There are a few levels where you are painfully close to getting 1 second less (oil ocean 2 comes to mind, although it looks extremely optimized and i have no suggestions, casino 2 comes to mind too), it is literally so close it almost makes me cry. Honestly I don't think anyone is going to save much time off of this, as every level is just very very optimal. Isn't it possible to just edit in an improvement to aquatic 2 (there would be no change in the bonus amount or anything else so no problems there that i see), not familiar with the rules about that here and all. Btw, how did you find the ar2 glitch? Just randomly happened to me and mike89 confirmed it randomly happened to him as well, then I got lucky and replicated it in real time. One question about emerald hill 1, have you tested the bottom path at all (I suck at frame advance so can't give an example)? By spindashing into the spring and then slope jumping, you can get some serious speed going. If there was any way to keep this speed up and use various other optimizations, it might allow a faster route to come about (maybe doing what you do in emerald hill 2 with the loops you could also do with the loops here?). I'm sure you've already tested this though and found it doesn't save time, but just throwing out some suggestions

Hitting a boss 30+ frames later than the fastest possible time, with a 0-frame margin of error, when randomness is known not to be involved, is exactly the sort of condition likely to be go untested when making a TAS. I only found out about that peculiar bug from you finding out about it. I tested that path in Emerald Hill 2 extensively, and a lot of different combinations of paths. I think it should be possible to save another time unit there somehow, as bouncing from enemy to enemy is not the fastest form of travel, but it avoided so many obstacles that all of the other paths I tried were slower. It is possible to jump at almost any curved ground that meets an edge to fall through it and possibly start zipping, but I knew this the entire time and still couldn't find any place where it would be useful. There are no rules against minor improvements, but I'd be disappointed by such a small improvement as 4 or 5 seconds when most of it comes from a single trick on a boss and other possibilities for further improvement haven't been full expored. Usually a complete redo would give a better overall result even if it seems like all the tricks have already been found.

Knowing you, Nitsuja, you'd probably annihilate this game just like you annihilated Sonic 3 & Knuckles. But how about an All-Chaos-Emeralds run?

Whoops. Heh heh, I forgot. But here's another idea; how about a Tails run?

I don't think Tails can fly on command in Sonic 2, so it would be rather pointless.

A tails run would be pointless, as he can't fly. A knuckles run would be cool, as he has a lot of route possibilities... if only there were a way to get on top of the loop in hill top 1 to use knuckles route (the one that leads to the underground section) with sonic... that would save a bundle

But lots of people said that a Knuckles run wouldn't be too different from a Sonic run and now look at it!

I tried that, and it was very close to being possible, but I think even for Knuckles that route would be slower than Sonic's route in a TAS.

Check out this, its a gmv (no optimization at all) of a maybe time saving glitch in oil ocean 2 (though not likely, since the level is already optimized well, but you never know): http://files.filefront.com//;6469880;;/ btw, I hate filefront, but don't know anywhere else to put it. bear with me on that. You would start moving so fast and the game gets so glitchy that it might possibly save time. I've got it to go 3 times, but you start to jump above the screen and it brings you back down and gets rid of the glitchiness. Still fun to play around with!

http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php [edit] Also, Nitsuja was aware of that glitch when he did his run. Though it might save time if you can use that to go left past the start of the level.

Microstorage. I uploaded your .gmv there (link). Interesting glitch you got there, stanski, though I'm still not sure if setting up won't take more time than it saves.

Yea, I'm guaranteeing it doesn't save any time now... by the time you even do the thing twice its going to be 14 seconds gone, and nitsuja was already in the boss chamber at 20 seconds... bleh, he really did find every shortcut in this game.

This would make a nice TAS, but I might be working on one soon and I have one question: Is the debug, level select and all-emeralds codes legal in a TAS? It isn't a cheat code, you do the stuff with sound test. -Neo Shinryu

*slaps forehead* Sorry, I didn't really expect all the Sonic games to be in one thread. Should I tell a moderator, or administrator to lock or delete? -Neo Shinryu

... I just found a way to save ~400 frames on Metropolis 3, and there are a couple other places that can be done faster. (CP2 at the start, AR2 and some other bosses, perhaps some other acts of metropolis zone...) I think I'll make this a project once I've got Gens 10 done.

Of course I'm probably the person most looking forwards to this! I really hope you can find some more tricks/speed ups!

Its probally already known but heres a zip I found in the second stage although I doesn't seem be very useful, unless you can do something useful first by going backwards. I recorded from the end of Nitsuja's movie. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1465866871/Sonic%20The%20Hedgehog%202%20%28W%29%20%5B%21%5D.gmv
