I take it that pirate_sephiroth (and everyone else) stopped working on this run? :\

I haven't seen lipucd, zeroseven, or whomever else post in a while, and pirate_sephiroth is busy with AoS all soul run. I'd assume that's a fair statement.

He said he will pick it up soon, though.

Yeah, as soon as I buy a new motherboard. EDIT: In the meantime, you can check this new WIP.

It died, and it will be resuscitated back to life by yours truly once I'm done with MM. I made various tests, and was able to make more than 100 frames of improvement in Pirate's WIP in different places, like: -Improving the first stage by 6 frames (but failing to keep that lead*) -Improving the boss fight of stage 1 by 19 frames, still wayyyyy more room for improvement -Improving the ascent up the pyramid in stage 2 after the chick saving -Improving the golem fight by 30ish frames -Improving the pink fight by 50ish frames And those are the only places I've tried so far. I have a huge hunch way more places can be improved as well. The WIP was very optimal, so I was quite surprised to have saved that much time. So yep. May as well have gotten that out there. I am still immensely surprised a run hasn't been completed yet, and I've always been wanting to do a run for this fast paced game. So I will. In the future. Stay tuned! Edit: I think I found the source of where I kept losing frames. I'll do a few tests.

Yeah, nice improvements... but I didn't like the first elevator in the run you sent me. You killed the enemies way too fast... we can't even see them. I hope you fixed that.

I did/will. In fact, for the .vbm I sent you I focused way too hard on killing the enemies as fast as possible (also it was a test). No matter how many drones are killed or how fast, the elevator stops on the same frame, so that was an easy thing to miss. In the final movie it will be way more entertaining. I did find the source of where I was losing frames. Apparently I wasn't starting a slide soon enough in each new room. Fixed that up, improved all the rooms where I missed it. Earth 1 complete (youtube!); 134 frames faster than Pirate's WIP in total so far. Edit: aaaaand.... redoing Earth 1 to save 1 frame (pre boss), and to get more energy (a powerup dropped in the first elevator auto scroller, which gives me 50% full bar energy) for supercharged laser shot to use for the 2nd level. Edit: 492 frames ahead at the defeat of Pink, redoing Moon 1 to gain more.

Comicalflop. All I have to say about that "RANDOM" power up is... You know what happens when you try to hit an enemy projectile with your knife, don't you...?

Lemme guess... cause a power up to drop? Well, fiddle sticks. Guess this means I'm back at Earth 1, eh?

Rather, because pirate_sephiroth likes to be obnoxious. :)

Off Topic much? 32 frames saved on bringing the boss's HP to 0, but 12 frames saved on Earth 1 overall because the boss was lower to the ground at the moment of death (he has to go up when he dies). Too bad pirate's camhack dabblings didn't work, but I like the end result. Hex editing doesn't seem to work very well due to lag (good thing there's only like 7 stages so redoing stuff won't be tiresome), and I need to restart Moon 1's autoscroller because I tested that only killing the helicopters speeds things up, which leaves me more room to show off for the other enemies. I have a few ideas about saving even more time on the rest of Earth 1. Edit: to those who care, Moon 2 done.

Because I [sarcasm]loooooooooooooooooooooove[/sarcasm] mindfucking everyone, I got as far as 33% done with Moon 5 (so very close to the end of the run!), then.... restarted all the way back at Moon 1 because I want to fix a few mistakes. I was, by the end of Pirate's WIP, about 18 seconds faster.

Long overdue update. I just beat Orange in Moon 2 using a new strategy, and I'm currently 158 frames (2.6 seconds) ahead of my old attempt. Woah, I really have been working on this movie a long time.... huh.

So Comical, what's the status on this run? I love me some Gunstar Heroes.

I love me some Gunstar too, unfortunately Adelikat made it possible for me to play with my new toy. I'm like at the beginning of Moon 3, just at the part where that first train shows up. I had saved some time using a new strategy for fighting that first wave of enemies. But, progress on the run goes much quicker when I don't have to do autoscrollers, especially autoscrollers that I have already completed in the past. So things are kinda stalled while I perform insta-surgery on unsuspecting patients. Sit tight, this will get done. Eventually. Honest.

LOL it seems that quite a few players, including me, just threw away their unfinished WIPs and began to play the new toy as soon as it was released :p
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do

Long overdue update. FINALLY finished Moon 3, and saved 3 seconds compared to my old run in the process (woot!). I may, for entertainment purposes, separately TAS every single room in Moon 4, just to see what they're like. Edit: Ok, so now the new movie is 1,363 frames (22 seconds) faster than Pirate's old attempt (an additional 2+ seconds is possible, but I use the 2 seconds to save 6 seconds in the Black Fight.) So, I would have saved 24.) This is compared to the 18 seconds faster that my old movie was. Edit: almost done with Moon 5!

GUNSTAR. Link to video User movie #28848621944006843 Damn this is fun to run. This is just a quick test, but I may attempt a full improvement to the published run in the future if I'm still having this much fun with it.

Glad to see interest in Gunstar! I do think my published movie is improvable in a few places (my estimate is maybe around 10-20 seconds?), and I'd love to see frame optimizations after 6 years, but I'm 95% positive that Blue is the optimal character to pick. The differences are almost all aesthetic except for their lasers; Red's laser shoots out in puffs and the super version recharges energy super quickly, however Blue's laser only requires one frame of holding out the blaster for the entire laser to shoot out. I'm making up these numbers, but let's say Red's laser puffs each do like 1 damage, and if you hold fire for 6 frames, the 6 puffs will do 6 damage total, but if you hold fire for 1 frame as Blue, his one laser shoots out and the entire laser deals 6 damage, and you have 5 free frames of doing other actions. This is useful for example in situations where you want to start firing at a boss who has just appeared. I think there's like only one boss in the entire game in the last level where you have a slight advantage playing as Red instead of Blue, but that's it. There's a lot of intricate details involved with movement (such as extending a slide with an uppercut to gain 4 extra frames of maximum speed when exiting a room) and boss-fighting strategies. Because you can start each boss fight with an exploding-fire shot, then a super exploding fire shot, and then use any number of uppercuts and kicks to regain energy, and all these movements affect the boss's RNG patterns, you could redo a boss fight differently and save or lose frames every single time. The game is super fun to TAS, for sure. My one piece of advice would be to try and do some of the autoscrollers differently than I did, since I sun the camera in circles way too much.

Yeah, I'd be switching to Blue for an improvement run. Just wanted to see how Red handled, because damn if I don't love that graceful slide. The improvement will also have a lot more work put into optimizing movement and boss fights and such: Normally I'd at least have the run I'm improving open alongside along with a number of values, but this was just a personal interest check so I didn't bother with the light research. But yeah, Gunstar needs the most love possible. Sometimes I wonder if anything can be done with the original Genesis TAS... But that's a story for a different day. Or TASer. Probably a different TASer. EDIT: User movie #28903289443097871 Further testing with Blue, haven't started planning ahead yet. Most of the improvement over the published run is on the first screen.
