Another World / Out Of This World - Completed Done, over with. I wash my hands of this game!! Here is the GMV: http://www.chis.nildram.co.uk/misc/outofthisworld_u_!_chis_gmv.zip This is a complete run of Another World (known in the USA as Out Of This World), and requires the Out of This World (U) [!] rom. If my maths is correct (not usually :P), this run lasts 17 minutes and 42 seconds... I'll edit this if not. Again, not a flawless run, but mostly good. Fun to watch, due to the style of the game.

(old message) Right it seems I'm having some resynch problems... I've done this final battle a dozen (too damn many) times now, and THIS time I know I did it successfully yet the damn GMV desynchs half-way through it! So I'm stopping for now. Speedrunning/timeattacking is frustrating enough without the game being extra-frustrating as well!!!

Thanks Foda, but they won't be necessary. :) I just need to get off my arse and to try rerecord that last section AGAIN. I know what to do, I've completed it enough times now... just that last battle with the guards (before the bit where Lester falls and gets caught by another guard), is EVIL. I'll get there, eventually...

Uhhh, it desyncs for me like right at the beginning of the movie. On the second screen with enemies, he runs into one and dies.

ooo.... man... :P you could have been faster... here: 1 - on the first screen swim to the right+up. 2 - you don't have to kill those slimes at all, just jump over them 3 - always jump when running 4 - after u killed the guard, you waited his skeleton to disappear to shoot the wall. you should shoot his skeleton instead. 5 - when the alien opens the hatch for you, you can be stepping on it already. 6 - you moved the wrong way for 1 second at the gasy tubes area. 7 - after you destroy the 3 doors you don't have to go back to recharge your weapon.... 8 - on the falling rocks screen, you did the first screen good, but on the second one there's 3 rocks falling. you can run between the first one and the second, you don't have to wait all of them to fall. 9 - you definitely don't have to stop running to jump those 2 pits with teeth. 10 - hmmm you just shot the tentacles... i never thought of that. i would always destroy them for good with super blast. hehe =) it seems ur way is faster (even though u'll have to stop and shoot them again later). 11 - again, you don't have to stop running to jump the abyss 12 - why did u let him slide down the ceiling spike? 13 - cool, you shot the lamp and killed the guard evenbefore he stopped walking. i didn't know you could do that. 14 - again, you don't have to charge your weapon... 15 - cool, you ignored one of the guards on the screen that u fight 2. i killed both :P 16 - somehow you had air to go back up on the water part without having to surface on the small cavern. i always take air on the way down and on the way up... cool 17 - on the last fight with those many many guards with guns , you seem to make some unecessary shields. off-discussion: it's funny how the story in the game ends, he doesn't go back home, now he's stuck on that world :P

Foda, you got it to work? Ah well, there you go then. The rest of you must be using the wrong rom. :P Really, I know WHY it would "desync," on the second screen with slugs Lester gets _that_ close to getting stung by one, but he DOESN'T - he kicks it and moves on. Foda, lots of good points there... firstly the slugs at the start. If Lester doesn't kill them before tackling the black beast, when running back he would get stung by them if they were still there. Jumping whilst running yes I should have done that more, however there are many scenes where Lester runs away with lasers firing at him from behind. If you jump during this, the lasers almost certainly hit him. Number 8 - I tried running straight through, kept dying under the first load of rocks. Number 10 - I did try killing one or two off with mega-shots, but it takes so much longer to charge, I'm not sure it would be faster. Number 17 - looking back at it, by the time I get mega-laser shots off and then small shots to kill the guards, they're close to destroying the shields I've made. Precaution. (well, another part is I'm close to loathing this game after all this! and a scene like that it's particularly frustrating to have to go back and try and refine it further...) The ending has closure (Lester and friend escape), but it tells us nothing else. Highly disappointing.

on the snes version i managed to jump over the slimes just by jumping them while going, while coming back, and while going again, it was no problem (notice that on zsnes i had to do the whole first level at once, cause of no re-recording..) yea, on some places you really have to run without jumping.

Far as I know, there are only two versions of the Genesis rom. U! and U h1. In U!, you die via black blob thing two screens over. In h1, it just pauses and stays that way near the beginning. Even after switching to 3 Button mode for the joypad to see if that made a difference, it STILL killed you. Given that it's happened to so many people, I'd say the problem is with the movie itself and not with what rom we have. >>;

Foda is able to play it back from start to finish. I am able to play it back from start to finish. Considering my Thunderforce 3 run, you surely don't think I'd send out a GMV without checking the movie plays through correctly FROM START TO FINISH, MYSELF? It works, Lester does not die. Find another rom, or re-record it yourself. As I said, I have finished with this game and no longer wish to touch it (I'm finishing off another Thunderforce run anyway...)

So could one of you who got it to work please make a savestate after he kicks the first slug on the second screen? I would like to see the rest of it. Edit: Whoops, my bad. The wip for Gens v.9 calls all movies made with v.8 as being made with v.6. I think.

It's working for me. Both with version test8 and the latest test9 wip. Md5sum of the rom: 74ca1efe444d9c0739fffb68334fff46 Out of this World (U) [!].bin Settings: 3 buttons for P1 and 6 buttons for P2

nifboy, i don't think jyzero released version 9wip to public yet, we are still testing it. correct me if i'm wrong, but they can't have that gens version yet... - i played the movie on gens_movie_test5.exe and on gens_movie_test8.exe and it works fine. he doesn't die to any slug. - my rom is "Out of this World (U) [!].bin" and has "1,00 MB (1.048.576 bytes)" of file size. - i have both controllers set to 6 buttons. - my sound is set to stereo, 44100, YM2612 high quality - graphics is 2xSAI (kreed), with sprite limit enabled. no vsynch. - country is auto detect (usa, japan, europe order)

Does anyone have a copy of this run? I may have found a minor shortcut.

Here's some more optimizations if anyone wants to do this run:
  • 3:16:33 - Run straight onto the elevator and do your business at the bottom of the shaft without your friend. Go back and pick him up when you are done, that way you don't have to wait for him to sloooowly walk to the elevator twice.
  • 9:14:40 - This is just before the room transition where you fight two guards before the room with the pool. If you hold B and C here, you will run-jump through the entire next room, and make it into the pool room. Even cooler, you will take one jump into the pool room, trigger the "falling into water" animation, but simultaneously be shot by a guard and killed, even though it looks like you never get hit. You can immediately press any button and continue, and you will start in the pool room, having bypassed completely the lengthy fight scene. Something similar might work elsewhere.

This exact same thing happened to me in the SNES version. But it turned out to be even faster to run-jump through with slightly different timing so that you bypass the fight without getting shot in the next room.
