Little Nemo done fast using fceu-0.98.13-rerecording.
The run
  • Aims for the fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
and depending on the way you look at it, abuses a programming oversight (more on this later).
Hey everyone! This is a new movie of Little Nemo, a game where the player has to collect keys and get to the end of each level and finally save Slumberland from the evil Nightmare King. The length of my movie is 24:38 and the published run by Sleepz is 27:08, which makes my run a whole 2,5 minutes shorter. Sleepz's movie is almost two years old now so it's no wonder I managed to improve his movie.
The thing about the game is that there are helpful animals which have to be utilized all over the levels. The violet lizard is the fastest animal and he walks faster than Nemo, so I use him whenever I have the chance (except for level 1 where it's faster not to because the changing takes time). The frog walks very slowly but when he jumps he can move just as fast as Nemo. The bee is faster than Nemo as well, but he has to land occasionally. The mouse is very clumsy and walks slower than Nemo. The mole is faster than Nemo, and I change back to Nemo as late as possible because of this.
Making the movie was surprisingly easy. Despite the fact that the order of the keys is not set in stone, the best routes are easy to see without even testing them. It only took me about 12 hours to make the movie thanks to the game's stiff and simple physics.
The improvements
Probably the biggest timesaver is using FCEU and frame advance to do things on the first frame possible. As for tricks, the biggest timesaving trick is skipping all text in the beginning of levels by jumping. This is the programming oversight I mentioned earlier. I also made sure not to make any excessive jumps, as jumping is slower than walking because of the short stop after each jump. A big improvement was charging the beam to the fullest and not wasting any time doing anything else while fighting the bosses in the end. Another small improvement was never taking damage when it slowed me down. I made sure taking damage always pushed me forward.
That's about it. Please feel free to remind me if I forgot anything. I hope you enjoy the movie.

Really great movie. A great improvement over the current run too. I liked how you could save a lot of time by taking damage in certain places. Definite Yes, good job.

Yes, great one. I like the two times where you do such big shortcuts by getting hit and land on higher places. Well done.

Very interesting run if I may say so! A yes vote from my side. Good to see this game improved. I liked your headbanging part in the train level. :D

Welcome to year 2006! It's a great improvement, and it's even obvious when watching, that you've actually thought of new unique, creative ways to play the situations of the game. Accepting this submission.

Did you test whether it'd be more efficient to hit the last three bosses with a bunch of semi-charged shots? Other than that, it's a good improvement over the last version.

Yes, I did test it. As I say in the submission text, I made sure I would fire full-powered shots when possible. And thank you for your kind words and for accepting the movie, Bisqwit.

Hmm... Is it possible to beat the bosses by hitting them physically with the scepter or what ever it is he's throwing bolts with?

It's already accepted, but I have a question: in cloud ruins, when the game autoscrolls upwards, you are on the left when the scrolling stops, why not on the right? Does it mess up the scrolling somehow? Same thing when the game stops scrolling down at frame 50200.

I saw that, but it could have meant that you were optimal as far as firing fully-charged shots without testing semi-charged ones. I'm glad to know you tested it both ways.

Yeah. But a great hell of a lot slower, since physical hits do so little damage compared to beaming them (I know...I used to think the wand was only good for physical hits @_@)...

If you're too far to the right, the screen won't start scrolling to the right before you go back and reach a certain point. I ensured I started moving at the first frame possible. As for Highness' question, what 4matsy said. You would think hitting stuff with the wand would be effective because it's so risky to do but sadly it doesn't work that way.

Good job Kyrsimys. Skipping the dialog was great trick and it makes video much more interesting because the action doesn't stop. Very well planned movie. Voting YES. And here are some screenshot suggestions: If needed I'll add some more later.

Not to be rude or anything like that. But if I had never played this game before I think those screenshots would have scarred me off thinking "This game doesn't looke funny at all"

Maybe you should show him using that power beam! Or riding the train, the train is cool.

Thanks Bisqwit :) I'll take a look if there are any published runs without screenshot.

That's a pretty low rerecord count.

Re-records ain't everything. I found the movie great. I played this as a kid but haven't played it at all since then, so I remember it as a kinda hard game (even though it's not). This run makes it look like it's really easy though ;)

Excellent run. Seeing a run of this game makes me wanna pull out my VHS tape of Little Nemo (the movie) again. I need to get that thing digitized. Who would have thunk Mickey Rooney was a voice actor?
