I like shooters so I've considered trying one of those for my first TAS. Before I start, though, would you people be more intrested in a run that kills enemies as early or as late as possible?

Personally I prefer to see the enemies and not just their remains. So I'd vote for late kills.

I agree with Walker Boh. Especially in a game like Gradius where you can get a lot of speed upgrades to fly around really fast, you should use that to your advantage. Fly around the enemies, loop around them, or whatever. Try to do impressive stuff while they're still there. Morimoto's Gradius movie is a perfect example of what you can do when the enemies are around. Of course, it doesn't hurt to kill one or two enemies as soon as they appear, but I think that doing that all of the time is a bad idea. Good luck with that run by the way, and remember, don't miss any shots! :)

Cutting it close is always more entertaining than keeping the enemies far away from you. It's the same reason a damage run is more entertaining than a damage-free run, since it takes effort (and often skill) to figure out how close you can cut it.

I agree with previous three posts. The bigger mess you can create and still successfully resolve, the more impressive it is.

I wouldn't mind seeing it, but it isn't fun when every shot kills something right at the border. Let enemies at least get on the screen first so that there is more appreciation of what you're doing.

Late kills it is. Now I just need a weekend or two to have a go at it...

Also I'd prefer to see Gradius 2, since I think Morimotos Gradius 1 movie already is very good.

I'll keep that in mind too. Gradius II and kill enemies just before lag manifests.

Agree on that. People have started on Gradius II but never really got any traction. You have to do this almost perfectly because auto-scroll shooters usually do not make for good timeattacks. "Vulcan Venture" is an excellent game and it's too bad it's fairly obscure for a major Konami franchise...the graphics and sound are top-of-the-line for an NES game (especially an '88 one.) They lost a lot less than you'd expect porting it from the arcades (although I wish they had the old Crystal World music.)

To be honest, for an autoscrolling game like Gradius, it doesn't really matter to me if one movie is faster than the other... entertainment value is what matters most I think.

It's not bad, but not new or interesting, either. It seems way too easy so far. Maybe use the '?' to de-upgrade your ship? It's easier to be creative and entertaining when you actually need to use the Options and the different weapons, and plan to be in certain places at certain times in order to kill everything/stay alive.
please notice particularly around frame 13730 ;)
Yes, that was pretty good. :D Ahem... Now, I certainly shouldn't be saying this in a thread specifically about Gradius, but I think you ought to consider running a different game, like Darius Twin for the SNES, or Crying for the Genesis. They're 2-player, the graphics and sound are better, and unlike Gradius, not everyone has seen movies of them already.

I have done two gradius movies already and I have decided to make a third one. The first movie a did got bad critique and the second one was now rejected ; (. So I would really appreciate if some people or someone could put me in the right direction. First of all: Who think this is a good game choice? short WIP: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1244/Diman

Well for starters, read adelikat's message in your previous Gradius submission. After that... maybe there is nothing that needs to be said. Edit: What avatar? Edit 2: Topic merged to the existing topic. Next time, use the Search to see if there is already a topic about the game!

Diman, I watched your wip but I doesn't see much difference between it and your previous submission. My only advice is to watch the wip I have posted earlier in this forum.
