This topic will be just like the SMB3 speed competition, but SMB3 was getting kind of boring since there wasn't enough competition, and since there's a Yoshi's Island speed run on SDA now, at least I'll have something to try to beat. Here are the rules for this speed competition: 1. In this topic, we will compete to see who can complete each level in the fastest time. 2. We will keep track of both fastest times and fastest 100% times (getting the maximum number of points). 3. You may use a real SNES, or you may use an emulator as long as you do not use save states or slow motion during the level. However, you may save before you start the level and load when you mess up to start the entire level over again. 4. Time the level from when you get control to when you lose control. 5. Start with 0 eggs and do not use items. 6. Times for autoscrolling levels will not be kept track of (you can post times for these levels if you want to, but I don't see any point). 7. Hurry up and beat the times in those videos at SDA to show who really has the skill. Edit: I just remembered that the videos at SDA are 100% runs, so we'll have to have two categories for competition, fastest time and fastest 100% time. I made the appropriate changes to the rules. Here are my best times so far: Fastest level times: 1-1: 0:29 1-2: 1:00 1-3: 0:43 1-4: 1:50 1-6: 0:59 1-7: 0:34 Fastest 100% completion level times: No times yet.

The night of a thousand edits. Edit: Simple - The IRC chat has a bot thing that informs folks of thread updates *nod* And there's been a ton from you on this. o.o It's pretty quiet in the chat tonight, so there's basically been a buncha the following: <NesVideoAgent> Post edited by Michael Fried (Yoshi's Island speed competition): http://tasvideos.org/forum/p/4322 (Yoshi''s Island speed competition) @@

That's because I keep beating my times so I have to change them. By the way, how do you tell how many times I edit my posts? Please respond by editting your post to reduce the number of off topic posts since this is supposed to be about the Yoshi's Island speed competition.

He knows that because it says in the post how many times it has been edited. Last edited by Michael Fried on 2004-05-21 03:53:58; edited 6 times in total <- this line.

I practiced 1-4 some more and managed to tie your time. It's pretty good, but I think I can shave off another second or two if I time the shots at the boss a little better.

I just did a very fast 1-4 run, but the zmv was broken so I couldn't time it, but it was probably faster than 1:52. Edit: I just did another run, so now the time you have to beat is 1:50. It was just about perfect so I don't think I can improve it anymore.

Are there any pipes or shortcuts in the first few levels that I should know about? I haven't really played this game much.

Does the version of zsnes matter? Im using 1.36 and got 30 seconds for the first level, so something must be up.

I'm using 1.36 also. I'm pretty sure I didn't lose two seconds on level 1, so one of our emulators must be running at the wrong speed. I'll watch my 1-1 zmv again to make sure I didn't just time it incorrectly. I just played the zmv and somehow it got broken, so I guess I'll have to do 1-1 over. Edit: My 1-2 and 1-4 zmvs are also broken now, but they weren't when I first watched them, I wonder how that happened. *throws something at whoever programmed ZSNES*

Heh. Mine desynched. Anyway, i did 1-2 and again got 2 seconds faster, and i made a one second mistake, so one of ours must be off. Probably mine. I'll go check.

I just did 1-1 again and got 31. 30 is probably possible, but the run would have to be just about perfect. Did you make any mistakes in 1-1? Edit: I just did 1-1 again, and this time the zmv suddenly decided to stop about 1 second before I stopped recording. *shoots yoshi egg at whoever was responsible for ZSNES's terrible recording* Edit 2: I tried some more and got 30 in 1-1, so I guess there wasn't a problem with ZSNES's speed anyway. Maybe I just wasn't motivated enough before because there was no competition, but now that other people are posting times I try harder.

Yeah, I redid it again and got 30 seconds again. Now beat my 1-2 time :p Is this the best route? Go as far right at as possible, super jump up, go right a bit, then left, then right again. Become a helicopter and fly all the way to the right. And I agree. Zsnes recording sucks. A lot.

Yeah, I think that's the best (and only) route. I just improved my 1-2 time to 1:00.

Why do I keep seeing this message so often: "ZSNESW.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Is it just me, or does this also happen often to other people using ZSNES?

I figured out where I lost time in 1-3 so I redid it and matched your time. It was actually a little under 45 seconds but I rounded it up. I think I can get 44 if everything goes perfectly. Edit: I tried again and I got a run that was just about flawless. I timed it twice to be safe, and it was about 43.4 so I rounded it down to 43. Edit 2: I just did another even more flawless run which I timed (twice) as 42.7. Edit 3: I just got 29.4 in 1-1. Edit 4: I just got 28.9 in 1-1. One important thing you should know is that when you hit the question mark and also when you kill the piranha plant, you should just hit them with an enemy and not use an egg because making eggs slows you down too much.

If any of you speed runners for this game are able to beat the 100% times posted on SDA's Yoshi's Island page and can record it being played on the cart/console, you should submit the movies to Radix. He's accepting individual level improvements. http://planetquake.com/sda/other/YoshisIsland.html

Yeah, I knew that 1-3 could be done lot faster, I just always seem to mess up. Good idea in 1-1 though. Forgot you could do that.
