I'm working on this game now. My second run was 30:07, but now I hope it can be brought down to maybe 25 or something like that. I thought it was pretty nice, but it isn't. It is obsolete because I found that it is possible to skip the ghost, thus saving almost 4 minutes! Also, I found a more efficient way to hop on corners (if you jump at a corner at the exact right angle, you can jump immediately in the other direction, saving some time when jumping to a higher platform). Sheeis. So now I have to start again. If someone knows of some glitches, shortcuts, time-saving strategies or something else I could use, please post here. In case anyone is interested, here is the .fmv of my second run. It shows the route I'm using (please ignore the part where I get the ghost). http://www.mmedia.is/shodan/files/blublu2-ufouria.fmv

You can skip Shades? That's cool, I never knew that. The only problem that comes to mind is are you sure you're going to manage the jumps on the enemies over the lava pits (before the armored cat) without him? What I liked about your vid was that you skipped Freeon-Leon's secret weapon alltogether and your route was good. What you should improve, IMO, are the boss battles in the beginning. When fighting Freeon-Leon and Gil, be sure that they are flashing at all times, thus beating them in the shortest amount of time possible. I would also like to see more enemies killed. I believe it's possible to kill the enemies in a way that does not slow you down. I will test this soon. Overall your movie was very good, and all that I wanted a bit more was skillful (and less skillful) tricks. Even little things, like bouncing the "heads" (that you shoot bosses with) off walls and that sort of thing.

I couldn't make the second jump even with him, I had to get hurt and then walk on the bottom of the lava while flashing (as you saw). Worst case scenario, I have to get another medicine (there's another one in the path) and use it to pass both lava pits.

Jumping on enemies doesn't slow you down, but I thought it looked "cooler" to not kill any enemies unless they were in the way.

It runs too fast, but I don't mind, and I hope others don't mind either. If anything, it makes the run less boring to watch since it's faster. I guess I *could* find the japanese rom...

Okay, the third version is finally finished. It's not quite as good as I had hoped, finishes at 27:03. I made some mistakes climbing in this one, and one or two places are slower than in the previous version. Damn. Oh well, I'll redo it in a year or so. Right now I'm completely sick of this game. Until then, you'll have to make do with this flawed but somewhat nice version. http://www.mmedia.is/shodan/files/blublu3-ufouria.fmv

Wow, I thought I was the only one who played this (I got the original even :D) and while I've finished it, I've never known about any tricks or shortcuts. This'll be insanely interesting for me to watch :)

Yes, Ufouria is really nice. I played through it again just some weeks ago. I never checked for a fastest route though, just tried to get all stuff :).

Maybe there's just a huge backlog right now.

The 30-minute movie will get rejected eventually (it is still in the submission pile) since I've made a 27 minute one, but I haven't submitted that one because it is very flawed in some areas. I'm going to make a better version some day, probably using FCEU instead of crappy old Famtasia (will FCEU ever be supported on this site by the way?).

Yes it is rejected. You've just said you can do a 3 minutes faster.

Sounds like it can be even faster :)

Any thoughts of redoing this now with FCE Ultra? I'd love to finally get this one published. Also, when you kill enemies, it would probably look cooler if they only dropped energy balls. I think the possibility of dropping energy ball or the thing you can throw is pretty random, of course energy ball being harder to get. I'm not very sure of this, but at least after quick try I could just kill enemy, reload, kill enemy almost exactly the same way at the same time and get a different item.

Wow, I had totally forgotten this thread. No. I lost my motivation when I learned that it's actually not possible to skip Shades (the ghost) at all. The "trick" I discovered was simply a result of running the PAL cart at NTSC speeds, or something like that. I don't think this is a legit "trick". I think I tried the japanese version (called Hebereke) but it didn't work there either. (I don't think there is a US version). I tried for a while to get through the ice area without the lizard guy, but that didn't work out either. This game isn't really well suited for a good TAS unless someone finds a nice glitch that allows one to go through walls or something similar.

I don't remember too well but where exactly it is required to have Shades? Only possible places I remember are the big jump, which is after ice cave and going up from there and the lava pit, but I'm quite sure the lava pit at least can be skipped as you did the second part by taking damage and running across the lava while blinking.

Yes, the ONLY place where you need Shades is that big jump right after the ice cave. There is no other place where he is required. The really annoying part is that the gap is precisely one pixel too big. To gain that one pixel, you need a huge detour down into the mines to get that stupid character.

Damn, that sucks. I guess you have tried extensively to get over the jump by any means imaginable. By the way, how does it actually help to run the game too fast as with Famtasia to get over the gap? Some kind of a bug?

It's probably just how the movement's calculated in the PAL version to compensate for the frame rate.

Funny, I managed to make the jump with FCEU having Pal Emulation. Am I mistaken or did I just make it? I don't have movie though yet. Edit: I don't know how I actually made it. Now when recording movie after short testing perioid I don't seem able to make it just like that. But I'm guessing it matters that on what pixel you land on the ground, because when accelerating, Bop-Louie goes more than 1 pixel per frame. Anyway, it's possible. Edit2: Ok, I managed to do it again. Here's a movie of it: http://dz.daug.net/stuff/ufouria-e-gapjump.fcm

Since the Rygar run exploits the different speed in the PAL version to jump over a gap you can't jump over in the US version and that run got accepted I'd say using the PAL version to get over the gap is allowed. After all, it says in the rules that you can use a different version if you have a good reason to (in this case skipping one character).

I think you have misunderstood, there is no US version of Ufouria, only PAL. And the original JP version which goes by the name Hebereke.

I'm starting to wonder now, is work still being done on this movie, or is it at a stand-still? It's one I'd really like to see.

Me too. The game is just too cute to be ignored like this!

I'm pretty sure no one is working on this game. It's still one glitch short of TASable. Right now, a TAS will be super duper boring. Plus, there's already a speedrun on speeddemosarchive.com.
