OK, just to complete the trifecta, I'll start a topic for this one. Now, I would suggest doing the American version of this game simply because it's harder than the Japanese one. Only thing that's missing gameplay-wise IIRC is Ash, which isn't really a factor for two reasons: 1. The fight against him isn't hard at all anyway. 2. If you could play as him, he would be an awesome character for fast times but a snoozefest to watch; punching is just about all he can do. Now, then, here are other characters besides Ash whom I wouldn't recommend using... Super Zan: Can only be used via a Pro Action Replay code. Super Skate: Punch combo is way too good, would be very effective but boring. Shiva: Also extremely boring, just keep doing his B+C for a damaging infinite combo. A shame too, really cool character otherwise. Roo: Clearly the worst character for a timeattack I think, as he does no damage compared to the others. Dr. Zan: Surely the worst of the four normal characters, he's rather lacking in damage and priority and can't use weapons as well as others can. And here's one character which I'm not sure about - Super Axel: As with Super Skate, there is a legit way to play as him. Difference is, IIRC his only advantage over normal Axel is a better defensive special move. Something else which I think should be banned is using a 6-button controller config to perform the improved versions of dash attacks. As you acquire stars throughout the game, your dash attack "levels up", which I think is pretty neat; with a 6-button controller, you can just perform them all from the start of the game. More boring that way, I think... Hm, maybe I'll post more later... -Josh

Getting Super Axel (or Ash or Shiva) depends on doing a secret button combination. Those demos that have used such earlier have not been accepted. Roo should be ok, if you get him by beating the clown. But then you have to die, which is pretty inefficient. The extra star dash moves however are in the manual (at least the japanese one) and as such should be legit. For beating this game quick, my guess would be Axel or Blaze. Axel has the beat-all jumpkick in this game (despite what the stars might say) and good ground, but Blaze is faster and has better grappling.

OK then... I figured Roo would be OK to use, I just don't recommend him and Zan because they suck. =P Now, the extra star dash moves...what I meant is, getting them the "normal" way definitely should be allowed. But, if you have a 6-button controller config, you can perform all of them from the start of the game, with no special requirements needed. THAT, to me, should definitely be illegal if it's not mentioned in the manual. And yep, you hit the nail right on the head with characters. One point in Blaze's favor is that she has by far the best offensive special of the five allowed characters. Quite damaging, would be useful especially with the meter system in this game. She'd be my choice probably... -Josh

OK, I'm sorry I was unclear about the extra dash moves. The 6-button combinations are mentioned in the japanese manual, and therefore it should be ok to do the 3-star move from the start. See here: http://www.classicgaming.com/soronline/img/sor3/sor3_bk3_manualmoves_axel.jpg

Glad to see someone else out there has interest in doing a run of Streets of Rage 3. I'm currently doing a practice run with Zan on Hard (I'll be using him for the actual run as well...Axel would probably beat the game faster, but I like Zan better). After that, I'll be doing the real deal and posting it here. It will be done without taking any damage, so I can't just spam directed specials. Also, I'm unsure which route (at Stage 6) I'll want to take. I certainly like the City Hall route better, as it has more enemies and a better boss (Shiva). However, if people want to see the "good" ending, that's cool too. So, which route would you guys like to see?

Hey there atro city. Remember me? SoR3 is difficult to speedrun, because no character has a particulary high damage output. Some characters can scroll the screen faster (unlike SoR2) but that probably doesn't matter much because a lot more time is spent fighting than advancing. I'm not sure that Axel would be faster than Zan, but feel free to prove me wrong. Shiva ending has more enemies and better music, and a better boss, but it's not the _real_ ending. Plus it requires you to stand around and wait until the general/cheif dies, which will look stupid. I would go for the good ending.

Yep, I remember you all too well, Truncated. Actually, the scrolling screen is still a constant speed. It's just that Axel can't keep up with that kind of speed, Zan dashes exactly at that speed, and Skate barely beats it. To tell you the truth, I'm not really sure who would beat the game faster. Axel has a more powerful combo and dash attack (as well as good damage with the sword), but Zan is again faster, and he has a more powerful throw and a much faster directed special. That, and Zan can beat the bulldozer scene faster than any other character (even if it is only by a few seconds). Meh. I guess I'm not giving the "good" ending enough credit. It's a solid stage, but the Dr. Dahm and Robot Y bosses at the end really hurt it. Not to mention doing stationary jump kicks all the time is probably the fastest way to beat Robot Y, and that's no fun. Then again, in my run, I'll be balancing speed and entertainment equally because: 1. There isn't even a run of Streets of Rage 3 in circulation yet. 2. A pure speed run is just boring. It should be fun to watch as well, as I think that's the purpose of most of these videos. My progress so far is almost at the end of the first scene of Stage 4. I might post the practice run when I'm done with it, as it's contained a few miraculous things (like killing a green biker instantly by throwing a Signal at him).

