SRAM save, a verification movie was required (my mistake here, there's no excuse and I didn't look at the rules for that). Because of that, I ended up doing the entire TAS on top of a save I downloaded from the internet lol. I just wanted a save with everything unlocked to start TAS. So, as you noticed, I don't have a verification movie of the save that was used.
Okay, but why am I submitting this TAS here, even though I don't have a save verification movie? For two reasons:
  • This TAS is a glitchfest. So, in my opinion, a verification movie wouldn't be that necessary, since I'm not competing for time with anyone. The save that was used doesn't matter that much, since TAS is 100% based on messing around and doing as many glitches as possible.
  • A save verification movie for a game like Resident Evil 4 would be extremely tedious and insanely long, since unlocking everything involves beating the game several times (to unlock the extras and then to leave a "new round" save with the weapons I wanted), beating Separate Ways (to unlock Chicago) and still getting 5 stars in all the Mercenaries scenarios, with all the characters (to unlock Handcannon). We're talking about a movie of more than 15 hours, maybe.
So, these are the reasons that made me submit this TAS here, even though I don't have a verification movie. But of course, if these reasons are not valid, so be it. I just won't miss the opportunity to submit a TAS that, in my opinion, would be nice to have on the site.

About the TAS:

Unfortunately, I can't explain everything that happened in this video, because it's almost 4 hours long, so there would be 3 pages of explanations here lol.
What I can say is that, surprisingly enough, this TAS doesn't even come close to fixing all the glitches in the game. I discovered, after finishing TAS, that I could have done a lot more, but it was too late. However, maybe TAS would be a lot longer than it is if I included all the glitches I discovered... so it wasn't so bad.
And in case you have any doubts, the save does not interfere in any way with the TAS. Of course, if you notice, Leon starts the game with a few hundred million pesetas, but, as already said, this has no influence whatsoever, since this TAS is a glitchfest. All glitches made are possible in the normal game, regardless of the save that was loaded.
Another pertinent question: Why wasn't this TAS done in a professional mode? Well, since it's a glitchfest, I guess the difficulty level doesn't matter. But I didn't really do it on pro mode because I would have to start a new game on pro, then beat it a few more times until I got the weapons I wanted. It would take too long and be kind of tedious. Because of that, I ended up using a save on normal mode.
NOTE: The save I downloaded from the internet was just a save with everything unlocked. The save in which TAS is played was made and organized by me.

Glitches

Many glitches have occurred in this TAS, but few have any documentation. I will comment here on some that were frequent.
  • When Leon jumps, whether it's from a fence or from a high place, he lands on the ground. However, at some points in the game, if you're in a specific position and jump, Leon ends up landing inside an object or even inside the ground. This causes him to lose collision with the ground and walls and allows you to exit the map. This glitch occurs in several parts of the game, in several different ways, but the way it works is the same. See examples here and here.
  • Still on the glitch above, if Leon jumps much further than he should, he ends up losing all collision with the ground and falling forever. See at minute 30:40 and 3:19:24.
  • For some reason, the game developers sped up Leon's animation aiming the Striker. As a result, if you aim the Striker and before the crosshair appears, you enter the briefcase and equip another weapon, Leon will accelerate, almost twice as fast. This is a very famous glitch called "Ditman Glitch", used a lot in speedruns and also a lot in this TAS because it causes other glitches.
  • Apparently, if you dodge a ganado's attack while the Ditman glitch is activated, you can stab objects or ganados from a distance. You'll see this on the farm, when I destroyed a crate from a distance (more specifically at minute 8:03 of my encode) and also in the castle, in the part with the cultists with RPG, when I stabbed the cultists from a distance (minute 1:13:04). I'm not sure how this glitch works, much less why it occurs.
  • When Leon is grabbed, takes damage from a ganado, does a jump animation or a kick animation, at the same time as a grenade or an RPG explodes, he does not take damage from the explosion.
  • When there is a narrow corner with a door and that door is opened, with Leon in the corner, he ends up inside the door and the enemies get confused. You will see this in the part before Bitorez's house, minute 15:19 and also in the gates with regenerators, minute 2:57:46.
  • When Leon is crouched (like in the part of the war where you can crouch in the bags), if you aim, Leon will stand up. However, if you stand up, aim, enter the briefcase and equip another weapon, Leon will exit the crouching animation, but the game will understand that he is still crouched. By doing this, you can crouch anywhere, just by pressing the aim button. This happens at 13:45 and can only be done on GameCube (as far as I remember). See here.
  • Leon can shoot through doors with the TMP+ stock. This only works on the GameCube. See here.
  • In mine carts, it is possible to jump out of the cart by standing in a specific position. With Ditman glitch activated, it is possible to do so without even activating the cart, see here.
  • When equipped with Infinite Rocket Launcher, if you aim with the knife and while aiming, take any attack or damage, Leon will bug and hold the RPG in the middle of his body lol. This is just a graphical glitch, nothing major happens.
  • When Leon aims, whether with a knife or a gun, Ashley stays behind him. If you do this near a wall, Ashley ends up going inside the wall. If you do this on the edge of a floor, she loses her collision with the floor. By throwing eggs, you can make her float in the air. This happens at 1:25:44.
  • It is possible to suplex with Ashley, by crouching the cultists with the door (see here. If I remember correctly, this only works on the GameCube (maybe on the wii too).
  • The loading animation of some weapons is completely bugged when Leon has Ditman glitch activated. The wooden rifle is a good example of this and you will see at 3:35:40.
  • On levers, Leon takes no damage while exiting or entering the spin animation. This makes him invincible to attacks or fireballs. If you enter or exit the animation too quickly, Leon gets glitched, like at minute 56:30. Another example of this glitch is at 1:02:25.
  • In the part where Leon is caged with the Garrador, in the castle, when you kill all the cultists, some start jumping from the ceiling. However, if you have an infinite rocket launcher and kill the cultists on the ceiling before they jump to the ground, a glitch occurs. New cultists are born, but they are invisible. They stay on the ceiling and after a while they jump down, but are still invisible. I don't have a good explanation for this glitch, just see here.
  • Equipping the automatic rifle, at the shooting range, when talking to the merchant and choosing a range mode, the weapons are changed. But, if you cancel, when you return to the rifle, it will be out of bullets. I haven't tested if it works with other weapons. See at 1:47:49.
  • In the 2 El Gigantes it is possible to go out of the map with Ditman glitch like this. Outside the map, you can go ahead to the door that leads to the Novistadores' cave. However, if you do this and return to the room with the 2 El Gigantes, they will be spawned without the cutscene having been activated. If you damage one of them and do the animation of going up with the knife, the cutscene will play and Leon will have the knife in his hand, no matter what happens. See the whole process here.
There were many other glitches in this TAS, but if I were to explain them all, I would be here until tomorrow. If I remember any other important glitch, I will add it here.

