Super Mario Bros 3 minimal run, completed with the left+right glitch (which seems to be specific to the Super Mario All-Stars version).
Compared to Genisto's current minimal SMB3 run, this is about 25 seconds faster in the levels. But, it uses the SNES version, which adds about 29 seconds of delay outside of levels (I am ignoring those out-of-level delays; I'm simply explaining why the overall movie time appears to be slower).
Goals:
  • Aim for fastest time
  • Have 99 lives when game ends
I paid no attention whatsoever to number of points or lives after 99, and instead tried to do as many things differently/unusually as possible without losing time.
This is not nearly as impressive an accomplishment as Genisto's SMB3 run, but I think the result is different enough to be worth seeing separately from that, and I wanted to demonstrate what sort of things the glitch can allow for.
Essentially, pressing left+right in this game lets you accelerate very quickly to full running speed and makes you immune to the slowdown that is normally caused by floating, swimming, or going uphill. Also, it lets you jump at maximum height if you let go of left+right before jumping. (My attempts to demonstrate its effect on swimming speed weren't very successful because you can't really see Mario in the sea of mud, but you can see its affects on hills and midair acceleration even when floating.)
One problem with fireballs was that they always travel much slower than Mario this way, so it wasn't possible to throw fireballs at things many screens away, and even just hitting something in front of you requires slowing down if it's dangerous to touch and can't be jumped over.
I do not know why I got a flower card in 1-1. I couldn't get a star there without slowing down, which was fine with me since normally I would need to slow down to get a flower card later, although going in the order star-star-flower might look better. Sadly, jumping into the clouds in 1-1 didn't turn out to be best, but at least I found something else to do while rushing through it.
My least favorite parts are the ones where something very specific needs to be done to not be obviously worse than what Genisto has already done, and I wasn't willing to copy Genisto's input for those parts although no matter what I did had to end up looking similar anyway. This is specifically the case in the 1-ups-with-racoon-mario section and the battle with Bowser. I wasn't quite as precise/efficient at these as Genisto (overall about 15 frames and some additional 1-ups that remained inexplicably out of reach after many many retries), but this movie isn't intended to be the same as that and those parts don't look too bad anyway.
My favorite parts are the regular (non-autoscrolling) courses, especially the very first level (admittedly it's a bit downhill from there after that). A warpless run would have more of those courses, although I wasn't going to commit to a run like that, especially not just to demonstrate something like this.

Holy crap! This was unexpected! Truly an interesting and well done run, to be honest I think this run was in a way more interesting than Genisto's run. Though it's hard to compare the two. There were so many great and entertaining parts on this run that I don't even know on what I should start praising you for :) I vote YES on this, I would vote YES a thousand times if I could. Extremely amazing and wonderful stuff. One of the best TAS I've seen, give this a star! PS: I had no problems downloading and watching this, so the submission process seems to have worked fine.

I'm just amazed you got this all done after Tompa brought up the idea this week and it's been only a day since you pitched the thought "I think somebody should look into this more.".

FODA recently brought up the point of how he's been able to get the flower at full speed on 1-2 and other levels on the NES version. In Genisto's published run he also gets the flower on 8-1 without slowing down. (Note that you normally have to slow down a lot to get the flower since it's actually the mushroom that comes directly after the star). It's not known what causes this, but it doesn't seem to be directly tied to Mario's speed, the particular level, or even lag. In Genisto's movie it's clear that the card sequence on 8-1 is behind by more than just a few frames which results in showing the flower for an extended period. I'm now quite convinced that with enough patience Vatchern ought to be able to do his 100% run getting all stars and flowers to avoid fireworks without having to slow down. It is pretty surprising that something as obscure as this happens on the SNES version as well. -hanzou

that was entertaining to see some new tricks done on SMB3, even if they're done on a different game. I'd vote yes. As I decided not to spam for voting rights, I might be able to vote in a couple of months.

Although the movie shows off a nice glitch, I personally don't feel like it should deserve its own run based on it. I mean, I see why it should, but I just feel kind of "ehh..." about this one. I can't really figure out why. Maybe I'm just too used to the NES SMB3. Anyway, I'm not going to vote because I can't think of good reasons to back up how I feel. Is this acceleration glitch on any other games from All-Stars?

It's nice to see TAS of Mario3 in All-Stars since there is more food for eyes (with the better graphichs and all). Although I though they would have fixed the duck-and-jump-through-wall glitch for snes version. Anyways, looks very nice. Very entertainingly played. Me like it! ;) Voting for YES.

Very entertaining movie! The backward-glitch was impressive and even in the auto-scroller levels it was thoroughly entertaining to see so many different moves and tricks that were all close to death. The graphic is phantastic compared to NES which makes this game completely different in the eyes. Good job nitsuja! This movie deserves a clear YES even if its not a original game but because of the backward-glitch and the very beautiful graphic, not to mention the quality of the run.

Hmm. It desyncs here. I'm using the right rom, and no game has ever desynced for me.

You have the Left+Right option enabled?

Input -> Joypad Configuration... and check the 'Left+Rt/Up+Dn' from the lower right corner, just above the Cancel and OK buttons. Or atleast that's how it's in snes9xw-improvement7.

This is kind of interesting, though a little bit obscure. It didn't make me jump out of my seat or anything, but I don't see any reason why the movie shouldn't be published.

How about the fact that there is already a warpful movie of super mario bros 3? As for me I'm with FODA here, I don't really know what to vote. Nothing wrong with the movie itself, it's great!

I still think a 4-game run could be cool. But I would rather see that for MegaRockMan MegaWorld: The Wily Wars.

A 4-game run would be cool, i agree because those games can be completed very quick. wait a minute, there are 5 games on SMAS + world... 5 mins + 18 (lost levels) ? + 11 + 10 + ending scenes (maybe pick the biggest ending last, probably mario world) = 50 minutes movie? am i far off here? and thats 5 games... As for willywars how big would the movie be?

Note that, while they apparently did not fix any bugs at all from SMB3 (and just added one more), they did fix bugs from the earlier games, for instance up+down no longer works on SMB2 ladders, and maybe I'm wrong about this but it seems the physics or collision detection of SMB1/SMB2j were changed a bit. A 4/5-game run could be neat though. (Imagine if all those were done 100% instead, that would be the longest Mario run ever.) (BTW, I think the duck-through-corner glitch was intentional in some cases, for instance there's a secret room I go into in the fortress before Bowser's castle that has no other way to enter it... well I didn't check if a P-switch door opens up there, but that invisible coin block was way too conveniently placed.) About this run, I don't know. A warpless run of this would probably be better and at this point (until JXQ or someone does it, at least) less confusing/controversial as to whether it should be published, but I still think this is interesting to see.

I watched this movie (thanks TNSe for providing an AVI for watching it), and I don't think this movie justifies itself to be published. It's Super Mario Bros 3, and we already have a SMB3 movie. That it's for SNES doesn't make it okay -- it's still the same game. That there's this left-right glitch doesn't make it okay either. I think this glitch is as lame as the left-right glitch in Tiny Toons (I still think it was an error to accept that movie). My vote is "no".

If the glitch was on the NES version would you still think it is lame? because i think it's a glitch as much as any other left+right glitch.

Perhaps runs that extensively use left+right/up+down could be published into the technical demonstration category - runs like Zelda 2, SMB2(USA), Tiny Toons (I didn't realize this used left+right, I must not know the game well)...and then have runs that get through the game without using them published into the normal runs. Of course, this would add to the already large pile of work for Bisqwit and the judges, so...just a suggestion.

Aren't all the movies technical demonstrations, though?
