Quite a journey to make an N64 game. First of all, this would have never been completed without the help from everyone on the message board and in IRC. More of a thank you to MWL for providing a walkthough, via webpage located: http://mwlin.freehostia.com/wiki/index.php?title=TAS/Speed. Thank you to AKA, Acryte, YautjaElder, and everyone on SDA forum and NESVideos forum for much of needed help.

A short description on what went on: OH NO! Dreams of soon-to-be Deja Vu & The Great Deku Tree is in need of help!
Kokiri Forest - Fastest route in getting rupees so far. No more diagonal walking unless needed in certain areas for a small distance.
Inside the Deku Tree - Ahh, the 1st dungeon. In the room with the Skullita and web on the ground, there is a new method there which will take off 4 minutes or so in the next run. I got lucky in the Pre-boss room.
To skip a lot of backtracking, there is a part where Link grabs a chicken and jumpslashes over the Guerdo fence to go to the Spirit Temple.
Haunted Wasteland - There is a poe that navigates you through the desert, but with brilliant skill, Link surpases that.
Spirit Temple - What a fun 1/2 of a dungeon where Iron Knuckle meets his doom for the 1st time! Also, there is a way to get the Mirror Shield early, maybe it will get used in a future run.
  • Had just enough of a heart remaining to die upon impact for a death/warp
Fishing Pond - Swimmin into the middle of the pond after catching the biggest fish and holding Z & R while swimming to the owner will give you the Golden Scale, needed to dive deep and get the bottle. There is a way to skip King Zora now without the bottle, maybe it will get used later on.
Hyrule Castle - The 1st of 2 seamwalks. Seamwalks are tough when you start out, but practice makes it easier. The sidehopping past the guards was fun because they just look to lazy to say anything to you.
Zora's Fountain - There was said to be a way to roll into Jabu-Jabu's mouth at the perfect pixel angle, but after many attempts, I gave up and did the next easiest thing, which is jumpslash on him to enter.
Inside Lord Jabu-Jabu's Belly - Fun dungeon with a stabbing bomb boost for the Mini-boss skip.
Dodongo's Cavern - 85% of this dungeon was skipped due to the bombchu's lighting the eyes. No one could prove if it was possible to light both eyes with 1.
Death Mountain Trail - The 2nd and last seamwalk to get to the Great Fairy Fountain and jumpslash through the mountain side to enter since I had no bombchu's.
Market - At the Market, I went bombchu bowling for the bomb bag upgrade to carry 30 bombs. Even though I didnt get the bombs, when I become an adult, they are automatically filled!
Temple of Time - OH NO! Ganon, The King of Evil, has followed me into the Temple of Time!
Graveyard - The dead Graveyard keep is wanting to race me in his grave! He likes my style so he gives me the Hookshot! Back in the Graveyard, the Poe boost was never accomplished after thousands of tries. So a new method was discovered!
Shadow Temple - The funnest watching Temple of them all! This is where I pick up the hover boots because they are needed for the other Temple's (Forest and Spirit). Bongo Bongo met his final beat.
Lost Woods - Since Mido did not get any taller, I might as well just backflip over him!
Sacred Forest Meadow - To skip most of the annoying enemies in this area, I used a "stored ground jump" to get to the top of the ledge and hover my way on down.
Forest Temple - Only thing needed out of here is the Fairy Bow. Once I got that, I played the Requiem of Spirit and went to the Spirit Temple to finish the 2nd and final Temple.
Spirit Temple - Some obstacles were in my way because I did not have the Longshot, but just a few seconds were lost in climbing and such. The witches could have been beaten a little faster but I could not position them so they would not move, got frustrated and gave up! However, I did stab Twinrova to death.
Inside Ganon's Castle - ALL SAGES UNITE! The most desynching part of the game is here in the Castle. Redo, after redo was put into this, but finally got it done!
  • Going down the tower, I only needed to keep Zelda moving to where she needed to go
On Ganon, there is a place behind his foot where if you stay and don't move, he'll just glide you around like a merry-go-round.
Final blow on Ganon is at frame 539871, 2 Hours 29.8Minutes. End of movie is at frame 552279, 2 Hours 33.4 Minutes.
Enjoy the video!

Some things that I want to point out: Guano already did a million of rerecording when his movies desynched, and when he fixed some better routes and tricks etc. Either he didn't care to remake anymore because he was tired of it, or els he wanted this to be done so he can start a new version, which he is going to do. It has taken Guano a lot of hours making this movie, many would never even think of the challange. Sure I agree with TSA that it could be improved and that he could do it in his speedrun. I don't doubt it. New tricks are coming up on this game all the time. And if Guano had waited untill they are "all" found out, this run hadn't showed before the end of this year. Also, even if many people wants a movie to be published it doesn't mean the movie is good. One example: Ego Buff's Oracle of Seasons TAS. 71% wanted it to be published. And if you ask me, that TAS wasn't more great than my speedrun of the same game. And that was noteable mistakes, he takes unneccesary damage, used bad routes, missed tonnes of small, and big, tricks etc. But still people wanted it to be published. And actually, I have no idea why...

TSA, I think you need to calm down since you're the one whose getting all worked up about it. I'm just happy that Guano finished it, you have to remember that the whole Kokiri Forest/ Deku Tree stuff started out as a testrun. I think you just seem annoyed that this run was "sneaked in" before you could finish yours. Anyway an improvment is on its way and hopefully its possible to break 2 hours. One final point, not publishing this run because of more up to date tricks being available would be of the upmost stupidity.