If TAS is accepted, here are the instructions:

  • Download this file;
  • If there is, delete the "GC" folder in the "Dolphin Emulator" directory (to access this directory, just open emulator home page ► file ► open user folder)
  • Open Resident Evil 4 (Disc 1).iso in the emulator and the game will ask you to create a memory card A, press yes;
  • On the emulator's home page, right-click on Resident Evil 4 (Disc 1) and go to "Open GameCube Save Folder" or go to the "GC ► USA ► Card A" folder directly through the directory mentioned above.
  • Once in the "Card A" folder, extract the downloaded files (there are two .gci files) and paste them into this folder, replacing the .gci file that the game created.
  • Once the two .gci files that were downloaded are in the "Card A" folder, just go to the emulator and play the movie.
I don't think I forgot to mention anything here. If I did, I'll come back and add it to this submission. Thanks to everyone who's going to watch and have fun :)

Not so glitch-intense, although here I saw some I've never seen before. Still it looks more like a playaround or having fun in the game using TAS. Well, Yes vote! Why not?
TASing is like making a film: only the best takes are shown in the final movie.

Personally I find the usage of an encode with interpolated frames extremely disorienting and had to drop the quality to 480p30 in order to watch it back properly (if I didn't want to watch it back via Dolphin, cause I didn't want to load Dolphin). Can you please provide at the very least an alternative encode that doesn't have this as an unlisted video. Anyways... The TAS itself is enjoyable, with many glitches that were showcased... However it is long, so dunno how many people would turn off from this. It would also help to have an explanation on what's being done to clue in the people that aren't as knowledgeable on the series. Obviously the only way to "improve" on this is to showcase more of how the game is busted, but clocking in at almost 4 hours, this has done plenty. Yes Vote. What would be nice now is to see the original 2013 TAS get improved upon, something that arandomgameTASer was initially working on, but has appeared to stopped showcasing progress on.

Yeah, this frame interpolation happened by accident. I put a filter on the video and later discovered that it affected the black screens and the dynamics of the video. I didn't change it because the video is too long and takes too long to export. Maybe I can record it again, but in a lower resolution.

Now I'm really curious about the save file format lol. What's stored in it? How much can you modify for this run to still work? I feel that's more productive in the discussion, rather than talking about rules. Hell, it might even unlock new insights if some corruption bug was ever found. Also given that it's dolphin, I'm not even sure if a 15 hour run would even sync at all for verification purposes. Ouch. I wished the submission notes would elaborate more on what's in the run. This is an almost 4 hour run, with nothing in the notes to even describe the glitches. That's not very approachable for people who aren't familiar with the game, nor it's mechanics.

I haven't tested it, but any small change in the save would probably desync the entire TAS, especially since it's 4 hours long. And about the glitches, I'll try to do something, but I still wouldn't be able to explain much. Most of the glitches are generated by Leon jumping in places he shouldn't have. And besides that, a lot of things happened that I can't even explain lol

I don't remember much of this game so some notes about gameplay and glitches used would be great. Some time stamps would also be helpful since 4 hours is a really long commitment for a single submission.

So according to someone that tried to sync this it is desyncing around 3:33:10 in the author's encode. Is there perhaps any other changes that might help sync this?

Weird. Everything that needs to be done is in the instructions I gave. It's strange to run almost the entire TAS and desync at the end. I really don't know what this desync could be.

Would it be possible for you to tell us your PC specs? There have previously been cases where the brand of graphics card used can affect sync.

Hm, I also have an Nvidia graphics card. I'll make another attempt at syncing later this week.

Could the issue be an SRAM.raw file? Not sure if that got changed in dolphin in the past 10 years or so

I thought about making the SRAM.raw available as well, but I realized that it wouldn't change much, since if you delete the "GC" folder and enter the game to create a memory card, the game itself creates the SRAM.raw. Although I didn't start the movie with a completely clean SRAM, the movie syncs from beginning to end here on my computer, even after deleting it and letting the game create a new SRAM.raw.
