I'm not sure if this belongs in this topic, i think it does... anyways, In level 4-2, I can complete the level with an end time of 358, using the vine to get to the warp zone. When I am going up to the vine, I have to make a decision of which I want to do. Jump higher on the vine, or get 1 game unit better when I land on the vine. my question is, which is faster, jumping on the middle of the vine and getting 1 game unit faster than usual or jumping higher on the vine and getting 1 game unit slower than usual? Right now, I am really working hard to get a 5:08 in smb1 and I figured the best people to ask this question would be you guys. If i get 1 game unit faster, I'm confused whether or not the 21 frame rule makes it so it is faster or not. I think when I know which is faster, hopefuly the 5:08 will be easier to obtain. 311 on 8-4 is just extremely difficult and I dont think i'd be able to pull it off.

I don't know, but you can probably test for yourself in the emulator. Turn on the frame counter and compare which gives you control faster. My guess would be, that grabbing as soon as the vertical jump speed is less than the climbing speed, is the best. That would work under the assumption that the 21-frame rule kicks in when the screen fades out and not when you grab the wine. But this is only a guess.

I will probably end up testing it on console. I think getting 1 game unit better is the best way to go.

>I will probably end up testing it on console. I thought the reason you were asking here was that measurements on a emulator were more precise than on a console. I think spotting a 21-frame difference in a longer period of black screen is more or less impossible. Unless the record-keeping institution adds up all your game units instead of your total real time, game units are irrelevant.

well I think I might just compare my videos for that level side by side to see which is faster. I had thought that maybe someone would have known about this already. I think In my reocrd attempts I will try both ways, one is faster, so if i make two successful attempts of getting through the game most likely I will get a 5:08. I hope. anyways, thanks for the help.
