Here's the first movie. 18:22 long. Read the rules before voting. 1st Nesvideos Dream Team Contest Competition "Gaiden" Game Boy - Super Mario Land 2 TAS by READ TEAM RULES RED TEAM RULES IS: BagOfMagicFood FODA Randil Shinryuu - Abuses programming errors - No deaths - Manipulates luck - Aims for fastest completion - Takes damage to save time Our team managed to work together very well, with FODA testing some routes and glitches, BagOfMagicFood doing research on tricks and optimizing the run, while Randil and Shinryuu experimented with the game's physics and did good optimization too. This was throughly a good experience although it was very time taking since we only had 2 weeks to do it! The pipe glitch: - Found at David Wonn's site, this glitch enabled us to cut several minutes of our first route testrun (32 minutes long) when used correctly. We've found a lot of bricks with unusual behavior, some would lead to secret exits, some would do damage, some would give several coins per second while some would reset the game and some would even give illegal opcodes which automatically closes the rom! This was very tricky and we started the final version only a couple of days from the end of the contest becasue of all the experimenting with this glitch and finding better ways to use it. The glitch consists of getting in a pipe and exiting the level so that mario is still going down when he leaves. This way, when you enter another level, mario will still be going down for 1 frame, enough to push him inside the floor. For some reason, there are blocks below on most levels and they even work for boss levels. The 100 enemies starman: - This run kills 99 enemies before entering wario's castle to save a few frames on those ball bosses. We found that feature to be pretty neat :) The "hit on a passing block rule": - If mario jumps just past a block above his head, he is pushed forward 1 extra pixel. The movement rule: - Mario moves 1 pixel then 2 then 1 then 2 and so on while running. The jump height rule: - Mario's jump can be higher if the "A" button isn't held past a certain point (26 frames). If the "A" button is kept on hold for 1 extra frame, the jump height is shortened considerably. The fall off a ledge rule: - If mario is too fast, when he falls off a ledge he will do a little hop up and then start falling slowly. To avoid this, release "B" before the ledge to get low speed enough, so he falls at a considerably higher speed. The horizontal speed while in the air rule: - When in the air, if mario goes below a certain speed, he can't achieve max speed again unless he reaches ground to get running speed.[/url]

Well, I just heard from Vatchern that his team quit working a week ago and never finished the run. All they finished was a test run that he doesn't know the whereabouts of now.

That are bad news. So no competition anymore. :-( So when no other movie comes here some comments from me. Nice fast movie. The only problem for me, the often pipe glitch makes the movie boring. So not much entertainment in this movie, only some from the Stages which completed without the Pipe Glitch. The last Stages looks great and entertainment for me and the moon Stage. So for this short time at all a great movie. Have wonder me only a bit over the high rerecords for such a short movie.

I guess that movie is Nesvideos quality. Thought about submitting it?

Heh, V1.2 of this game actually fixed that glitch. But the alternate run should probably be an all-levels run and play the secret levels too. Hey, this movie will also work with the Japanese version of V1.0. V1.2 stays in sync, but only up until Mario's supposed to fall through the floor, of course.

This movie is better optimized than all of my movies, i'd say it's rockman style optimized, that's why the high re-record count. I wanted a feature that i thought would look cool in the video but would waste like 10 seconds so it was voted that we shouldn't add it XD that was getting 999 coins :P well, we were aiming for fastest completion so there was no room for "taste" entertainment, so it was natural that we needed to be frame eaters. But there are still imperfections in the run, it's probably gonna be remade for submission.

Wow, great movie! i liked the space levels the best. it would have been interesting to see if both teams would have found the same glitches and used them in the same way. this seems like the mario game in which glitches save the most time.

I'd still say this contest idea was a success. The movie was really good. FODA mentioned that there are possible improvements. Are you guys all going to work together again on an improved run? And how much time do you think can be saved? The pipe glitch is pretty neat, I don't think it subtracted too much from the run... there's still lots of action.

A Super Mario Land 2 speedrun was just added to Speed Demos Archive today: http://speeddemosarchive.com/MarioLand2.html The time was 32:06... I haven't seen it yet, but I thought it could be interesting to know.

I might take a shot at it on the emualtor later. BTW, how do they "dump" his movie or even record it? huh?

maybe the SNES adaptator for GB games ? then record the SNES on tape normally. have to watch the run first though. //edit just read the comments, indeed the Game Boy Player is mentionned.

I talked to Nach about the scrolling glitch he mentioned a while back, where you push Up or Down in some area to change its layout. It turns out that it doesn't seem to affect how the level acts, just how the level looks. I haven't seen that in action yet, but I managed to get the same general effect by putting Start on auto-fire. So do you think the "play the demo" code should be allowed? You could abuse it by playing a level that's shorter than the first level, then resetting so you have the intro level cleared even though you didn't play it.

do you, or does any player of your team have any plan to re-tas the game and actually submit it ? it's a great classic and it'd deserve to have a run published ; the site lacks GB classics IMHO.

Yeah... I just got a little tired of doing tests to figure out the fastest route. Once I've got that, it shouldn't be TOO hard.

Heh, this was a very long time ago. I really liked this topic. Would anyone want to do this again? I'm sure a lot of people would say this, but I feel like I've got a good game for such a contest in mind.

If this is going to happen again, maybe the rules should be revised. I thought there was too much emphasis on making sure neither team had an advantages of familiarity, and not enough on making sure both teams liked the game choice and thought they had something surprising to do with it.

The players did have the opportunity to vote on the console and the game of choice... I don't think there could be much more done to engineer the contest to the participants without giving one team or individual a great advantage. That could still result in a great movie, but it would be a crappy contest. It's hard to think of a game that is very familiar to everyone that hasn't already been clobbered. I mean, we could pick Super Mario Bros 3, but then the entire contest would likely be decided within a half dozen frames... not that this would be a bad thing.

I would suggest that both teams discuss and agree upon a small list of games that they (or at least one person from each team) think would be good ideas and are not opposed to doing, after initial suggestions but before any final poll that decides which of those games is chosen. Maybe it would be more interesting if the contest happens in stages, per level in the game. Each team submits a level, and whichever one is better (probably faster) is used by both teams to start on the next level, and so on. It limits what games would make good choices, but it adds something to the contest in that it becomes possible to lose one round and still make a comeback on the next, as well as ensuring better pacing of the contest. Anyway, it doesn't look like this is going to happen again anytime soon, unless a bunch of people all happen to have the time and interest...
