There's a good chance the first halve of those cheats (so for the maximum speed cheat: 810F6BA4) are actually the memory addresses they change. If you're looking for something like current speed, I suggest you confirm that those addresses are maximum and minimum speed and look for addresses close to these. But, there's a very good chance it's stored in a complicated way, like maybe x/y/z components.

Has there been any new progress on this TAS? The LR tas was incredible. I can't wait to see MMF.

We just need some speedrun for this already, it doesn't need to be perfect, never in the history of humanity has the first run for a game been perfect, it's an iterative process, we just need a half-way decent iteration to get the ball rolling.

I do find that comment somewhat amusing coming from the guy who worked for three years on perfecting his Half-Life in "half an hour" run: http://speeddemosarchive.com/HalfLife.html#hardscripts But, I hear you. That's part of the reason I did test runs years back. I have had spurts of significant progress but I was faced with some really bad luck in Kalimari Desert recently that led to me taking some time to mess around with a different character on Luigi Raceway. Previously I had only been able to land early with Yoshi, but I managed to do it with Toad during that session. This may significantly change my luck, so I'm giving that a shot now. Also, I'm now using the reset-record version of Mupen to cut of several otherwise unskipable cut scenes.

Ya it might be amusing, but the thing is that run is far from perfect, and there were also 3 runs before it released while I was working on it, the 3rd of which I helped immensely on, I also released a single segment run during those stages and a segmented run for opposing force, a HL parallel story which is noticeably worse than my segmented HL run I did later even though I used the same process, the experienced I gained from OF helped for HL. I'm also planning a new run now that'll beat it by over 5 minutes, yes, in gameplay time that's about a 20% improvement which I would have thought was impossible 5 years ago and probably never materialized had I not made that 5th iteration 5 years ago.

I really appreciate the hard work that went in to your LR run. I feel like mario kart has to be one of the harder 64 games to TAS because not only to you have to steer your character through 3 dimensions and manipulate items and NPCs, you also have to trigonometry with the shells to hit you at the exact right time and angle. I can't wait to see more when you get around to it.

Ya, I totally appreciate the hard work and don't want to rush excellence and creativity. I'm just saying I think it would behoove everyone, and the people working on this included, to submit a rough draft first.

Weatherton has already made "rough draft" test runs of all cups except for mushroom cup. I think back when the site was first made it was ok to make less than optimal runs, but we've come such a long way that it doesn't make sense to purposefully submit a suboptimal run, when you could spend your time working on a (as much as you can make it) perfect run.

ic, can we see those runs then, we might have ideas after watching them, you could make a private youtube link or something.

It'd be hard to vote no on something of this caliber. Mario Kart 64.

Nice videos, thanks! Is there a shroom draft? For RR, why not just use 3 green shells for all 3 three laps instead of going backwards and getting items again after the first lap? Is that really faster? And why did you use ghost to get a blue shell, is that the only way to get one when in first, if so can you get other good stuff with a ghost in first or is blue shell it?

You can get anything with ghost, because it steals from other characters. You can't get anything in 1st place otherwise except green shell, banana, ghost (rare) and mushroom (rare) iirc.

I read the comments on toad's turnpike, he says you can only get items you could get when you're in first normally, I wasn't sure you could get blue shell in first, but I guess you can, so why not just get a blue shell instead of ghost?

On royal raceway can you get anything good to happen with a redshell boost off the zipper, such as making it to the other side without luiki guy? I was thinking on the first lap you might be able to get a shroom, then redshell and still boost off dk, then just use the blue shell right away on lap2 and cpu boost off a cpu close to the front, get shroom from either the ?s after landing or on lap3 and boost off bowser for the finish. Or if you could use the fake ? to boost up like in coco mountain that'd change everything.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been pretty busy with a few things. I'll try to address all the comments:

It is not possible to get green shells in eighth place, only red shells. I have to use the red shells to be able to get in first and get the green shells.

You cannot get the blue shell in first place, I use a mistake in the finish line (which exists on three courses, KTB, RRy and YV) to make the game think I am just starting the lap I am about to finish so it thinks I'm in eighth place for one frame. I have to use the ghost to be able to choose an item on that frame.

This appears to only be the case when you are playing with other human characters. In 1-player the items you can get are still based on what place you are in. See my previous answer for how I got the blue shell here.

I haven't calculated the exact probabilities, but here is a complete list of items you can get in first (in approximate order of priority): 1. Single green shell 2. Single banana 3. Banana bunch 4. Triple green shells 5. Ghost 6. Single mushroom 7. Single red shell Note: There are two special item boxes in the game that always give you a blue shell (even in first) they are the hot air balloon on Luigi Raceway and the big ramp on KTB.

I'm pretty sure the zipper doesn't affect your interaction with a shell, but I suppose it is worth testing.

The fake item boost (without a cpu towing it) requires a steep slope to be able to hop up into the item (the item then preserves the vertical velocity for an extended period of time). The only slope under the big ramp is the one going into the water, which has the property of making you tumble immediately.

I was thinking maybe the checkered wall could act as a steep slope, and what about wall jumping up the checkered wall? So with ghost and this 1 frame glitch you could get something like 3 shrooms or supper shroom, maybe these could help with the wall jumping? Or you could lay a fake ? by the wall on the first lap before you hit DK, then maybe shoom boosting into it could get you on the wall. The big thing I'm thinking of here is getting a shroom on the ramp on the 2nd lap and possibly boosting off a heavy CPU over the left railing to complete a quick lap without luiki maybe.

The checkered wall is perfectly vertical and so cannot (in this game) provide a vertical boost, unfortunately.

What in particular is the mistake on the finish line that allows this and you do think there's hope of finding it on MMF for a star each lap? I also remember hearing about plans for vanilla lake to boost to little island and then self boost off it to complete a lap after getting fished out. Is this still in the air? And is there a shroom circuit test run yet?

I wanted to try and TAS this game and i started a GP at the Star Cup. So far i have completed the first lap (at Wario Stadium) with a time of 3 secs exactly which is faster than your uploaded video. But i think i can sub 3 if i try.
