You'll want to look at my latest console speedrun strategy here. The main differences would be using Close Call for a faster Bowser (and maybe Lava Piranha) battle. Also, you'd probably want to forget about Bombette and just use Bow's Spook attack to instantly win all the forced non-boss battles. I've done the math, and the lower levels don't seem (at first glance) to mess up the later boss strategies. Oh yeah, win a POW Block or two from the forced Koopa Troopa fights in the basement of the Koopa Bros. Fortress.

Some good stuff in there, ill have to keep that in mind, thanks for posting it. The save states problem is still largely holding me back from going any father with the run, because it freezes a lot.

Well still nothing on the save states. If save states dont work right yet this run is impossible to TAS (because it wont be the fastest it can be).

Just a hunch, but do the freezes happen with other RSP plugins?

I have not tried any other emulator plugins, i didn't know that was the cause. I'll go try the other one right now.

Even with the other RSP plugin it still freezes.

I was making a play on words.

and then I posted a picture of an ice sculpture. Uch, explaining jokes always kills them. Anyways, I saw from the OoS topic that you'd stick with just paper mario. Sarcasm aside, you really will learn so much faster and better if you do not distract yourself with hundreds of games at once. I distracted myself to hell and back when I started out, and I wish to god that someone had been as firm with me as I am with you to stick with one game and don't do anything else until that one game is done. If you need any more advice about anything, I'm perfectly willing to share what I've learned over the past year+.

I think he probably couldn't see the image... which might make it kinda hard to get the joke. Nice sculpture btw.

Thanks for your support! I'll keep that in mind if i need anymore help! As for the picture, nothing shows up on my screen. I was going to post a paper mario WIP tonight, and it was close to where i wanted to end the WIP at, but then i loaded a save state and it was corrupt yet again. I've ran through the M64 file 6 times now and tried to get some save states i can start rerecording from, and non of them work, its pissing me off.

If you're able to load a WIP, can you please upload a video that doesn't require an emulator to watch? Like at YouTube?

The only graphical problems are the pause menu (brief glitches when you change categories -- e.g. badges to map) and the usual pause when you hit start during gameplay. Also, the characters aren't shaded in dark areas, but you still get the cool "shadow effect" when near a point of light like a candle. Granted, Glide64 is designed for Voodoo cards like mine, but it comes with a wrapper that lets it work with any card (at the cost of a lot of speed). But if my 450 MHz computer can run the game at near 100% without sound (most of the time -- it slows to a crawl at Sushie's Tidal Wave, although the move itself looks perfect), then a modern computer can handle the slow-down that comes with the wrapper.
This is fixed in the newest Glide64 Napalm release. The pause screen errors are fixed if you tick "read every frame". This works well, of course on computers with PCI-Express video cards. And yes, any modern computer which has a video card that supports pixel shaders should run the game perfectly, with zero slowdowns with framebuffer effects, like the tidal wave effects. The updated wrapper I have been working on is a vast improvement over the one included in Wonder ++, and its hardware framebuffer support should work on any video card. :) It also, will be bundled in the next public Glide64 release, which should be this spring.

I could upload an avi on rapid share if you'd like...the file is too long and too big to fit on youtube.

Here is my current progress on paper mario (m64 file):http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1344075107/Paper%20Mario%20TAS.m64 Sorry there is no avi file, it was too big to fit on anysite lol. It cuts off at the end because i needed to hit the heart box so i could kill the gomba's, and when trying to rerecord over it it kept freezing so i gave up on it for today. Should be a good enough to give you an idea of what its at so far. Also open to suggestions Note: im proud to announce this has been played with frame advance almost the whole movie (a first for me)! A few parts were not using frame advance, but was at 20% speed (only about 5% of the movie).

You could try cutting the AVI file into smaller parts so they would all fit.

I have tried to watch your m64 video on my emulator. Unfortunately, it appears that you are loading a save file instead of making a new save file. You need to delete whatever save files for Paper Mario there are in the save directory of Mupen 64 rerecording. Unless you can fix it by editing the m64 file somehow, it appears that you may need to restart the run so anybody that has the ROM and a good enough computer can watch it without needing the avi. If you are not doing that, then either there is an issue like in Zelda Majora's Mask where the movie desynchs when trying to make the save file or my computer is lagging in such a way that it desynchs at the start... :(

Wow...that really pisses me off. I even deleted the files before i started the movie, and i recorded the movie from start. I don't really want to have to redo that whole part over unless I have to. If you need the save file to run the movie i could upload it so that you could have it. I'm really sorry this happened.

Hmm... I just put my own save file in the save directory and nothing changed... There is a huge lag between when you press start to access the load file menu and when it actually appears, so maybe it is just me. Let me try this on my better computer... EDIT: Nothing changed as in no save file appeared to actually load. Maybe Mupen64 ignores save files on purpose. EDIT 2: My other computer does no better. I tried Jabo_Direct3D8 and Rice 6.1.4 and neither made any difference. I even changed the RSP plugin and nothing changed. The lag I experienced on this computer was only a little pause in the emulation, but maybe that is all that is needed to cause the desynch. What happens is that save file 1 is selected, A is entered, and then it becomes obvious that something went wrong because nothing happens for a while and then a bunch of commands are entered. Try playing it on your computer and see if it does the same thing.

Are you using the same rom and plugins as i am on the movie? Here is all of save files i have for paper mario (its zipped, to download scroll download and click on free, then wait for your download):http://rapidshare.com/files/88460140/paper_mario_saves.zip.html Hope that will get it working for you. Edit: The whole movie works fine for me.

Somehow it worked after the umpteenth try. I guess this must be because I actually allowed it to run for a while and actually open a newly created save file through coincidence. I will watch it in a bit.