Argh! Looks like I had to learn the hard way...always make backup savestates. My movie desynched at the end of Stage 4 Scene 1. Oh well...I might as well post what I have. http://venus.walagata.com/w/atrocity3010/SOR3.gmv Yes, I know Stages 1 and 2 are really, REALLY crappy. That was just me fooling around with slow motion and recording. That, and it's kind of hard to dash in slow motion. It gets much better in Stages 3 and 4, though. Comments before I start the actual run?

Why is it hard to dash in slow motion? I know that some games requires you to tap the controller twice in a direction to start running. But if you use frame advance, you can start running within 3 frames of time. Press and hold the direction and press frame advance, then release everything and press frame advance, once again press and hold direction and hit frame advance again. This was just an example of how it can look in other games. I don't know how Streets of rage 3 works so. Just saying that frame advance is your friend. ;)

Gens version 9c can do frame advance - go to options->joypad->set frame advance key. Then just hit that key while paused to advance.

>Yep, I remember you all too well, Truncated. Haha. You sound so happy to run into me again. Frame advance: http://tasvideos.org/UsingEmulatorTools.html Check the FAQs first. About the video: - Zan's combo is crap, so it makes no sense to use it on the agent enemies. Throw them. - You don't use down-attacks for an extra hit even though it would probably save time in some places. - The flurry can be done faster. - Some of the frames for Zan's tackle doesn't give enough damage to kill the bikers. Redo it until you get one which is enough. - You can stand close to Shiva to make him get up faster. - You could use the X button to use the bigger blitz attacks. Zan's are pretty lousy though. - Getting thrown by the signals loses time, unless possibly when hitting other enemies. But just fighting likely has a higher damage output. - In my opinion, health is for using if it saves time. I know that some people disagree. - The Mona-Lisa can be grabbed and thrown a lot more. They are weak when they get up from being knocked down. - The walls take damage at a constant rate, so I think the only way to beat them faster is with a character who runs faster. - You can time the car in level 3 to hit the three garcias jumping down. Also you can hit them while they are sitting there (buggy) On a positive note: - I liked how you threw everyone in the holes. I always do that when I play this game. It adds a lot to the style. - Getting the three knife-gacias run-over was good.

Thanks for the frame advance thing. I'll definitely find it useful. Zan's combo is crap, so it makes no sense to use it on the agent enemies. Throw them. Yeah, throwing is much faster, but that early on, I wasn't serious about time attacking. However, in my actual run (which I have done through Stage 1), I take them out much faster. You don't use down-attacks for an extra hit even though it would probably save time in some places. Yeah, I didn't really realize this until I was done, but you'd be surprised how much health Zan can take off in one go. The flurry can be done faster. Probably so, but then again, I'm playing this whole thing at 33%, and sometimes it just decides to be slow for some reason. Some of the frames for Zan's tackle doesn't give enough damage to kill the bikers. Redo it until you get one which is enough. Again, I didn't realize this, but killing the bikers actually slows you down a few seconds, because the game waits for the biker to disappear before throwing another one on the screen. Hitting them all once (and not killing them) before they dash off makes them go immediately, saving you time (this is what I'm doing in my actual run, with the exception of the one last biker when the boat comes up...then it doesn't matter if he dies or not). You can stand close to Shiva to make him get up faster. You mean the jump kick thing? I just assumed he would either hit me or jump too far near the edge of the screen. Either way, it's not that huge of a time loss. You could use the X button to use the bigger blitz attacks. Zan's are pretty lousy though. Yeah, but that's sort of a pain, and there's really no time it would result in significant time loss anyway. Getting thrown by the signals loses time, unless possibly when hitting other enemies. But just fighting likely has a higher damage output. Again, just too lazy to redo it at that stage. In my opinion, health is for using if it saves time. I know that some people disagree. Yeah, but of course it's really the author's choice in the end. I just think that using your specials strategically and not just spamming them all over the place is more entertaining in my opinion. The Mona-Lisa can be grabbed and thrown a lot more. They are weak when they get up from being knocked down. I couldn't get them to cooperate for some reason. They kept tossing me over and over. I'll try again on my actual run. That reminds me, I'll also try to kill both girls at the same time, as that doesn't result in a slow motion death. The walls take damage at a constant rate, so I think the only way to beat them faster is with a character who runs faster. Yeah, but Zan's triple charge at the end of a wall's life kills one wall and quickly advances him to the next. That, and his stationary special lasts long enough to damage the wall and back the bulldozer off at the same time (which I will be doing instead of directed specials in my actual run). You can time the car in level 3 to hit the three garcias jumping down. Also you can hit them while they are sitting there (buggy) Huh, guess I just didn't notice that. I'll look for it in my next run. As usual, your input is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Oh, and while I'm at it, I might as well post my VASTLY improved run of Stage 1 for all to view (although I probably would have saved some time with that Shiva thing you told me). For some reason, the menu selection just didn't want to work with me. http://venus.walagata.com/w/atrocity3010/SOR3.gmv Yeah, it's the same URL, but the file is different, trust me.

