I used SNES9x v1.43+ for windows
Settings:
  • Use WIP1 Timing
  • Allow Left+Right/Up+Down
  • Volume Envelope Height Reading
  • Fake Mute desync workaround
  • Sync samples with sound CPU
  • Used no passwords.
  • Take hits to save time. Avoiding damage completely is impossible.
  • Goal was to beat game as fast as possible while being as entertaining as possible.
  • Final Fantasy - Mystic Quest is one of the first RPG's to ever come out. A lot of people say that this game was made poorly. It was released in the US in 1992, and as a pioneer to RPG gaming it was designed to warm people to the idea of an RPG. The game is reletively simple and user friendly. Armor and weapons automatically equip and the second player can even be set to attack automatically. The music in my opinion is quite good and it's been one of my favorites since I beat it a long time ago...The goal in this game is to acquire the four elemental stones from bosses who have stolen them. This will lead to the Dark King who has caused the whole mess.
  • I watched Hero's movie. I noticed that a lot of the paths he chose were very good, but I also noticed that some of the luck manipulation could be improved. I set out to do this. This movie was very time consuming to make, though the difficulty wasn't too much. I discovered new ways of manipulating luck that I didn't see in Hero's run of this game. Things like what monsters the next battle will have are decided as far back as your last move in the current battle. I abused that A LOT. Most of my time was saved in battle times. First strikes, critical hits and even the attacks my enemies used were manipulated heavily. Not only for damage taken, but for speed as well. I saved a lot of time in boss battles, though they also took the longest to manipulate. There are a few places where it looks as though I could have optimized more. Those could have been done, but at the cost of time I didn't need to use to do it.
  • I retrieved Cure earlier in the game which saved me about a minute, just as Hero had predicted. I can understand the time it would have taken him to start over and get this spell. This is another reason why I wanted to do this run. :)
  • I would like to personally thank Hero for first, making his run which modivated me to try a run of my own. Second, he was so nice as to answer a question I had about Pazuzu's tower. I hadn't known that where he appeared was a random thing. I had always assumed that you HAD to get all three switches. Thanks Hero!!
  • In total I saved 43313 frames against Hero's run, or about 12 minutes.

Sounds interesting! 43k frames is a very good ammount of time saved. Wonder if it's possible to improve it further? I will check this run and give input when I got more time on my hands.

I wonder that myself. I put a lot of work into the run. I'd like to think that's about as optimized as you can get it, but if anyone else can find things I missed then I guess it's fair game. :)

Your Welcome DonamerDragon! This was a very very well made run, and is a great improvement compared to my run. I am happy to see my run get improved by this much because it had some obvious flaws in it anyways. This is for sure a yes vote, but there are several things you could have done to save a bit more time. 1. Getting the cure spell before bone dungeon would have shortened the fight with the bone dragon. Cure does more damage to him than the bombs do. 2. Putting the secondary character on Automatic will save several frames per battle, I found that you can put tristam on automatic thoughout the entire bone dungeon and he will always attack the way you want him to. 3. This was a big one. In my movie I dicovered a way to get infinite seeds from the old lady in windia. However this trick CAN be done in fireburg too. You can buy seeds in fireburg and never have to worry about getting more ever again. 4. Jumping over the barrel after getting the cure spell should be faster than walking around it. 5. I do not know this for sure, but supoosedly you can use the cure spell on the Dark King twice as long as you use a different attack for a couple rounds inbetween. 6. Also I dont know for sure, but it may have been possible to manipulate pazuzu to appear on the top floor right when you enter the tower, thus eliminating the need to talk to him on the third floor. All in all these improvements would not add up to that much time anyways. I am very impressed with your luck manipulation throughout the game. Your rerecord count shows just how much testing is needed when trying to manipulate effectivly. I actually tried to redo my movie, but got burnt out trying to manipulate everying better. And now that this run has been made, there is no reason for me to try making a new one :) Very nice run, Yes vote.

*smiles* Thank you. In watching my movie again I did catch a few of these things. You're right in that they would save almost no time...probably a couple seconds at most.

Yes. So much faster at all. Great work. Have not think, that so much can the old one be improved. Sure the Cure spell was a bad error. But you say yourself this save only 1 minute. So 11 minutes most only for luck manipulation. Great work. Sure Yes vote here.

This is a pretty great run. I highly doubt there will be another 10 minutes shaved off of this one, but I look forward to seeing somebody try to play this game slightly more quickly using the second character in auto mode someday. Heh: insane FFMQ GameFAQs post Edit: The topic was purged and the ID was invalid. The above link now goes to GameFAQs FFMQ board. For future reference it was a guy saying he beat the game 100% in 50 minutes. I asked how he did it faster than DonamerDragon and he didn't reply.

Doesn't the claw have better attributes for magic than the bombs? Having that selected might help some. When fighting Dark King it makes 16000HP difference... Edit: I checked the video a few days ago and it was quite nice to see this and that. But why wasn't Cure used to kill Dark King? A good hit deals 32000 of damage.

Long time I haven't played that game. I don't know if the strategy is good but randomness is well manipulated.
