Someone on the IRC had a good idea: Do a game in parts, with each week being one part, and starting next week, people must start from the end of the previous week's winner's movie. This will create a join effort speed run (unless one person really goes to town and wins all 6 weeks), in which a person who doesnt have much time can contribute without having to do the entire game. After the final week, I will submit the movie to be published. Platform: Sega Genesis Game: Castlevania - Bloodlines (U) [!].bin This week's goal: Fastest time for level one. The instant the victory music begins to play will mark the end of the level. (I am using this because I do not know if getting the orb at the end while in the air will make the game wait for you to land first or not before beginning the victory music) Options: Please use the following options when starting- play on expert mode (To get the expert mode, at the title screen press Up, Up, Down, Down, left, right, left, right, B, and then A. A chime will indicate you got it. Then go into options and set difficulty to expert). Also, please play as John Morris for this week (I may do a Eric LaCarde for another time if no one does it before then). All time saving methods (taking damage to save time, etc) are valid. Last week's winner will be announced at midnight EST (10.5 hours post time). Good luck!

this would be a great lead in to someone actually completing this game.

Hopefully by the end of this 6 weeks, the game will be completed well enough to be published.

Maybe this one first, then a NES, and after that a SNES, and a Gameboy after that or something. ;D

I did an NES one last week. http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3315 there are still about 8 hours left if you want to submit something. That should be more then enough time.

Whew, it was for Whip Guy. Then I have at least six weeks to finish a Spear Dude movie. Better get started... ----------- EDIT: Can anyone explain exactly how the spell book works? Sometimes when I pick it up I get a few extra crystals, sometimes my weapon goes blue and I get a big ball as a special weapon. Which one I get seems to depend on what special weapon I have equipped, but I'm not sure. Is the blue whip worth getting? It doesn't seem to damage the first sub-boss any more than the regular whip...

Blue whip is a bit stronger then the regular best whip, and does an extra bar of damager every 2 or 3 hits, I beleive (and comes with an awesome -but costly- secondary weapon). I have no idea what decides what the book gives you (I always thought it was a little pouch). But the blue whip is definately the best thing to get out of it. Also, you loose it as soon as you get hit.

Okay, thanks. :) I did some more testing on the first boss: with blue whip: 12 hits with the one you get after getting hit once: 14 hits So the blue whip is indeed stronger, but not by a lot. The first two hits take off two bars of life with both whips, that's why I missed it the first time. Is anyone on it except for me? Competition is nice.

Are you at the first main boss, or the miniboss where the old nes castlevania first boss is? Or to be more clear: are you at the hellhound or the reanimated armour?

Ah, sorry. By first boss I meant the hellhound, even thought it's technically just a sub-boss. I haven't tested against the armor.

I did a run and got the red ball at 3:10:56. I'd upload it, but it desynced. Imagine my lividness. EDIT: Fixed it! Holy crap I love hexediting. Edit again: Anyway, I don't know if I know everything about this game, but I figure it's got some good strategy anyway. Edit X3: Some errors I've noticed are pausing during the white skeleton dragon, and some missed hits on the final boss (eek, that's bad).

Heh, my movie desynced too and I managed to fix it by hexediting. It was just transposed three frames too early. About your movie: not bad at all, but you made one mistake which will disqualify your movie unless you fix it - you didn't actually select expert mode in the options, you only made it available with the code. This is obvious in the cellar, there are no flying ghosts there like there are in expert mode. The tactic you used was very smart, I didn't know you could skip all the whip upgrades and still get the blue whip. So if it's any consolidation I also have to redo my movie. :)

I wondered about this. I didn't realize you had to select it after the code enabled it. I kept playing through thinking "this doesn't seem too expert-ish". Ah well. Gave me a couple fun hours. About the blue whip: if you get hit after getting it without whip upgrades, you automatically have the longer upgraded whip - not that it matters, cuz getting hit is probably bad.

I'm starting to realize that I probably won't be able to finish this before the time limit runs out... or if I do it would be very close, late saturday. So I'm uploading my run when I get home for anyone to continue or just steal the tricks from. (But it doesn't seem like anyone else is working on this - no?) I'm up to the big swinging blade and I think I'm about 3 seconds ahead of JXQ (adding on time for going into the options menu). EDIT: Well, interest seems to be limited, but here is my partial run at least: http://133an.sytes.net/~truncated/castle.gmv Do with it what thou wilst.

I have seen a bit of interest in a few people on the IRC; its too bad you won't be able to finish; you may still want to finish your run in case no one beats your time, you can still win the weekly competition. As for the winning run; if it doesn't look flawless or near flawless, I might not continue with this game next week, since I was hoping for a complete run to be made and submitted for publishing. But time will tell.

truncated, if you have time, you should definitely do a full run of this game. no one else really seems interested in it, but that doesnt mean it doesnt deserve to be completed.

So, only one person submitted a complete run. Congradulations JXQ. Because of lack of interest, it seems, I will put the next level on hold (consider it an extended timeframe) EDIT: I just realize that run wasnt on expert. So, I guess no one wins. Or Truncated wins. Or something.

I place the blame on the fact you chose whip guy over spear dude.

No one wins. His run wasn't on expert and mine didn't finish the first level, so no movies following the rules were submitted. Walk over, I would call it.

Yeah I feel kinda dumb for not fully reading the instructions. But if Truncated was already three seconds ahead of me on a harder difficulty, then my run definitely missed something regardless. Yay for no one wins!

Finally finished, only a couple of weeks too late. Time for red ball is 3:03:46. Get it here: http://133an.sytes.net/~truncated/castle.gmv (same link as last time) There's probably a few frames to squeeze out of the very first screen, and possibly from the boss. I'm not very happy with the scene with the big swinging blades either, but I'm not about to redo it. I've seen the run desync at the bone worm, that is, I miss and don't kill it... but he misses me too and the run carries on fine anyway. o_O The crystals don't take any time to count down, and you keep them for next level, so it's a good idea to get as many as possible all the time. Level 2 boss can be done a lot faster if you have enough crystals. If anyone wants to continue this, talk to me. Other opinions are also welcome.
