I've been working on a TAS of this game for a little while. Because of school I don't have tie to add onto this tas. If anyone wants to watch/improve this WIP go ahead. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/229313755/BOMBERMAN64U(USA).m64 With some new tricks. If no one decides to improve it I might restart it again.

Well I tased the first level as well and saved 34 frames, not much but i was thinking of actually going through with this TAS. But I was wondering whether to do an any% or 100% by bag of magic food's rules? Id like to know this before going far into the run. http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=56d15122c2c21d79d2db6fb9a8902bda Also I packed in a savestate to skip the mainscreen that should work as long as its the napalm plugin

100% most definitely. It would be sort of any%/100% because you would need to beat the level in a certain time to get a gold card.

[wildspec]I dunno. I think (it's been what, ten years?) that some levels don't allow you to get all items (are we including costume bits here?) in one go, simply by way of taking more than time bonus. Probably escapable with TASing, with one or two exceptions, where you have to go down a whole other branch. But it's been long enough that I really don't remember. . .not even whether I managed to get the gold costume(Get all Gold cards AND complete game within X time limit) fairly. I think there was some way of knocking yourself out that gave you a vertical motion that wasn't useful realtime, worth checking to see if you can actually ascend without a jump-off platform- would allow in-level sequence break or twenty.[/wildspec]

Yeah, I remember that was an alternate method of jumping, and possibly the only method in the sequel. Say, does anyone remember if you have to beat a level to save the costume pieces you collect? Because maybe you could skip them, get 5 gold cards first, then come back for them if that's not the case. At least that would fix that one Blue Resort level if we can't shave enough time off.

You didn't actually have jumping in this one, just "walk off ledge and bounce along bombs". (Or bouncing stacks of bombs. Making stairways of these was a frequent necessity for side bits.)

100% then? Im thinking of starting today then since it is substantially longer than an any%. I guess ill post a wip after the first level. It would be helpful though to have bag's Wips to watch. All the links expired before I ever got a chance to watch them. Also for the napalm plugin, for some reason the rom doesnt playback correctly if i playback a movie file. I have to do a work around where I edit the romsettings.ini file. Does anyone know a fix?

It took a while but I finally finished the first level of my 100% TAS http://www.mediafire.com/file/munymnmztdw/Chaosv1-BombermanWIP.rar Hope you all enjoy it. Since it is my first TAS any and all comments would be greatly appreciated. Also make sure to turn get framebuffer info on for the naplam plugin or it doesnt sync Edit: About the beginning, I can skip it if i reset. Thats allowed right?

It would be allowed but mupen doesn't record Reset in the movie file, so for the moment, it's impossible.

Well it does if I use the Mupen with reset recording. Unfortunately I will have to restart the TAS from scratch now, as this method screws with the enemy placement in the first level or something and I cant hex it in :(

The problem with the record reset mupen is that in Linux, the reset command forces the emulator to close (so DeHackEd tells me.) That's many viewers/encoders who miss out, and the emulator patch itself hasn't been accepted at the site yet. Generally, runs that use a reset to skip the intro are few and far between. I know of two: DKC3 (all of the recent versions of snes9x have record reset fully working) and Gunstar Super Heroes (the game itself allows a button press sequence, much like NES up+a on 2nd controller, to reset without using the rest feature of the emulator- even though VBA itself has soft reset.) I recommend that you don't use resetting, and include the savestate in the submission. Most people know how to load savestates. Rules wise, you'd be making a full run with an emulator that is not accepted at the site. How much faster is your WIP? Did you get the fastest time gold card and the other cards (the hidden ones + 30 enemies) in one go? I noticed lot of lag; can you maybe experiment with the angle and distance of the camera to try and reduce lag?

Well Id like to hear from a judge because i cant go back to hex for some reason. Ive ask bisqwit and he says <Bisqwit> If windows don't close, and the end result is that the emulated devices that are reset on the real hardware when the game is reset, are also reset on the emulator, and nothing else, it's fine it doesnt close on my computer but since it does on linux like you said ill have to look into it You cant get all five cards+2 costume pieces in one go for the first level, not even with TAS techniques, but id imagine some level i will be able to. As for the lag, I think some of it is because the napalm plugin is hardware intensive, but I think zooming in might help

Yeah, zooming in makes it go a tiny bit faster, I guess because the system doesn't have to draw as much.

Much like Goldeneye, but better. Or the opposite of Blast Corps. Anyways, I was asking because there was a very long period where the game ran at 30 FPS, in a segment that I did not recall having as much lag from any previous WIP. I was asking about the fastest gold card because in your WIP you enter the stage and do the 100% themed gold cards first. Are you going to get the fastest card next? If you are, I recommend to do what BoMF and woodendoorknob did and do the fastest time card first, because showing the fastest route first then the more impressive 100% route has better flow. A fast completion followed by a full completion I personally think is more entertaining, rather than doing a stage fully and then redoing just to collect the last gold card. (this is not counting those stages where it's possible to grab all gold cards in one go.) Also, I'd like to reiterate that the vast majority of the runs on the site probably have a method for resetting that will skip the intro, and very few do. The ones that do, everyone can still watch. I think on an emulator where the final movie won't work for everybody, you should shoot for maximum viewer capability, and include a savestate in the submission so that people can skip it if they so choose.

I think the part you mean is the part in the area with the two costume pieces. I didnt notice it then but for some reason it really lags the game Im going to try different camera angles and zooming in to avoid this, but will a drop in framerate count against my time?

I already thought of that because its faster to get the upgrades from the fastest time card part than the 100% like I did, but you are right about the stylistic part as well.

Are you allowed to pack savestates with submissions? Also Ive decided to continue without skipping the intro and am going to redo this level

I remember this game being ridiculously difficult if you wanted 100% (I remember specifically being stuck on getting all the gold cards from a boss in the last world; some sort of blue robot thing?). I will be excited to watch the progress of this.

Although defeating the robotic runner is difficult, seeing it defeated in a TAS will be entertaining. Especially in a 100% run. Besides, since the game is very difficult, doing a TAS may be the best way to maximize the outcome as judging where to put the bombs otherwise will be far too difficult, y'know.

I really doubt this. Why wouldn't you want to skip a useless cutscene at the beginning as long as you don't break the rules? It saves time watching it from the beginning, it saves space in the movie recording, and if anyone still wants to watch it, all they have to do is start up the game.

Is there any new info on this TAS? It will be more interesting to watch than the normal speed run. It had too many errors that can be avoided with proper timing and placement.

Is this going to be a 100% run? This great game should be completed. And, since this will be a TAS, all those annoying mistakes in the "real-time run" can be easily avoided. I wonder how much faster this run will be?