TSA simply came off as argumentative and a little arrogant, but I dont think anyone reacted the way they should've =/ this is basically what I saw TSA yells TSSAAAAA!!!! at everyone, but in a nice way. Anger Fist thrusts an angry fist through TSA TSA goes TSSSAAAAA!!! but in a mean way >=( GuanoBowl prepares to dump guano on TSA >_> *Other unoriginal play on words* About the cam hack: I thought that the view point was OK overall but it would have been nice to see a larger portion of the world he enters. It would simply affect the visuals of the game though, yes? I because when I think different camera angels I think that forward becomes backwards and vice versa.

now that I have time to write, I will. TSA: you are a very good OoT player, probably one of the best if you have a world record on a console. This is completely different from your run in different ways. This run isnt perfect, yet far from it, I know that and I am sure everyone else knows that. And the biggest mistake comes from The Forest in all directions. AND if I can remember right, back in a thread that you created with your 4:57 run on OoT. People did nothing but go WOW, OMG, HOLY SHIT! Didnt that make you feel good. Now am I taking the sunshine from you? Are you pissed off that from a couple of mistakes this run got published? TSA, take some Midol, kick back and watch your favorite TV Show/Movie. Im not here to bash you or anything but to just ask why you are trying to raise the god damn roof where there is no fucking roof?
Change my sig. again, and I will murder your pet fish.

Not really here to flame or argue about anything, but I want to let you know about the difficulties we have when we TAS. so that you can understand why Guano did not use some of the new tricks discovered while he made his run. First let me introduce myself, or rather, what I do. I play StarFox, and I have absolutely no knowledge or experience in OoT. However, I do have experience using Mupen, and some experience in TASing as well. With that said, I've been playing StarFox for about... almost a year, to be honest. Know how much progress I made? I'm still not done with the first level. Five revisions, substantial efforts on new tactics/movement, and stuff like that, totaling around 15k rerecords or so. The reason it took a year was because I took everyone's advice and immediately changed things in my run if it would benefit it. The result? Hours were immediately lost as I had to restart the whole run and redo everything I did with the new trick/method. As you pointed out and inquired, "Why weren't the newer tricks used?" which proved that walking backwards was "a waste of time". Had he taken your advice, the entire run would, in order to achieve fastest time, have to start all over again. HUNDREDS of hours would be lost immediately. Furthermore, Guano's run was first meant to be only a test run, as a demonstration/concept thing for others to look at. However, it was "too good" to only be a demo, so it was decided to submit it as a run, even with any problems it had. As a console speedrunner, I'm sure you can understand that sometimes you will have a few "tries" on a certain segment, just to get a feel for it, but it turns out you had a REALLY good one, so you just save it, even with some errors, you know? But what if he DID restart? Now for us, restarting is a lot harder than for regular console speedrunners. We only do one "real" run, from start to finish. Speedrunners will play, maybe make a mistake or two, and realize that he/she needs to restart and try again. So while a good run for speedrunners may have taken 50-100 tries (or more, I wouldn't know), we spend MUCH more as we have to optimize and be much more in depth with our precision. Whereas you may just get hit by a monster, we can't accept/tolerate it if it can be avoided. I'm pretty sure YOU wouldn't also tolerate it since you know we're using emulators, so why should we be sloppy and take hits? Miss shots? Have movement errors/problems? So when the new walking method was found midway of his run, he couldn't have gone back and redone it all. He COULD'VE been like me and redo the whole first level and use the new method, but he decided (and I understand, since OoT is 2 hours and a half or so, while Starfox is only an hour tops) that it would take too long, and the effort in doing so was too much, because after all, we are also human and have limits. So while I understand that it's not a perfect movie (even the author acknowledges this), it is still a good one nonetheless, regardless of all the mistakes because it is HARD to do a run (I'm sure you know that) and not just to do a run, but to do it WELL and well enough that it is worth submitting. Cheers? ^^ Edit: Oh yeah. Good job Guano, great run =]

The goal of a TAS is to strive for perfection, not to be perfect. Making a 2 hour run is hard work, and not only new tricks are found during the making of it, but the player himself will learn how to play the game with better optimization. If the player restarts everytime a mistake is found, he has to often remake everything, since editing early parts of the video isn't possible without desyncing. I hope that clears things up. This isn't the last OoT TAS there will be, it's the first one.

Isn't it possible with hex-editing?

It's not even remotely possible for a game like this.

When did "hex-edit" become a buzz-word around here that means "magically fix"? It seems to be catching on, but I invite anyone who thinks that way to give it a shot, or at least read the hex-editing page. (I don't mean to pick on you, nfq. There was another instance in IRC today, as well.)

Hexediting is pretty easy. I bet you don't know a lot about it, or else you wouldn't complain. You probably get someone else to do the magical fixes for you, don't you?

Yes I do. Shamesnake. In other news, the commentary is fully complete. Big thanks to Spacecow for hosting yet another large file for me. This is all one MP3 and should sync with the published video.

Those guards were so stunned by seeing that little kid move backwards so fast that they didn't catch him. deserved to be published, loved the bomb use!

Well written, Vidar. Personally I'm just confused as to why there is any complaining at all. I might have missed something but I thought it would seem better to have something instead of nothing atleast and most importantly, if better can be done... Just do it and upload, geez. This is the best we have now and that would be the best we'll have then. It's not like he's taken the single diamond in the world and shaped it like a three-legged dog when people would have wanted a regular one, he's just taken one of the infinite supply of diamonds so if you're not happy, take your own or wait for some one else to shape theirs...

The run is amazing and all, but it was quite boring because of all that backwalking, JXQ's amazing commentary made me watch through it.

Please do explain how not walking backwards would've made the run better. I just can't figure out why it would.
