Well, thought it'd be time to make this topic. Ufouria is one of my favourite games of all time, it's a Metroid-like adventure game. It was never released in America. I did a speedrun of it a few months ago, a speedrun which I plan to improve... I also plan to do a 100% run of it. But let's put that aside for now. The first speedrun of it I tried to do was a low item run, only collecting the six items that's absolutely neccesary to clear the game, but the low amount of health I usually ended up with at the final boss I didn't like. I kept dying, so I did a pure speed instead, collecting some health-restoring items. So, I'm planning to make a low item TAS. There isn't anything called "take damage to save time" in this game (except for possibly at the underwater boss. But you need lots of health for it to pay off, and I'll probably see if there's some other fast strategy. The only not getting hit strategy I could do on console consisted of circling around the room, and the underwater controls are not too friendly), since there's a taking damage animation that lasts for a few seconds in which you have no control of your character whatsoever. Only place I took damage on purpose in my speedrun, not counting underwater boss, was in a place that I know CAN be cleared without taking damage, but I doubt I'll ever pull that off on real console. So I should be able to clear it easily with slowdown and stuff. But, before I can really start to make this there's a small question that has been nagging me... I downloaded the appropriate version of FCEU, but there's one function I can't understand how it's supposed to work. Frame advance. In this game you have a total of four (you have to find three of them) characters to use. To switch between these characters you need to enter the sub-screen. So to be able to switch characters as efficiently as possible, I'd clearly have to use frame advance. But how the hell am I supposed to do? Pause the emulation and advance one frame at a time with another button. But the emulator does not take any input because it's paused? What am I not understanding here?

You hold the input while pressing the frame advance key.

... If you excuse me, I'll go hide in a corner now. I never even thought of the solution being that simple.

You should check this topic out. Blublu apparently found a way to skip shades altogether, so you should probably PM him about that or something.

Nah, that only works if you turn off PAL emulation or something like that. If you run the game the way it is supposed to, you fall precisely one pixel short (my estemate). It isn't possible on the Japanese version either. Still, I think it's worth trying to find some glitches of some kind. For example, if it's possible to walljump in this game, it would be very easy to skip both Shades and Freeon-Leeon (or whatever he's called).

Yeah, you said that in my topic about my speedrun over at SDA... but I'm going to do this with PAL emulation, since that's the way I'm used to playing this game. So no skipping Shades. Shades is completely neccesary in a low item run (no medicine) anyway, since it's just IMPOSSIBLE to get past the lava pits otherwise, since I'm skipping Freeon-Leeons secet weapon. Haha, I didn't know someone had attempted it before... The only speed trick worth talking about I found for my run was to keep a constant speed when walking on ice with Freeon-Leeon, using a small controller glitch to not slow down when jumping. I will try to look around for some glitches, but I doubt it... well, I managed to get Gil stuck in a wall once (solid wall, not breakable blocks, those are easy to get stuck in), but that didn't do anything else than... well, stick him into a wall. I haven't been able to reproduce it, but I don't think there's any use for it anyway...

It's easy to get past the lava pits without any medicine. All you need to do is jump on top of one or two enemies, and get hurt on the third (or maybe the second, I forget), and you use the temporary invincibility to get the rest of the way across without getting hurt by the lava. You don't need a whole lot of energy for this, you could probably collect it from enemies without losing too much time overall. Certainly it would take less time than getting Shades (if he were possible to skip).

I was planning to not collect any extra health. Just takes time to wait around after killing an enemy. I know it's possible to bounce over the second lava pit with Shades, it just requires perfection.
