Statistics can't be positive or negative by definition (not to mention that the page already includes some of the "negative" criteria, anyway), so I say go for it. The more information, the merrier. :)

Well, the Movie Statistics page already includes things like "Least downloaded .avi" and "smallest amount of data downloaded", which aren't really that positive if you think about it. Anyway, this was just an idea I had, I won't cry myself to sleep if it's not implemented. :P

It's perfectly possible, and actually any editor could do it (because the module supports ordering from biggest to smallest and the other way around). However, as someone said, I don't know if that's such a good idea because I feel it kind of mocks the authors of those movies... Btw, I added a simple check to the module: If the same movie id appears twice in a row in a list, it ignores the second appearance. This should fix the needless repetitions.

I think it would be morbidly funny to list lowest entertainment value... But then, it does mock the authors. Still, the authors know that the rating is low. If we make it show only non-obseleted movies, then it might motivate authors to improve their movies.

Perhaps a poll should be posted?

I fail to see that as something the author shouldn't be ready for beforehand, especially since low entertainment rating depends on a poor game choice in nearly all cases. That shouldn't prevent statistics from having place, it would help the others notice lowest rated movies faster and possibly try to improve them regardless of who the current author is (see also: Jaws).

Do you see anything obsolete on that list?

The number of individual players is missing from the general statistics. Also, it might be interesting to have the average movie rating per system.

Interesting. I'm guessing the stronger the system, the more the rating. But it would be opposite for technical (hard to optimize 3D games) so it balances out. Would it be possible to have some graphs on the page? Of AVI length, rating, etc.

If I had to speculate (and speculating is fun), I would guess N64 would have slightly lower average entertainment rating than Genesis. SNES and NES would destroy them. Game boy, no idea. Probably sucks too, but not as much as N64 and Genesis.

Also remember that the NES and SNES dominate the "lowest ratings" lists, so it all evens out.

Platform Average Sample Size
-----------------------------------
NES 6.5444 216
SNES 6.8108 93
SG 6.2452 62
GB 6.9512 41
N64 7.0857 7
Probably contains errors here and there (did this somewhat quickly).

Haha, wow, Genesis runs indeed do need improvement. >_> I'm also surprised by GB's performance in your chart.

Sure, as soon as someone suggests what kind of graphs and their measurements. If it's a 2D plot, then the y-axis would have eg. avi lengths, and the x-axis would have... what?

y = amount of movies having roughly this length?

In other words, a histogram.

I have commented on this before. While most movies fall into a more or less small range of lengths (and other parameters), the total range of lengths is very wide. This would mean that to show all the movies in one graph the resolution would have to be quite coarse. For example, if each bar represented one minute (ie. the first bar would represent movies between 0 and 60 seconds long, the second one movies between 60 and 120 seconds, etc), the last bar in the graph would be at minute 261. Most movies would be packed between the 0-45 minute range (only 17% of the total width of the graph) and the rest would consist of mostly individual 1-sized bars here and there. In other words, the first fifth of the graph would have a tight bell curve, and four fifths would consist of sparse tiny bars distributed here and there. I'm not sure this would be very informative.

Eh, you could always just give ranges: 0-2, 2-4, 5-8, 8-15, 15-60, 60-*, for example. Granted, this is very, very large ranges, but you get the idea.

I think instead of a strict histogram maybe you maybe should try a convolution where you weight each item based off a bell curve. (Basically like a moving average) Histograms with sparse data have the problem where you can get very different shapes with small changes in the data.
This signature is much better than its previous version.

Basically, when a movie improves on a published movie by a lot, it gets listed. There would be two listings: Percentage of the old run's time Elapsed time. Might be interesting to see where huge improvements had been made. [Edit by Bisqwit: This suggestion does not deserve its own thread. Moving it into the thread that talks about the Movie Statistics page.]

Relative to an immediate obsoletion, or relative to the very first movie published? Plus there are a few issues. Super Mario 64 might be a candidate for the best improvement due to the 15 stars skipped. In contrast, the collection of 16 star movies alone might be a more meaningful statistic, but the grouping of the 1-star run into it would throw it off.

Another issue is a "category or goal change" obsoletion, such as Mortal Kombat 2 or Zanac. Actually I'm not sure if the warp in Zanac counts as a cheat or not, if not then it doesn't have this issue.

I support the idea. Category change cases might be solved by having their classes compared directly (if they differ, the successor movie doesn't get listed). Improvement should be counted by the percentage of the time saved over the direct predecessor.

"Smallest improvement" might also be interesting, to see what games get "frame-warred". Of course, it's tricky to phrase that in a positive way.