I swear, there are divine forces keeping me from getting this done. So I go to load a state (I was in Scene 2, Stage 3), then I decided not to and clicked cancel. Then, out of the blue, it loads a state way back in Stage 1 Scene 2! ARGH! That means I have to redo half of what I had done so far...oh well, at least I can do the Shiva thing now. This is already getting really frustrating. Edit: Ok, I'm through Stage 2 now. I'll be updating the file every level to at least prevent losing my whole movie to a stupid fault. http://venus.walagata.com/w/atrocity3010/sor3.gmv Overall, I'm very satisfied with the way things in the movie are working out so far.

Took me a quite a while to get this movie to work, because first it desynced at the fat guys on level 1. But i accidentally found out that you need to set the controller to 6-button mode for it to work properly (had it on 3-buttons). Anyway, looks very promising so far. Zan never was my favourite character in this game, but apparently that old wheezer can kick some ass :) Mona&Lisa battle was great, because i have never saw them get thrown around like that (or at all for that matter). Im not sure if there is any room for improvement, although at some places it looked like you could've punched a few foes a couple of times before grabbing them, atleast that's what i usually do when i play this game. Looking forward for the future updates.

A lot better than before. - The menu manipulation is slow. Use frame advance and you can test which frame is the earliest to move/press start. - Shiva battle is a lot better, but it would be faster if you could take the last health with something else than a throw because it means a lot of extra slowmotion airtime. - I'm not sure if what you said about the bikers is correct. If you hit them after the start-up phase they tend to stop in their tracks halfway. I think they only go faster if hit before they start moving. - The Roo-clown battle is a LOT better, but I wonder if not down-punch + flurry every time would speed it up even more. - When there are more than one enemy and one of them have more life than the other, you should attack that enemy first. The second signal group in the disco comes to mind. Oh, and don't lose work. Make backups. Lots and lots. Everytime after playback before loading a savestate.

The menu manipulation is slow. Use frame advance and you can test which frame is the earliest to move/press start. Tried that on the end score screen for Stage 2, and it didn't work as well as I thought it would. Shiva battle is a lot better, but it would be faster if you could take the last health with something else than a throw because it means a lot of extra slowmotion airtime. Again, just me not thinking. I was just relieved to finish the bastard off after countless rerecords. I'm not sure if what you said about the bikers is correct. If you hit them after the start-up phase they tend to stop in their tracks halfway. I think they only go faster if hit before they start moving. Certainly the question of whether or not it saves time can be debated, but one thing's for sure...you lose a significant amount of time if you kill them. The Roo-clown battle is a LOT better, but I wonder if not down-punch + flurry every time would speed it up even more. I personally don't know which is faster, so you could very well be right. When there are more than one enemy and one of them have more life than the other, you should attack that enemy first. The second signal group in the disco comes to mind. I threw the Signals so more fodder backup would arrive (ironically, more weak Signals). It doesn't matter in the end though, as I end up killing the strong Signal and the two final Galsias that come with him in one blow. Heh, you can damn well bet I'm not going to lose my entire video to desychs or overwriting again. By the way, I'm finished up through Stage 3. Same URL as always. http://venus.walagata.com/w/atrocity3010/SOR3.gmv

Hmm...is using "super" Axel allowed in the rules? It IS a button press code after all, and it would make for a pretty quick run, although it probably wouldn't be too entertaining to watch. In case any of you don't know what I'm talking about, there's a code that makes his standing special attack hit a ridiculous amount of times for equally ridiculous amounts of damage and knock down all standing enemies on the screen. There's also a "super" Skate too, but using him involves continuing.

I decided to stray away from hidden characters for the fact that they are cheap and boring to watch.

Super Axel is a secret cheat code and as such not likely to be allowed. Super Skate only involves dying once. Still, using him would be pretty boring. Roo can be selected by losing a continue, but he's not stronger than the regular characters so there's no point in it. There is also a super Zan but he can only be reached with game genie, at least what's currently known.
